1Up as we know it is dead.

Or, more to the point, 1Up Yours is likely dead.

I don't follow many gaming sites because, frankly, most of them are annoying as all hell but I did really enjoy the 1up Yours podcast. Now that three quarters of the Ziff Davis-employed team on the show has been axed I don't see how the show could, or would, go on. Management can tip-toe around things and make as many non-committal comments as they want but I don't see how the operations can go on without severe changes.

What happened to the 1up peoples? I haven't visited the site in a long time (which probably answers my question), what did I miss?

ETA: should read article before posting.

I have every issue of EGM since it began when I was in 8th grade. This is a bummer. Will I be getting a partial refund on my subscription?
Just writing about this. Damn shame. Video game community's in an uproar.

Alex- they'll most likely just transfer your subscription to a similar mag. Which might be hard for them now.
One of the few video game websites I could stand. This really sucks. I hope the guys who worked here pop up in some other form.
I have a friend who worships at the altar of these guys. He just called to see if I'd heard this. He's pretty disappointed.

I wasn't familiar with 1UP but I used to read EGM in middle school. Too bad to see it go.
I may have close to every issue of EGM published stashed around in various boxes. EGM was always my favorite gaming magazine, especially since the late 90's when Sony starting publishing their own magazine a la Nintendo Power. It always felt like the no bullshit magazine to go to, and the Sore Thumbs Blog (you should all be reading it!) continues that ethos.

I actually never visited 1UP.com as much as I wanted to, and actually made a point to add it to my website rotation just Monday. I hope it doesn't change too much. Pretty depressing day for gamers that grew up with EGM.

Giant Bomb, it's up to you now. God bless ya.

Crispy Gamer isn't bad, but the layout is horrible.

I remember when I had an EGM subscription, back when I was huge into gaming. Sushi X! Elephant Sak! Crispin Boyer!

Even though I haven't read an issue since the original X-Box was new, I'm saddened by this news.
Game blogs like Destructoid make magazines and professional game websites seem outmoded. This will probably not be the first magazine to die.
Jesus Alex, the copy I have in my hands will be the last one? That's really cold. The only thing that made me smile about the news was the hope for an EGM reunion issue sending the magazine off.
Yeah, and what a way to go out, right? Friggin' Wolverine.

engelbert, where have you been? All the good magazines died out long ago.
Guess it's time to invest in a new laptop so I have reading material in the john.
EGM was sort of my first CHUD, in a way. It was a group of intelligent nerds who loved the same thing I did. When shit was great, they championed it. When shit was shit, they usually let it have it (except that perfect score they gave Halo, which always bugged me). I really connected to Crispin Boyer, Shoe, Shawn Smith, Greg Sewart, and all them. They introduced me to the glory that was Seanbaby.

Remember when that kid from the make a wish foundation came to visit their offices, and they let him be a guest reviewer? That was sweet.

I feel like a little part of my childhood just died. I've been reading EGM since I was in 4th grade. Not so much anymore, but if I ever feel like picking up a magazine to kill some time its always it.

That issue you're talking about Patrick (the one where they gave Halo a perfect score) is one of my favorites ever. I believe that was where they came out with their list of the 100 greatest games, and Super Metroid was number one. It also had reviews of GTA3 and MGS2. I have no idea how I have such a detailed memory of that issue but I do (I had to be in 7th fucking grade).
Sad times indeed. I read EGM from middle school until my first year of college, and as others have mentioned, I really connected with the crew and loved their often inspired nerd wit.

Sushi X 4 life.

I was crushed when I found out that Quartermann wasn't a real guy. It was like finding out Santa isn't real.
Wow - Quartermann wasn't real?

Damn, I always assumed he was like some guy with super insider connections who could get the dirt on games.

I'm looking right now at an old EGM with Soul Caliber 2 on the cover. I will miss this magazine.
Goddamn. Gamepro still exists and EGM is dead. Is PC Fucking Gamer next, just to finish off my adolescent gaming mags?

I still have an old friend's copy of the 100th issue. I'll bet somewhere, deep inside, he hates the guy that took that issue.

Honestly, though, I'm more pissed/disappointing that the podcasts are gone. Look, I know they weren't the greatest thing ever, but to have 1upFM, Retronauts and 1upYours queued up and ready for a good jog on the weekend was nice. And I've had a hard time finding another vg podcast that's at least not shitty.
Aw that sucks. Personaly I gave up on Ziff and 1up since CGW/GFW got the axe but I still listened to some of their podcasts. But EGM closing is heavy. So basically I'm down to EDGE and PC Gamer for gaming magazines.
Holy shit, the list of firings is insane. James Mielke, the damn EIC, got canned! When Chu was running EGM he was also boss of 1UP, so I would assume that was the deal with Mielke. It also appears the entire gamevideos.com team was let go, which really sucks, because that is my favorite source of gaming videos. Much better than Gametrailers.com.
My heart became cold to the plight of gaming mags when Gamefan and Game Players died.

That said, 1Up had really come into its own last few years, and to see them go like this is kind of a disgrace.

Also, Dan Hsu is awesome. Will never forget this.
I used to have the entire first year of EGM stashed somewhere (I can still see the Shinobi cover in my mind's eye like it was yesterday), and bought it fairly regularly up through the mid 1990s. All those issues went to Half Price Books and/or were simply recycled years ago. I stopped reading game mags when Next Generation died. But this is still a sad day.
It's not surprising that the video game magazine is all but dead. That said, it's rare that I push a turd through the Nordcanal without a Game Informer next to me in the 'throom. My wife always smirks when they come in the mail: "Alan, here's your game magazine." (Say it out loud.)
I've been off and on gaming magazines since Game Players/Ultra Game Players died got the last issue of Next Gen and had no idea it was the last. EGM was always that last hope I mean GI is alright but there's a reason its so cheap. Disappointing that the old print gaming mags are going the wayside.
I hadn't paid for an EGM in a couple of years. I guess the gravy train had to end someday.

Once Digital Life got the ax (which was pretty sucky, but the mini events throughout the year were pretty good), this was all but certain.

I was cleaning out some old video game stuff from my parents' this weekend and came across my stash of video game mags (and my still work Super Nintendo). I can't believe I saved issues 1 - 100 of Nintendo Power.
I've had a running subscription to EGM since 99, and aside from Netflix, this was the only thing that the mail system was good for any more. I won't say I'm "sad" to see them go, but it is a shame that they didn't give them an issue to say goodbye. Hopefully the fan outrage will rectify that.
Wow, an end of era. I never did subscribe to EGM. At one point my parents let me subscribe to Nintendo Power, Gamepro and Gameplayers. It amazes me that Nintendo Power still exists but it reads kind of like Maxim now.
Sad news indeed. If you look at Mielke's blog at 1up.com it says that had completed one more issue of EGM and that somehow we will all get to see it, but I'm guessing it will be more of a regular issue than a print version of the final episode of 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show', which is what I'd like to see.

With the internet blocked at work, EGM was my go to time killer. Guess I'll have to find a new one. And I continue to hold on to as many back issues as my wife will allow.
Aw dang... This blows. Times are a changing and change is inevitable but it sucks that they got gobbled up and spit out like that. No time for a proper end where one was due. I'm another guy who's been reading their stuff for a long, long time. Reality is harsh sometimes... really goes to show that it's all just another business.
i don't like this. i was just getting into 1up yours, and now this. hopefully giant bomb does indeed step it up... and invite john davison on. his revulsion when speaking of wii music a few weeks back won my fanboyism big time.
I've never read any of their magazines, except for the old issues of Computer Gaming World, which they released online and I've only read a few articles on the site, but I really liked their podcasts. GFW Radio aka. The Brodeo, was my favourite podcast when it was on and Shawn Elliot is the smartest and funniest gaming journalist I've heard in any podcast. 1UP Yours is good too, even though I hate Shane Bettenhausen. It's a shame to see them all get fired.
EGM? I read it through junior high school, but oh well. My childhood was already buried with [ULTRA] GamePlayers' cancellation. THAT was a good fucking magazine.
EGM was my first gaming mag and I'm very disappointed to see the mag end after 20 years in publication. EGM made me wanted to go to bookstores in my youth so I can read them as much as I could before I got yanked away by the adults. I guess this is the fate that will befall many mags in the future, with people turning into Internet for their info more and more.
They're going to post the last issue of EGM on 1up.com
http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=...UserId=4549175

The Street Fighter cover is a much more dignified way to go than that Wolverine one.

Ah, a fighting game. The magazine goes out how like it was the 90s heydays of fighting game after fighting game on the cover.
EGM has been absolute garbage the last couple years. When an issue of Game Informer has more substance, you know you're in trouble. They were pretty solid up til the early 00s, though.

Back when I was big into gaming mags in the mid-late 90s, I always embraced the ones with more personality, like Game Players/UltraGP, Gamefan, and PC Gamer. Still, this does signal the end of an era. What good cross platform mags are left, Edge in the UK?

Edit: Next Generation was great, too.

What the web world will lack is good graphics and page layout, and a sense of journalistic standards. Those elements are more important than you might think. Now we'll just have hastily written gaming blogs, giving you the news RIGHT NOW! with no insight or editorial or graphic elements.

Honestly, I'd think this was more sad if the gaming world was more exciting. The only game I can think of I want to buy in 2009 is Dragon Age on PC.
