A member of the Red Sox?

Et Tu Brute?

So, that's what a brain aneurism feels like.

And this offseason was going so splendidly.

I just made Homer's "d'oh!" sound, but I said "Smoltz!" instead.

Because I am not happy about this, you see.

Reports have the Braves offering him $2m guaranteed, with fairly stringent incentives that would get him to $7m. If that's true -- if that's all we offered him -- then I'm going to go torch Wren's office.

As a Houston Astros fan, I always hated Smoltz. There was a group of Houston fans that referred to the trio of Maddux, Smoltz and Glavine as the Sniveling Women, and I loved to hate them. Smoltz leaving saddens me, though, as him being in Boston means I'll never have reason to even watch him anymore.

Didn't Atlanta used to annually have one of the higher payrolls in MLB? When did they get cheap?

Well, I got one good thing out of all this. Was reading one of the Braves blogs over at AJC and somebody's user name is Bring Me the Head of Deforest Kelley, which is the best thing I've ever heard.

Pour a little out for the Young Guns...

End of an era.

Losing the overwhelming majority of their nationally televised games probably hurt them, a lot (MLB forced “America’s Team” off of TBS in 2008), let alone a change in ownership, their recent dalliance with mediocrity, and a—I’ll be generous here—tepid fan-base that does them no favors at the gate.

The Braves have their work cut out for them, as this off-season has basically exposed how much weaker their position is financially. There’s already talk of the Braves trading Chipper mid-season, something I’d have never thought possible even three months ago. A regional sports network here, a new stadium there, and maybe, just maybe, the Braves may get themselves back into the swing of things...

God is it weird to be in a position to potentially pity the Braves... Of course I couldn’t actually pity the Braves, as that would be physically impossible, but even being in a position to is just strange.

Yet another example of flaccid ownership. The current Braves owners may say otherwise but they're looking to run the team for as little money as possible and this is yet another example of that.

A new stadium? Maybe I missed something, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. Turner Field was opened in 1997 (not counting its Olympic use in 1996). It's a really nice ballpark that, if I'm not mistaken, they just sunk some major money into two seasons ago with that gigantic HD jumbotron.
