Let's Play A Game.....

Okay, I was sitting here listening to music, and came up with an entirely not so original game to play, having to do with music. Pick 3 groups, any 3 groups...ones you love, or hate, or somewhere in between. The next person has to give their opinion of said groups, no matter what it may be. If you dont have one, make something up. Doesnt matter. Lets see how this goes.

1. STS9
2. Widespread Panic
3. Umphrey's McGee

Let the hate begin!

1. Not a fan of Swedish techno, though "BLORG" is a worthy album.
2. I liked them better when they were called THE TALKING HEADS.
3. He's a good harpist, but who listens to harp music?

1. The Police
2. Leonard Cohen
3. Cyndi Lauper

I'll play:

1. STS9: The play around here a good bit, though I've never seen them. The name's fun to say, though.
2. Widespread Panic: The only jam band I've really enjoyed. I've got a couple of their studio albums that I like a lot, and I went to the free show they played in Athens 10 years ago or so, the Panic in the Streets show. Good times. Dylan, if you haven't heard them, the two Brute albums they recorded with Vic Chesnutt are worth tracking down.
3. Umphrey's McGee: I know people who like them, but they're not on my radar. The name bugs me.

Mine:

1. Idlewild
2. Cheap Trick
3. The Bottle Rockets

All right, everyone, just pick who you like better, me or Ripoll. We'll be waiting.
1. The Police - the white reggae stuff hasn't aged well
2. Leonard Cohen - eminently coverable
3. Cyndi Lauper - led the Pop music/Pro-wrestling fusion movement that continues today

Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Cosby You! Black Entertainer
David Bowie

Edit: I like misfit better (Ripoll! not really, man), but saw his list too late.

I saw Cosby do stand-up once. Fucking great. Plus, he did the Fat Albert laugh as part of a story about trying to prove who he was while on the phone.

I worked for him for a year. He's a dirty old man.

But Cosby You! Black Entertainer is a real band. Sort of. Dig their NES cover of Apache.

Same here. You know, you and me, we're not so different. Maybe we can learn to co-exist.

1- As much as I like post-rock, this band is zzzzzzzz... (especially that they started playing at midnight when I saw them live)
2- Who the fuck?
3- One of the legend, who still makes relevant music today.

And now:

1- Sigur Ros
2- Dead Can Dance
3- Brokencyde

1- Isolated songs were made for scoring movies and trailers, but albums all tend to outstay their welcome.

2- Fuck Host of Seraphims, but huzzah to most of the rest of their catalogue.

3- RAWWWRRR

Final Fantasy
The Presets
Elbow

I'm a HUGE Panic fan...seen em...on numerous occasions live, including one of two Thanksgiving 2008 shows in Asheville, NC. I've also got the official sbd recordings of every show from spring 2007 tour til new years this year. I'm missing some of the summer 2008 shows though. I find myself very jealous of you right now for having attended that show in the streets of Athens. I've got the CD of that show, came as a bonus with one I bought....the title of which is currently slipping my mind. Wasnt there something like 100k people at that show or something? I have heard the albums with Vic Chesnutt, and they are good indeed. Now, about STS9...I'm going to be able to see them for the first time in March...they're playing 2 shows at The Orange Peel here in Asheville, and I'll be attending both shows. I've purchased the sbds of a lot of their shows over the last two years, even though I've not been able to attend a show until now. I'm looking forward to seeing em in person. I havent had the chance to see UM, they too are coming to the Orange Peel...in february if I remember...but I made the decision to skip that show this time so I could go to both nights of STS9.

1. Guys that look like girls that have gone through a sex change, and failed.
2. I think my iTunes has some of these on it.
3. They make good farting noises.

1. Idlewild: One of my favorite bands post-college, awesome workout music. Actual substance lay within those riffs. They're from Scotland, they're not Belle or Sebastian, so they rock.
2. Cheap Trick: Cannot stand "Hello, There" on Rock Band 2, have very soft spot in my heart for "The Flame"
3. Bottle Rockets: Always confusing them with the Ass Ponys and they've now recessed in my memory to just another alt-country band from the early '90s.

Afghan Whigs
Stars
Teagan & Sara

1. I tried getting into them when Gentleman came out (I was in high school). Didn't really work for me. As I got older though, I started digging them quite a bit...although I can't really call myself a true "fan." I like them more out of respect. I don't turn to their albums that often but I do consider them a good band. Does that make sense?

2. I can't really figure out why Stars don't work for me. I like a few of their songs, but their albums just don't click in. I probably haven't given them a fair enough chance. There's some good songwriting and some inspired choices, but at the end of the day they leave me a little cold. I should probably try a little harder, though.

3. I dig 'em. Good album last year. Nothing mind blowing, but pleasant and enjoyable. Have a lot of room to grow.

Here's mine.

1. Shudder to Think
2. Superchunk
3. No Age

Superchunk - Saw them open for Fugazi, then again at Lollopalooza. They're a fun band, but I guess I feel like they sort of blend in with all the other bands that were doing similar stuff around that time.

Shudder to Think - Interestingly, they opened for Fugazi the night before, the show I didn't go to, but my roommate did. He HATED them, and I guess I never really looked into them based solely on bad rap from one guy. I should give them a try.

No Age - OK, I haven't seen them live, but I'm a little puzzled by the hype. They have a couple good songs, but I really don't get how people are going apeshit over them. Good graphics, though.

Give Shudder To Think's 'Pony X-Press Record' a spin. It takes a few listens to get into, but it's well worth the effort.

When Shudder to Think comes up, I have no choice but to contribute.

1. So-so on the older, interweaved shouty vocals'n'organ stuff, but love the pop-oriented new stuff.
2. #1 Record, Radio City, and Third are impossible to dispute; everyone should own or, at least, hear them. They're one of the few cult bands that would sound perfectly at home on oldies radio between the Byrds and Beatles. The reunion stuff is a lot more spotty - the live album with the Posies is pretty good, but the studio album from a few years ago is a trainwreck.
3. Haven't heard much of them. Oddly, it sounds like slightly more complicated pop punk a la Green Day or even Blink 182.

1. Torche
2. Todd Rundgren
3. Animal Collective

Oh, I just realized that I got so caught up in answering the questions that I didn't throw my own choices out there.

1. Phish
2. Bauhaus
3. The Fiery Furnaces
