Vigilante Justice

What are your thoughts? I thought it was a pretty simple issue - self-defense is OK, roving mobs are not. Mobs don't react to activities, they pursue them blindly. What sort of naive is comfortable that because they're following the law they won't be in the wrong place at the wrong time or with the wrong skin color? These are the same reasons to be critical of the police. I've never been in trouble with the law, but I certainly don't feel relaxed and happy for cops to be around all the time. They look with suspicion upon everybody. It's just that some racists think the law enforcement is a A-OK with them; and they can be, yes. It's an uncomplicated, barely intellectual issue.

But living the car theft and sometimes murder capital produces other disturbing views...

Need to send them some copies of Irreversible...

EDIT: Hm, I guess the underlining reason I posted this is that, beyond this little piece of writing from a small big city, it feel more and more like I'm living in a pseudo-American town. The re-opening abortion debate, the increasing number of religious nutcases I've been running into, the financial system actually moving further from socialism while America may inch a slighter step towards it...I dunno. And yes, I read most of the papers daily. Alarmism? Perhaps. Just a note of caution so far...

As long as vigilantes recognize that they're operating outside the law and are criminals, I'm actually fine with it. I have no problem with gangsters killing each other, it's only when they hurt innocent people that I get worked up about it; if a vigilante criminal wants to beat the crap out of another criminal, go ahead. Just don't expect to be treated like a hero or receive leniency from the courts if you get arrested.

As long as they don't have nipples on their suits, I'm ok with them.

This may sound silly(and doesn't relate too much to the first post), but I'm really surprised there haven't been any copycat comic book style vigilantes. With the stupidity of some people, combined with the tendency for people to imitate media and pop culture, it seems like it's just a matter of time. Unless there have been, and I haven't heard about it.

CNN covered Mexico City's Superbarrio, who wears red tights and a red and yellow wrestler's mask. Rather than fight crime and corruption with violence, he uses his unique image to organize labor rallies and protests, and file petitions.

The Age described Polarman of Iqaluit, Canada, whose primary interests are shoveling the snow off sidewalks during the day, and patrolling the streets for criminals at night.

Frank Castle is way up there on my "comic book characters I wish were real" list.

Shadow of vigilantes appears in Mexico drug war

Quote:
CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (Reuters) – Shadowy vigilante groups are threatening Mexico's drug gangs near the U.S. border in retaliation for a wave of murders and kidnappings that killed 1,600 people in this city alone last year.

One group in the border city of Ciudad Juarez pledged last week to "clean our city of these criminals" and said their mission was to "end the life of a criminal every 24 hours."
