My guess: the orchestra actually did the segue into it once, and the conductor resigned in frustration after the crowd went nuts for it.

J Mascis does a great acoustic cover of this, and the Drive By Truckers do a great full band version (that actually sounds closer to Mascis's than Skynyrd's).

I've heard the Truckers' version, but I'll have to track down the Mascis cover. Thanks!

It was one of those "songs that aren't bad, but I never want to hear again" (like "Stairway to Heaven", or "Back in Black") until I played it on Guitar Hero 2. Playing it really made me appreciate how good the guitar is throughout the entire song, main riff, solo, all of it.

It's use in The Devil's Rejects is more annoying than anything else, because Zombie was so committed to using the whole stupid song that the ending drags on forever. Good in theory (the song, thematically and tonally fits quite well), bad in practice.

Now, The Allman Brother's "Midnight Rider", on the other hand, got a huge bump into awesome territory from it's use in The Devil's Rejects.

You know that one guy that always manages to yell out 'FREEBIRD!' at ANY concert?

That's my dad. I apologise in advance on the behalf of the whole Petrusky family.

Freebird isn't a bad tune, it's just too big for its own good. Same as Stairway to Heaven. It's fucking annoying to see those songs be remembered as the hallmark of those bands, when they wrote much better stuff that will never get as much love (talking mostly about Zeppelin here, as far as personal taste goes).

I was born in Jacksonville and live there to this day. I believe that in Jacksonville it is legal to stab someone if the don't like Lynard Skynard.

A friend of mine wa sin Belgium for a while, and told me he was attending the concert of a local band. I asked him to yell "DO-FREE-BIRD" at some point, even though he didn't know the song or the myth around it.

True enough, he yelled it, and at the encore the singer was all (in dutch): "This is an old song, but some of you may know it... Freebird".

Just read it. I'm sort of in the middle of something, but the short review is "boomer wankishness filled with TONS of interesting tidbits." Good read, for the most part.
