I'm planning on taking a trip to NY around April for my birthday and checking this out, along with a few other shows.

NEW YORK -- You can tell he's loving it. In a relaxed, even pussycattish frame of mind, the legendarily exacting Arthur Laurents is taking "West Side Story" -- the landscape-changing musical he helped to birth in 1957 -- for another potentially revolutionary spin.

Eager to put a novel stamp on a show he feels has not always been astutely handled (he abhors, for instance, the "bogus" Oscar-winning 1961 movie version), Laurents is tinkering with his new Broadway-bound production in intriguing ways.

Morning Edition, December 15, 2008 ยท A week before her first performance, the young star of a new production of West Side Story was still slightly fuzzy on some famous lyrics.

To be fair, she hadn't been warned that NPR would be asking her to sing.

And more important, there's no reason she should know those words.

Because in this much-anticipated Broadway-bound revival, 21-year-old Josefina Scaglione sings Maria's "I Feel Pretty" this way:

Hoy me siento
tan hermosa
tan preciosa que puedo volar
y no hay diosa en el mundo que me va a alcanzar.

That's right: This revival, directed by West Side Story librettist Arthur Laurents himself, is a bilingual one.
