Reality TV

Yeah it's trashy and pretty much glorified game shows but some of them offer undeniable entertainment value. Off the top of my head.....

1. The Amazing Race: New convert to this show. Love the globetrotting and challenges the contestants have to undertake. Sure it's a glorified gameshow but I get a kick out of watching it.

2. Joe Millionaire: Talk about a 1 season concept if there ever was one. Still it was reality TV at its trashiest and one of its finest moments. The whole concept was to set up a Bachelor-like show with a handsome rich stud and populate the contestants with your average gold digging women. The twist of course was that the bachelor was a working class stiff pretending to be a millionaire and that he'd have to tell the winner the truth. Not a highwater mark in American culture but great entertainment. They did try it a second time, but it just didn't work at all.

3. Paradise Hotel: Fuck if I remember what the rules were. I just know it had the most magnificent cast of douchebags ever assembled for reality TV but when the nerdy Dave came on board, the show became classic. It then became this wierd "Revenge of the Nerds" kind of reality show and an instant classic.

4. Man vs. Beast: I think that was the title of the special. On that show we found out once and for all if a bear could eat more hotdogs than Kobiashi and if an elephant can beat 50 midgets in hauling a 747. This show is right up there with the moon landing in TV history.

Reality tv has done more to strengthen my loathing of humanity than the Nazis.

I've never watched any reality show regularly, I'm really proud of that.

Just call me when they get to a 'Running Man'-esque gameshow when the prisons start overflowing. That I will watch, and it's only a few years before someone tries it.

My wife was watching one called True Beauty the other night, so I sat down with her and started watching it and realized it was as close to an SNL skit of a reality show as we're likely to see. Every person on the show is loathsome, they're all overly concerned with their looks and wanting to be considered the most beautiful person in America. The "twist" is that their inner beauty counts as much as their looks and none of them know it.

Honestly, it's the most horrible thing I think I've ever seen.

bumping this thread because I just wanted to share the title of this new reality TV/home improvement show I discovered as I was checking the cable listings:

It's one of those where you don't need to actually watch the show, you just need to think of the name of the show and you'll be all smiles for the rest of the day.

The only reality show I watch is called Shark Tank. A panel of wealthy investors hear business pitches from people who are trying to raise capital. I find it fascinating.

I haven't seen it, but it has to be more interesting than The Vanilla Ice Project. At least Pinchot is working on older homes and using recycled and re-purposed materials.
