HBO's THE PACIFIC - Page 4

That has to have been the most trite, rote, undramatic finale of a mini-series I've seen in a good long while. It kind of underlines that while the series was excellent at blowing things up, they were terrible at character work.

snafu silently walking off the train without waking sledge up was the only moment that got to me.

agreed that several people at the end got a "who was that guy?" out of me

Yep to all. The Snafu walk was the best part. The rest? Who cares.
Lecki showed some spark, the show's biggest mistake was to take him out of the narrative so soon.

Lovely battle scenes, horrible character work. A big failure.

I don't know how to feel about this now that it's over. There were moments even some in this episode that worked and worked beautifully but on the whole it was a forgettable experience. Except for the battle scenes.

And I have to join the chorus about not having any idea who all these guys were at the end credits. Shame.

A terrific conclusion, to an...Epic Series. It didn't matter to me, that I only recognized half the characters in the final scene, as the show really captured the Pacific Theater Of Operations, so perfectly. The only thing, I would have liked to see, is for The Pacific to end with the wedding of Robert Leckie and Vera. I love the score to the miniseries as well. If...The Pacific, doesn't Sweep the best miniseries category at the emmys, it will be a disappointment.

Agreed on both counts. I did think Sledge's apathy and then breakdown in the field was very well done.

I think this miniseries is a prime candidate for that "Judging Directors By Their Past Work" thread. I thought it was mostly an impressive piece and would have sung its praises a lot more . . . if there was never a Band of Brothers. I enjoyed every episode, but it never quite congealed into a whole work like BoB did.

Finished this tonight. Thought everything with Leckie was fairly entertaining, thanks to some wonderful work by James Badge Dale, and the battle across the airfield was appropriate harrowing. The rest was standard at best and boring at worst. BAND OF BROTHERS is a miniseries I try to revisit every half decade. I can't imagine sitting through this again.

Apparently, this mini-series was historically accurate to a fault. Makes a strong case for writer's embellishment.

You might be right. As I was telling my wife tonight, it seemed like nearly every episode of BAND OF BROTHERS featured a unique and interesting mission. One in which the goals were clear and the action became very much a narrative. I'm thinking about the assault on the AA guns on D-Day, the patrol across the river to capture prisoners, taking the town of Foy after the Battle of the Buldge. Just awesome stuff.

THE PACIFIC had the crossing of the airfield ... and, uh, a bunch of scenes where Marines shot Japanese soldiers either charging out of the jungle or hiding in caves and bunkers. It might be historically accurate for that part of the war, but it sure isn't dramatically compelling.
