Bill Murray wasn't even nominated for Rushmore. Michael Caine won that year (and really didn't deserve it) and Haley Joel Osment got a nomination for Sixth Sense which looks horrible in hindsight. I won't fault nominations for Cruise for Magnolia or Jude Law for Talented Mr. Ripley. Michael Clark Duncan for The Green Mile...eh. I'm a huge Murray fan, I'll admit, and I felt strongly he should have won that year. Not even being nominated feels crazy.

Murray should've been in the lead category for RUSHMORE. Cruise most definitely should've beaten Caine.

What awards he did win were all for Supporting. That's where they had him placed.

I wouldn't argue if Cruise had won. Even Jude Law wouldn't have been a bad choice.
