George W Bush's Last Press Conference

Wow! It's like Nixon's last press conference, except George W ain't having a comback.

Nostalgia, anger, regret, bitterness, and at a couple of points I swear he was going to just lose it.

Key comments:

On the Republican Party: "People think Republicans don't like Immigrants."

On why he didn't do more for the Israeli/Palisinian conflict "it's been a long time since there was peace in the Middle East"

"History is never short term"

On Katrina: He argues that had he flown in his presence would have been a distraction for local law enforcement...then he goes intoa tirade about how the Press would have lambasted him if he HAD flown in. You can tell Katrina weighs on him

"I inherited a recessiona nd I'm ending on a recession. And in the middle we had 52 weeks of growth"

"GOTCHA!"

When he let fly with that bit about inheriting a recession and ending on one, I was a little confused. Was he referring to the dot com bust or what?

If so, I'm pretty sure that was never officially called as a recession...

B/c, other than that, the government's budget was operating with a surplus, wasn't it?

Forget it Jared, it's Crawford.

Don't remind me...that pit stop of a town is about a half hour away.

As I recall, however, the wave had crested and we were moving into a down cycle.

There was a recession (contraction of GDP for 2 quarters) in late 2000 & early 2001. Pretty minor by our current recession's standards, however.

I'd say that pretty much anything since 1938 is pretty minor by our current recession's standards.

There was a recession and as we were trying to pull out of it (remember the first ever $300 & $600 checks from the government? and how you had to list it on your tax return and pay the money back at the end of the year? There was something in the West Wing about it.) we had 9/11 which also killed many sectors of our economy for many months \ years. We didn't have full recovery I think until about Q4 2003 (going off memory). All of the interest rate cuts from that economic fiasco led to our current economic housing problem.

Touche.

Late 80s and early 90s was pretty darn close though.

It was interesting to see just how fixiated Bush still is on 911.

At one pointhe was answering a pretty innoculous question about Obama coming in after him. He began with some generalities then suddenlly starts spewing about the threat of Terrorism Obama will face.

At another point Bush suddenly goes ballistic and demands of the Press "don't you remember 911?! Don't you remember what it was like then?!"

It's sad when a president's high point is 9/11.
Yeah, it's really sad to see it.

I guess we will just have to wait until the inevitable deluge of jokes when Bush opens his "library".

God knows it will probably just be a Hooters with a gun range on the back.

Just yesterday, incoming Obama officials participated with their counterparts in the Bush administration in a table-top exercise to prepare for a possible terror attack during the Presidential transition.
...

The problem is, not enough people DO remember 9/11. Hey Look, a message from Osama Bin Ladin today.

And therein lies the problem for the Republican Party. No! Stop forgetting about 9/11! We need to live in a all 9/11 world all the time or else we won't have anything to scare you with!

Psychos.

Complete bullshit, and you know better than that.

How the fuck can you forget it when practically the entire GOP is bludgeoning the American public with it as often as they can?

Perhaps that's to keep us from thinking about the 2.6 million jobs lost last year.

Don't let the screen door hit ya there, Bushie.

I remember. I've been watching the relevant Frontline episodes while fishing for Old Ironjaw the past couple of nights. Phrases like 'unmitigated audacity' and 'shameless arrogance' come to mind. As does 'abject cowardice'. I'm not amazed at the Bush Administration's fearmongering, but that people believed it still blows the mind.

Hope his library has "My Pet Goat"

I listened to some of this on NPR the other morning. He sounds -- and looks -- like a broken man. Is it just me, or did he completely fall off the radar for most of 2008?

Anyway, my favorite part is when he said he "generally" means what he says. I might've misheard him, but if that's what he said, it's gold. I wonder if Mr. Bush could let us know when he didn't mean what he said...
