Surely this has been brought up in the past, I might have even started one myself, but I'm google searching my ass off and can't find any suriving old thread on the subject. Thrill me.
I've always had a big soft spot for these games since playing the original back in elementary school. Owned the first Nightmare vhs and the Atmosfear dvd game for a few years now, but went out today and picked up the "whole" vhs series (Nightmares I-IV) for a pittance after seeing a local ad on craigslist. The hardest part will be rounding up people to actually sit down and play this thing.. RIP the death of board games in most social circles
Love the 90's kitschyness of the tape series (Baron Samedi hip hop music video anyone?) that they didn't really recapture with the Atmosfear dvd - but I see that they actually released a Kufu the Mummy entry on dvd back in '06, wow! There's just something to be said for having live-action footage, something I've always loved about games like the original Resident Evil, Jedi Knight II, and others that the most lavish CGI cinematics can't replicate. That old-fashioned charm.
I never fully realized how successful these games apparently started off, always kind of wrote it off as a underground cult classic type deal but then I saw this promotional video on youtube. Nightmare dance parties, Pepsi cross-promotions, a Halloween bash.. they must have seen massive drop-offs in sales for the later sequels since IV ends with an image teaser for the next entry in the series (which they all did, sort of like Bond films I suppose) which never materialized and the franchise promptly died for a long time.
Anyone else keeping their beat-up old VHS player around for these?
