Pelosi discovers the Rick Roll

This is simultaneously hilarious and horrifying. Shouldn't the Speaker's people have better things to do?

What the heck was that?

BTW, isn't that a copyright violation? I posted a YouTube video of me flying an RC plane with some background music from the Transformers movie, and YouTube's new automated system to detect copyrighted songs in videos removed my audio. I wonder if that could happen here ...

What the fuck doesn't even seem to cover this.
Odd.

It's nice of them to include a comment directing oldies to google "rick roll". Perhaps they should also google "awful internet memes".

Nice to see that this lame internet meme, which is a feat in itself considering the competition, managed to find its way to the upper echelons of government. Maybe we should expect Obama to bust out a "How can she slap?" reference or to accidentaly the whole oath?

Only certain artists and companies are really vigilant about that sort of thing. Prince won't allow any of his music anywhere on Youtube. But whoever owns the rights to Rick Astley's music would be a fool to try to do the same.

Of course, they're even behind the times for non-internet folk since the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade did the same thing, with actual Rick Astley.

True. Well, their automated system to detect music works very well though, too well actually. I read from somebody who was taping an event and there was background ambient music of some copyrighted song in the background and got flagged as well. It's getting pretty ridiculous.

I watched that with my sister and 9-year-old niece, and had to uncomfortably explain it to both of them. They still didn't get it, but my sister enjoyed the song. "Wow, where's he been, anyway?"

As I was watching it, I was wondering what anyone not familiar with net culture would think. The thought of explaining it to anyone who didn't know about it always makes me laugh.

"Well, you tell someone about a video that they would want to see, but then you send them a link to a Rick Astley video."
"Why?"
"Because it's funny".
"No it isn't."

My guess is you should just tell them that, like the shake & bake, that just happened and leave it at that.
