For the first time, actor Jeremy Piven defended his sudden departure from a successful Broadway play due to mercury poisoning in an exclusive interview on "Good Morning America" today.

The "Entourage" star left a leading role in the critically praised Broadway revival of "Speed-the-Plow" less than two months after the show opened because of fatigue caused by mercury poisoning.

Piven said he was "brought to [his] knees" by his condition and said that on doctor's orders he "couldn't do it."

"The last thing I ever thought about doing was not completing this run. I've never not completed anything in my life," the Emmy-winning actor said. "They pulled me out of this thing, and that's the truth."

"You talk about 'the show must go on,' this is in my DNA. To have the rap be on me that I walked out on this thing. … This was the greatest moment of my life," he said.

Though Piven spent three days in the hospital, his claim was met with harsh skepticism by many.

"I talked to Jeremy on the phone, and he told me that he discovered that he had a very high level of mercury. So my understanding is that he is leaving show business to pursue a career as a thermometer," "Speed-the-Plow" playwright David Mamet told Daily Variety in December when Piven's departure was announced.

"He's a brilliant playwright and that's a great line," a smiling Piven said today. "It's a very funny line."

But Piven said the effects of the poisoning were nothing to joke about.

I like how the video is frozen on Jeremy giving a look that seems to say, "Hey, I'm just a big teddy bear. You know you want to believe me. Now come over here and let me snort some coke off your tits, Diane."

I heard me met a little hottie at Britney Spears' 27th birthday party, and wanted to run off to vactaion with her instead of doing the play.

'Plow' producers file grievance against Piven

NEW YORK – The producers of "Speed-the-Plow" say they have filed a grievance with Actors' Equity Association, the stage actors' union, against Jeremy Piven for abruptly leaving the Broadway revival last month.

Piven quit the David Mamet comedy less than two months after it opened to favorable reviews at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. The actor's doctor said Piven was unable perform because of high levels of mercury in his system, possibly caused by eating large amounts of raw fish.

No date for the grievance proceedings was announced.

William H. Macy currently is playing Piven's role of an ambitious Hollywood producer in the production, which also stars Raul Esparza and Elisabeth Moss.

Jeremy Piven: Producers' Grievance Is 'Absurd'

Jeremy Piven is fighting back at a grievance filed against him by the producers of the Broadway play he withdrew from last month.

"The claims made by the producers of Speed-the-Plow are absurd and outrageous," Piven's rep tells ET. "Mr. Piven's serious medical condition has been well documented by multiple physicians. He withdrew from the play due to medical necessity on the advice of his doctors, after he was hospitalized and warned by his physicians that enforced rest was necessary in order to avoid serious medical problems, including a heart attack.

"His symptoms included extreme fatigue, spacial problems, difficulty remembering his lines, difficulty maintaining his balance, and an alarmingly low resting heart rate. Mr. Piven followed his doctors' advice, although his forced withdrawal from the show was an enormous personal disappointment since it was a life-long dream to perform on Broadway.

"Although the producers had an opportunity to have Mr. Piven examined by their own physician, they never did so. The results of such an examination would have undoubtedly corroborated the conclusions of Mr. Piven's treating physicians and would have confirmed the medical necessity of his departure from the show.

"It is ironic that the producers have filed a Grievance against Mr. Piven, since if anyone has legal claims relating to this matter, it is Mr. Piven. Among other things, the production failed to pay his required compensation and he has been defamed in the media by their false accusations."

Speed-the-Plow producers filed a grievance with the Actors' Equity Association against Piven for leaving the play less two months after it premiered, says the Associated Press. William H. Macy of 'Fargo' fame has taken over Piven's starring role.

Why has this been daily news around the world for weeks?
It's not like he flew a plane into a river or is a black president or a winter storm...

Jeremy Piven is a douche, and he's going to admit it. Even if the whole world must be sacrificed to do so.

He will either die onstage or in the public eye.
