Karakter (1997)

I'm surprised I had never heard of this one before, especially since it won best foreign film in 1998. This is also the first film from The Netherlands that I had ever seen, as well as one of the best films I've seen in a long while. It's some parts character study, other parts hard drama and still others thriller.

The performances are great, especially Jan Decleir, who some might know from another great film, the Belgian thriller De Zaak Alzheimer, which is actually in mostly Dutch, though not considered a purely Dutch film. Also good is the main protagonist, Fedja van Huêt, who I'm sure like everyone else here I had never heard of, but apparently he's been on a few European shooting stars listed, and is a pretty big deal in Holland. The photography is perfect in capturing 1920s (what was supposed to be) Rotterdam, though it was actually filmed mostly in Belgium. Paleis van Boem's score is also very haunting and appropriate for the style in which the film is shot.

I know I probably won't get a lot of replies, but try and get a hold of this movie if you can. You won't regret it.

I've always loved this film. I love a good character piece and this is a straight up cast of wonderful Dickensian creations. Stumbled across it years ago on one of the pay cable channels and instantly fell for it. Jan Decleir is just plain mezmerizing as Dreverhaven, but I have to give accolades to Victor Löw's work as De Gankelaar. I could watch an entire film centered around him. I guess it shouldn't be surprising that a film entitled Karakter is full of great ones. A Definite recommend.

Was thinking of starting this exact thread the other day. Amazing amazing movie - not to mention one of the best shot I've ever seen. Whatever happened to Mike Van Diem, the director? Apparently, he was attached to direct Spy Games and then something happened and was replaced by Tony Scoot/

Karakter is indeed a great movie. I can also recommend the book (if it's translated in different languages seek it out)

De Zaak Alzheimer is a Belgian film, thank you very much. For Decleir's magnum opus, search out Daens, the true story of a catholic priest who became a hero of the socialist (!) movement.

Jan Decleir also starred also in the Dutch movie "Antonia" which won the Foreign film Oscar a year before.

I like to think of him as an underrated Max von Sydow type actor. I won't say he's better, but he's certainly close.
