The Official Obama Inauguration thread

Thread Starter
Just place-keeping here for the events between now and Tuesday. And to momentarily revel in the schradenfreude of this glorious victory, before Obama becomes yet another asshole in the pantheon of American political assholes.

This will be one of the first inaugurations that I'll bother to watch live. It kinda gives me chills thinking that we actually got this guy to the office.

TOAST: Keeping my fingers crossed and my eyes open for the next four years.

Here here.

It's funny- a friend of mine is heading down there to take pictures for a newspaper, and another friend's been called in by the Guard (yeah, from friggin' NYC!) to help with security.

Going to be an insane, fun time... can't wait to watch it.

What does everyone have planned for Tuesday? I'm going to a movie theater in a nearby theater to watch the ceremony streamed live...and I'm still searching for post inaugural celebrations for that evening.

Probably not the proper place for this, but I've been wondering today what came of all of those hardcore Obama detractors exposed on Youtube. Particularly some of those standing in line at the infamous McCain/Palin PA rally, and that batshit "Barrrrrack Huuuusaaaaaane" slackjawed bitch. Wonder how they're going to celebrate on Tuesday.

I'm going to be in class. I wonder if the prof will flip on the ol' telly when it matters. Probably not.
I'm torn between watching it on a "normal" channel or on The Daily Show's live coverage.
I heard some of the concert on NPR. Bruce Springsteen led the entire audience in a rousing and cheerful singalong of This Land Is Your Land, This Land Is My Land.

Watched the special today. Some great performances and speeches. Stevie Wonder and Usher (Shakira was kinda a non-entity) singing "Higher Ground" was a highlight, particularly because it was the only performance that got Obama standing up and singing/dancing along. I also enjoyed Will.I.Am/Sheryl Crowe/Herbie Hancock singing "One Love". Josh Grobin, U2, and Garth Brooks were good. Don't really remember any of the other performances. Oddest choices for celebrity speakers go to Jack Black, Kal Pen, and George Lopez. The eagle salute was bizarre (let's watch a restrained bird flap around on a guy's arm?). And of course, Barack. Always a great orator.

The African-American association at Universal is hosting a viewing of the inauguration in one of our sound stages. Gonna try to slip out and watch.

SCENE: OUTDOORS. The Steps of the Capital Building in Washington DC.
DAY
A huge crowd watches as Barrack Obama is sworn in as the next President.

SHIFT TO EVENING: The same location hours later. The steps are now empty. A cold wind blows paper (ribbons, event programs, newspapers etc) across the scene.

CAMERA ZOOMS to on a shiny object on one of the steps.

ZOOM TO: a ring with the Presidential seal!

A WHITE HAND moves into frame from the RIGHT and picks up the ring, holding it up towards the camera.

UNSEEN VOICE: "HAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!"

CUE: QUEEN Soundtrack

It is the same thing that gave me hope from the day we began this campaign for the presidency nearly two years ago; a belief that if we could just recognize ourselves in one another and bring everyone together - Democrats, Republicans, and Independents; Latino, Asian, and Native American; black and white, gay and straight, disabled and not - then not only would we restore hope and opportunity in places that yearned for both, but maybe, just maybe, we might perfect our union in the process.

This is what I believed, but you made this belief real. You proved once more that people who love this country can change it. And as I prepare to assume the presidency, yours are the voices I will take with me every day I walk into that Oval Office - the voices of men and women who have different stories but hold common hopes; who ask only for what was promised us as Americans - that we might make of our lives what we will and see our children climb higher than we did.

It is this thread that binds us together in common effort; that runs through every memorial on this mall; that connects us to all those who struggled and sacrificed and stood here before.

It is how this nation has overcome the greatest differences and the longest odds - because there is no obstacle that can stand in the way of millions of voices calling for change."

From Sunday. Anyone watch Pete Seeger and Bruce Springsteen singing "This Land is Your Land"? I ain't ashamed to say I teared up.

Just the image of Obama in the shadow of Lincoln gives me chills.

I haven't been asleep since yesterday. I probably won't until sometime Tuesday night. Such an awesome time to be alive.

FYI -

Quote:
After days of controversy and outrage from the religious right, openly gay Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson opened Barack Obama's inauguration concert on the National Mall today with a request that the nation pray for "understanding that our president is a human being and not a messiah."

But only the people at the concert heard that, because HBO did not televise Robinson's message.

On Gene Robinson, from the Huffington Post:

New Hampshire Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson, a vocal gay rights leader, will open President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration with a prayer on Sunday's kick-off event at the Lincoln Memorial.

"I am writing to tell you that President-Elect Obama and the Inaugural Committee have invited me to give the invocation at the opening event of the Inaugural Week activities, We are One, to be held at the Lincoln Memorial," Robinson wrote in an email to friends.

The announcement comes after weeks of outcry from the gay community over Obama's choice of evangelical, anti-gay pastor Rick Warren to deliver the inaugural invocation.

"It's important for any minority to see themselves represented in some way," Robinson said in an interview with the Concord Monitor. "Whether it be a racial minority, an ethnic minority or, in our case, a sexual minority. Just seeing someone like you up front matters."

Robinson is the first openly gay diocesan bishop in the Anglican Communion. "God never gets it wrong. The church often takes a long time to get it right. It is a human institution, but one capable of self-correction," Robinson told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. "I believe in my heart that the church got it wrong about homosexuality. There is great excitement in my heart to be living in a time when the church is starting to get it right."

Robinson said he would love to sit down with Rick Warren but believed that the California pastor has "perpetrated lies about the gay, lesbian and bisexual community."

This exclusion is truly an outrage. I just wanted to take the time to express my own disappointment, make this request: if you are also unhappy about Gene Robinson's prayer not being televised to please take 5 minutes to let HBO know how you feel CONTACT HBO

Contacted Sunday night by AfterElton.com concerning the exclusion of Robinson's prayer, HBO said via email, "The producer of the concert has said that the Presidential Inaugural Committee made the decision to keep the invocation as part of the pre-show." Uncertain as to whether or not that meant that HBO was contractually prevented from airing the pre-show, we followed up, but none of the spokespeople available Sunday night could answer that question with absolute certainty. However, it does seem that the network's position is that they had nothing to do with the decision.

Hysterical. The network's position is that they had nothing to do with the decision of what to show on...the network that they own and program.

Extra amusing considering the thrust of President Obama's (since he won't be the "-elect" anymore when he gives this) speech is responsibility and accountability. I don't care whether they showed it or not, but they should own up to not showing it for whatever reason.

As for tomorrow, I'll be up bright and early, fighting the crowds, and ready to stand most of the day. I've wanted to attend an inauguration for some time, and it might as well be this one. I'm more excited about what tomorrow represents than by President Obama himself (though I am excited for him). It's the transition of power between philosophically differing parties. And like the previous 54, it'll be peaceful, civil, and at its core, a renewal of our democratic values. After 6 brutally divisive years of partisan politics, that will be something to see.

I envy those people that will get to witness this event live. This is definitely a historical event that they'll be able to talk about for the rest of their lives. I DON'T envy the conditions that those witnesses will have to endure, however.

I'm totally disconnected from all of this (other than volunteer day - I'm going to bring some cans down to a food drive - info from here) since this weekend has been consumed with my son's science fair project. What should I be watching? Is there a directory anywhere of everything that's going on?

Like I said earlier, I'm going to a theater that's running a live stream of MSNBC's coverage of the ceremony.

You can go here and find out if they have anything near you.

If you can't get to a TV, I believe CNN.com will be streaming the events live.

Schedule:

8 a.m. - coverage begins
11:30 a.m. - swearing in ceremony
2:30 p.m. - inaugural parade
7:00 p.m. - inaugural ball

Barack and The Beast

Previous Presidential limos have gone by the moniker "Cadillac One" but this one is being referred to as "The Beast."

Quote:
President-Elect Barack Obama will get an all-new Cadillac limousine when he takes office Tuesday, and it appears, like his increased security detail, it will be the safest presidential ride to ever grace Pennsylvania Avenue.

The new Commander-in-Chief will ride in the back of an extended Cadillac DTS, not unlike the car used by outgoing President George W. Bush while in office. A more conservative design than the rest of Cadillac's Art and Science range, this DTS even goes so far to eliminate the controversial chromed engine vents on the front side fenders, giving the car a more stately appearance.

While no photographs of the interior have been provided, no doubt for security reasons, the specially-equipped Caddy is expected to have all the latest electronics including enough video screens to even get Malia Ann and Sasha excited while giving Michelle a break from the "when are we gonna get there syndrome," not to mention keep the president well informed of the world's goings on while traveling to and from his new abode.

Cadillac hasn't released details as to the new limousines ballistic capabilities, and won't anytime soon, also for security reasons, but it's safe to say that it is based on one of GM's heavy-duty truck platforms, needed to support the weight of all the armour plating needed to withstand potential gun shots, bomb blasts or rocket fire. Other information we've garnered from various unofficial sources report that the floor of the limo is reinforced with five-inch thick steel plate to protect from undercar explosions or a direct hit from above if the car is overturned, while the tires are Kevlar-reinforced to be shred and puncture proof, with steel rims underneath that will enable escape even if no tires are wrapped around them. An armour-plated gas tank features special foam filler that prevents explosion even if it suffers a direct hit, plus the trunk holds an oxygen supply system and firefighting equipment.

The doors are armour-plated too, with eight-inch thick steel making them reportedly weigh as much as the cabin door of a 757 jet. They open up to a passenger compartment that seats four behind a glass partition that only the president can lower to speak with the front occupants. The rear windows are larger than in previous generation presidential limos, and the car's height has grown while its overall footprint remains about the same.

Up front there are defence accessories to assist the trained detail such as night vision cameras, pump-action shotguns and tear gas cannons. Bottles of the president's blood are also kept aboard, if needed in an emergency. The front windshield is capable of withstanding armour-piercing bullets, while the CIA-trained driver's side window is the only one that opens, but only three inches to speak with security detail outside, or perhaps to pay a road toll.

On a lighter note, an embroidered presidential seal has been positioned at the centre of the rear seat back panel, as well as on each rear door trim panel. Presidential seals can also be found on the exterior rear door panels, while the U.S. flag flies from the right front fender and the presidential standard from the left front fender, when the president is traveling inside. LED spotlights illuminate the flags at night.

"Cadillac is honored to again provide a new Presidential Limousine," said Mark McNabb, North America vice president, Cadillac/Premium Channel. "This is a great American tradition that we're delighted to renew with an all-new car featuring the best of Cadillac's dramatic design and technology."

Cadillac has been the ride of presidential preference since President Wilson rode through the streets of Boston during a World War I victory parade in 1919, and of course has been escorting dignitaries, celebrities and other VIPs since the company set its claim as the Standard of the World.

Video is not allowed at work here. I'll have to watch a recap on youtube tomorrow night.

And that limo will be the most industructable vehicle since the Blues Bros Mobile.

Quote:
Obama spent the day moving around Washington to celebrate public service and Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, switching easily from self-deprecation to faux cockiness to calls for action.

"Make sure I do something simple," he told volunteers sprucing up Sasha Bruce House, a shelter for homeless teens in one of Washington's poorer neighborhoods. "Don't give me plumbing or electrical work."

He took a roller on an extension pole and began painting a dorm wall blue as reporters, photographers, volunteers and Secret Service agents jostled for space.

"That's a good stroke there, what do you think?" Obama said, admiring the smooth blue coat. "This is good practice because I'm moving to a new house tomorrow."
He's awesome.
