The Powerpuff Girls

There's a marathon on the Cartoon Network today celebrating the show's 10th anniversary (Jesus....).

There's no two ways about it: this show was fucking great. The jokes, the references, the randomity, the comedic timing, the genius character development and design, the complete and total understanding of superheroes from both East and West.

All that without ever forgetting to be super cute, colorful, and, well, everything a kid's cartoon should be.

Meet The Beat-Alls really needs to be on today.

I think there is a new episode at 8 tonight.

I'm glad they're doing the marathon. I already caught my favorite episode, where Bubbles thinks she's Mojo.

Yeah, the one at 8 is new. From the looks of it, it seems like McCracken used the opportunity to give the show a proper send-off. Which would be great, since the show just kinda disappeared off the schedule with zero fanfare during the original run.

My wife loves this thing like Amy Winehouse loves drugs. And the thing is, it's pretty good.

Fun, fun cartoon. There's more energy in this show than in most action movies.

I always enjoyed the episode in which they switch bodies and Bubbles (Who gets stuck in the Mayor's body) refuses to leave because he's bald.

Yeah, it did seem to be suddenly yanked right after the film tanked.

I've always loved the episode where the girls have to deal with the Gangreen Gang joining their kindergarden class.

The movie tanking is still a fucking tragedy, by the way. It also cost us a Samurai Jack movie, which just makes it worse.

My wife's home watching this even as I type this at work. Which sucks, 'cause I wanted to watch it too. (sigh)

Well, at least I can catch the send off when we get home from the gym.

My little sister got me into this cartoon. What a great show.

Buttercup's my fav.
Buttercup somehow became the cartoon poster girl for tough lesbians. Supplanting Peppermint Patty some years back.

But man could she kick ass.

I would also state that Professor Utonium was the whitest man alive.
Man, I wish _I_ got to stay home and watch this, too! Also, I would need cable. Anyway, I'll have to see that new episode somehow.

I think I still have a Valentine's Day PPG marathon on VHS from '99 or so. Maybe I can dig that out and enjoy.

So, I'd never seen the PowerProf episode before. I can't think of another show, live or animated, that could get away with an entire 15 minute stretch sans dialogue where it's just a grown up playing with and struggling to spend more time with his kids.

I remember the ep in which the girls try out new personas and Buttercup got the angsty Spawn one. It was a send up on the whole thing.

Then there was the one ep in which the entire episode revolved around forrest creatures including the ending announcer being done in squirrell chitters.

Mojo Jojo was one of the best parts of this show. I was surprised to find out that Roger Jackson, the voice of Mojo, also did the voice of the killer for all three Scream movies.

"Can't go out yet. Too light."

And Bubbles had some nonsense anime bunny suit and had to ride the bus everywhere.

And the giant attacking monster ends up having a friendly sit down talk with the girls about being yourself, and the way things work on Monster Island.

Yeah, that episode was full of awesome.

Probably the best Beatles related show since The Be-Sharps episode.

Not as good as the Beat-Alls episode, but it was also probably the inspiration for the innocent bystander in the movie who only spoke in Van Halen lyrics.

I don't recall the title, but there was a great "Day in the Life of..." episode with Mojo Jojo.

This episode was just on. When Mojo gets turned into a fish and the girls get turned into a Cook, the Gortons Fisherman and Eskimo...I fuckin' lost it. So good....so funny...

To this day, my wife will yell, "Hardcore!" in a reference to Bubbles (they both have blonde hair and blue eyes). In fact, her fantasy football team this year was The Hardcore Bubbles.

Yup, Meet The Beat-Alls is on now, for whoever's near a TV.

Yeah, this was definitely the final episode. There's no where else they can go after this.

And it's perfect. The Dramatic Gopher reference, the girls' version of the perfect world (especially Blossom's), "How did we not notice a tank behind us?!", Mojo Jojo calling it quits, "Everybody Wants To Rule The World", the go-karts, "That was beautiful." The big twist got ruined by the commercials they've been running all day, but it didn't make it any less funny watching Mojo celebrate.

Quite the Irish funeral for the show.

Just watched the final episode. God, I forgot how fast that show is. Everyone talks atthefuckingspeedoflightwithnopauses.

Really enjoyed it, the twist was a little obvious but well done. When Mojo was singing Tears for Fears...amazing. The acting on the professor when they didn't want to use his go-kart, and then the sheer joy on his face when he was in it. The major trying to get a pickle out of a jar. Great stuff.

Glad to see the love for PPG on this thread - I've always found it hard to introduce the show to friends, they're like "dude why are you being an eight year old girl?"

The whole serie's out on DVD in a big box, with some wonderful special features. I laughed pretty hard at the MojoJojo commentary track "some nice intercutting here...ha! The rug has been pulled from under you, just like in a Capra movie!"
