The Nigerian Victim

This is wonderful.

I've seen stories about dumb people there and there, but this guy is so stupid deserves to be tasered.

A Leamington man has fallen prey to international scam artists who strung him along for more than a year with the promise of millions in cash, but ultimately bilked him and his family of $150,000.

John Rempel said he quit his truck driving job, lost friends, borrowed money and crossed the globe in pursuit of a non-existent inheritance, after he was contacted by e-mail in what is known as a Nigerian 419 scam.

Rempel said he borrowed $55,000 from an uncle in Mexico and his parents gave him $60,000 on credit to cover fees for transferring $12.8 million into his name.

“They’re in it now because of me,” said Rempel, 22, breaking into sobs. “If it wasn’t for me, nobody would be in this mess. You think things will work out, but it doesn’t. It’s a very bad feeling. I had lots of friends.

“I never get calls anymore from my friends. You know, a bad reputation.”

Seriously? There's someone out there who hadn't heard of this already?

Someone should call him and say they can get him his friends back for $100 000.

I worked for a guy who was almost caught up in one of these way back in 2001. He was traveling to Europe for adoption and at the time the scam had come through to him and was lesser known. He made arrangements to meet the people in Amsterdam.

They met him at his hotel, asked for the money-about $5K if I recall-and said they would go around the corner to the bank. The money was to be used to pay for access to the safe deposit box where the millions were.

Lucky he was only out a ticket to Amsterdam from Romania.

This one isn't so bad. There was some city administrator back east who damn near bankrupted the city using public funds to finance one of these scams. I like that the guy is crying because he's such an idiot, though.

I need to start my own confidence operation because this shit looks too easy. This guy just took the most expensive IQ test ever.

And failed.

Choked on my coffee with that one. Well played.

I had a husband/wife drivers that were so stupid and lost everything due to one of these stunts. Except in this one they were adopting some kids. Every month or so they would tell me that they needed time off to "pick up their kids" after years of giving money to these people.

So many of us tried to warn them, asking them if they had seen all of these scams. Of course they would always get upset with us and insist that this one wasn't a scam: THEY EVEN GOT TO TALK TO THE KIDS!

Morons. They deserve what they get for their stupidity.

Yeah, those stupid assholes. Wanting to adopt a kid, what a bunch of greedy bastards!

If you're dumb enough to go through unofficial channels to procure something like kids, then you deserve everything bad that happens to you.

That's really dense. You're not stupid, so I know you understand what I'm saying.

Hey, I don't really get a lot of pleasure when people ... even stupid people ... get scammed.

Now, if you get scammed for being selfish and greedy, that's a different thing. But hey, whatever floats your boat.

A scam is a scam. We live in an information age where people should not fall for it and yet they do.

Hooray for black market babies though.

And more importantly, you probably don't deserve imaginary kids.

We're supposed to feel bad about people getting scammed while trying to buy a baby in the black market? Huh.

I'd say that I have to "Snopes" about 75% of the emails I get (forwarded) from my Mom. She never learns. I don't think she's given anyone her personal info, thank God.

I just got one of these this morning. She claimed to be blind. With lung cancer. That had spread to her brain. Of course I believe her.
