Tonight: Franz Ferdinand

So, the album, due next week, already leaked, and it's a surprise. I've been lukewarm at first with these guys, like a couple of songs, but their 2nd album, which apparently slightly disappointed most of their fans, was better.

Tonight is by far their best album, taking the sound that made them famous, and improving on it, and after a week of listening I can't put it down.

Ulysses starts the album and gives it the tone that will direct the entire thing, so if you don't like it, stop right there. From melding funk, bits of disco (No You Girls) to electronica (Lucid Dreams), it's never boring by any stretch.

Anyone else tried it?

I first tried Franz Ferdinand at some kind of hippie commune. Everybody was egging me on and...I was curious.

So I put the earphones on.

I like Franz. I'll have to steal this one. But hey, if they play here, I will buy tickets.

As a longtime Franz fan (well, as long as they've been around, at least), I find Tonight: Franz Ferdinand really, really difficult to listen to. Maybe it's because I've come to appreciate their slower songs mores. Maybe it's because I'm too hooked on the sound of some of their B-sides, like the awesome "Ghost in a Ditch". Whatever it is, it's making me want to delete Tonight from my collection and never, ever get near the songs again (especially the CD version of "Lucid Dreams").

I was excited to hear the band go in a new direction, but damn.

At first listen, I wasn't too in love with this disc. I guess some of the fun about Franz Ferdinand comes from the fact that they create really great hooks and have no shame in that. This album, while having a boatload of hooks and catchy riffs, plays it down some. The songs aren't as memorable after the first spin.

But I've taken two more listens today and the songs are definitely growing on me. Their first album is still their best but I will rank this higher than the second (which I also enjoyed, just not as much as the first)

What I like about this album is how innocuous the choruses and hooks seem to be until you've heard the songs a couple times and then they are impossible to get out of your head.

Live Alone has got to be a single, eventually. I mean, might just be Franz' best song.

Live Alone is probably one of their catchiest songs ever. It's great.

I can only say "that last track". It's an almost epic ending. The fact this thread has 6 post makes me sad.

I'm seeing these guys in about three weeks so I dug out their older albums and whilst I dig about half of the debut and certain tracks off the second album Tonight honestly feels like their first fully formed album to me, like their previous offerings were just EPs.
