Are there any gems on the "director's cut" DVD?

I only have the normal version.

This film is pretty much a superhero movie, it's so patently ridiculous.

Wells delivery of that line makes me crack up.
Yeah, that delivery is amazing.

Actually, I arrived at the conclusion soon after my post that Lester simply asked himself what is the *only* thing more awesome than two huge dudes beating the shit out of each other? There isn't a person on this planet that doesn't know the answer to that question.

The shed scene is a bit longer and more graphic. There's an added scene where Matrix talks about how he wasn't around much when Chenny was a baby.

New interviews with Lester, Wells, and Chong. Some funny archived bits of Arnold being interviewed on the set. Plus these alternate closing one-liners that were cut:

Well worth it for true fans.

"I think it was too much pressure for you, Bennett", and "______(fuck?), I hate small talk." aren't bad, but I'm glad they stuck with the line they did use.

Find this in 2 easy steps, kind of funny. I love Arnold's honestly while Sly is the one going into politician spin mode.
I always wondered what kind of elite fighting team Matrix was on ... all his former associates that are killed off in the opening look well past their prime.
I still wonder what happened to the 16-18" long, 4" diameter tube of Bennet-guts that must've shot out of that pipe in order for the steam to be let out.

Commando is such a brilliant movie. I long for the days when Arnie was the box office king. Ah the 80's.

The Running Man was based on Stephen King's novel. Predator (and Predator 2) are closer to 'The Most Dangerous Game' than TRM is.

Really? I might need to get that on Blu-ray when I can...

Wasn't the Zodiac Killer's favorite movie The Most Dangerous Game? Hmmms....

Also, nothing I can say about this movie that hasn't already been said. It's so fucking great.
Between this and True Lies, Arnold's taste in daughters was remarkably prescient.

There's also Last Action Hero. His taste in daughters seemed to be intact even when his taste in scripts was questionable.

Arnold's taste in daughters not withstanding... this is the best scene from Last Action Hero

No wonder they never caught the Zodiac Killer, and wasn't there another Zodiac like killing in NYC after the ones in FC ended?

Now, if there's ever a Criterion release of Commando, now we know what essay should be included in it.

This movie IS so head of its time. Arnold as John Matrix - come 1999 Joel Silver will produce The Matrix and the race relations between The Gov. and Rae Dawn Chong. You know in the movie-verse - they married and had three more mocha-latta babies.

Expendables had better have an epic ending theme:

Excellent Commando article. Mark Lester is a national treasure. Now that the Commando special edition has been out for a while, and these articles have shed light upon the behind the scenes stuff, I wish Mark Lester would do the same for Showdown in Little Tokyo.

Just read through this thread and I gotta say that the homeroticism that it evokes was something I was not aware of. What the hell is wrong with me?

Where the hell did Matrix get a bulldozer in the middle of the night? Could he have been just a weeee bit more subtle when breaking into a surplus store?
What surplus store keeps rocket launchers, machine guns, and grenades in a back room? Is this the same universe as Falling Down?
Good point. i guess the same surplus store that keeps a bulldozer in its parking lot.
Guys, guys...he was under a clearly defined time constraint. Allow him to 'one stop shop' in peace, willya?
I'm concerned people are talking of subtlety and tact in the context of this film.

He obtained the bulldozer through his own methods and then deployed it as he saw fit: by driving it through the problem.
Commando is certainly great fodder for Adam and Jamie and the rest of the Mythbusters crew.

Starting with is it possible to tear the passenger seat out of a sports car or perhaps can that balloon thingy hold a 200+ pound bodybuilder swinging through a crowed shopping mall hell bent on finding those who kidnapped his daughter??
All I know is I'm getting a Porsche, for when I get hit on the sides - I know when I drive off into the night - there will be no clear signs of damage.
One of the great movie flubs that i can recall. Was about to post this little nugget myself.

Recall reading Arnie's book bio:

Fantastic: The Life of Arnold Schwarzenegger

A great read about his motivations and rise in Hollywood. The man is smart and it's no surprise he is Govenor of California.

His rivalry with Stallone was really fascinating. *With Sly having made Rambo II, Arnie happened to shoot Commando and everybody thought it was a cheap knock-off of Rambo II and it didn't do well at the box office. IMO: I find Commando vastly superior and more enjoyable compared to the cartoony Rambo II.

How the fuck is Sly gonna pretend to be dead, when the chopper is shot-down and he pulls out a bazooka? Get the fuck outta here...

*It was to this effect - I may not have described accurately.
Apart from the brief mention of his Yellow Porsche, this thread lacks any mention of David Patrick Kelly.

Sully: Here's twenty dollars to get some beers in Val Verde. It'll give us all a little more time with your daughter.
Henriques: Heh.
Matrix: You're a funny man, Sully, I like you. That's why I'm going to kill you last.

He's made a career out of playing slimy assholes.
I hope to God that the proposed remake of this never gets off the ground.

Its been months now and no word. So hopefully that was only a rumour.

With Adobe ImageReady you can convert .mov and .avi files to animated gifs. I'm sure there are other ways but that's what I use.

Soooo... the reason Commando is better than Rambo II is that Rambo was "cartoony" and he did something unbelievable? Either you're joking or my brain is going to explode.

The day the director's cut of Commando came out I went to Best Buy to pick it up and who was there? Kobe Bryant. Coincidence? Less then two years later the guy finally wins a championship without Shaq. Does anyone doubt he watched Commando every night for the next 18 months to give him the edge he needed?

You beat me to the punch on that one. Rambo certainly had its share of ridiculous plot moments but Commando was like a celebration of excessively over-the-top action and that works for it. If you were to see Matrix rip a guy's arm off and beat him to death with it, you'd never go, "NOW THAT SHOULDN'T BE!". It might take you out of a Rambo film but Matrix to me is supposed to be the most over-the-top action hero there is.

Also, I'm sure this has probably come up (maybe even by me) in this thread already but I love the demise of the guy who meets Sully at the mall. It's like all shit has hit the fan and he could easily just slide out the back door without being noticed but he decides to come running out like a madman, firing a gun. He should have just saved everyone the time and just lit himself on fire before taking a freefall dive from the top floor of the mall.

In watching this the other night, I realized that Matrix never actually get's it on with Rae Dawn Chong, in any other action film they probably would end up banging each other, I guess it's kind of refreshing.

Can't say I agree. I think in 80's action films in particular, the men always seem more attracted to committing violence than they do in getting on with their female counterparts. There was very little sex in Arnold's eighties filmography at all. The only film I can think of from that decade where we can actually confirm that he gets some is Twins, which is not an action film. A lot of these films really do more to support that theoretical link between violence and repressed sexuality. Traditionally, even the action heroes who were given wives or long-term girlfriends were not exactly painted as the definition of "romantic". I think having Schwarzenegger stop in the middle of a rescue mission to find his daughter where clearly the clock is ticking would have been a little weird. The only time you could have snuck in something romantic between the two would have been the end but at the point, the emphasis is on a reunion with his daughter. Too much love to juggle for that one.
He got it on with Kathryn Harrold in Raw Deal, didn't he?
He gets it on with at least three women in Conan.

Edit: No time for love, Dr. Jones.

Or maybe he was saving it just for Bennett.
You're probably right on that one. Too much romantic chemistry with Chong would have ruined the nice little homoerotic tone the film had going for itself.

Yes, I do recall a wild orgy scene in that flick, now that you mention it. But I've never really seen Conan as a traditional 80's action flick. More of an adventure fantasy but I guess you can put that and Red Sonja on the list.
Yeah, the plot really doesn't lend itself to Arnold stopping to Schwarzendong up in Rae Dawn's chong. I feel like a jerk defending Commando's sound logic but oh well.

I also feel the need to point out that some folks mistakenly believe that Bennett is wearing chainmail. He is in fact wearing a gray sweater vest thing that looks like chainmail. More gay? Less gay? I'll let you be the judge.
Has anyone ever addressed how two of the biggest badasses (Matrix and Bennett) in the U.S. Army are both foreigners; one with a German accent, the other with a Australian??

These guys have given Commando far more thought than I would have believed possible.

That site is crazy! I guess there's a site for everything nowadays. I wonder how much traffic they actually get.

Okay... I know pointing out "goofs" in Commando is old news but I noticed a new one. In a film as loved and scrutinized as this one, finding a new one makes me feel like I've accomplished something special.

When Matrix gets to the island and is using the binoculars to check out the compound, the POV shots have him panning right, the close ups of Matrix have him panning left... this goes back and forth a few times just make sure it's nice and wrong.

Not a big deal, but it's not even on IMDB's (amazingly thorough) "goofs" list so it must be news to some of you out there. BTW: Is there a film with a longer "goofs" list than Commando?

... I really wish my XBOX didn't shit the bed last week.

Nope. He has his chance, but he 'knocks himself out' just as she's taking off his shirt (and admiring his ridiculous chest). He does that to go under-undercover to catch her giving his information to smoothed-faced Robert Davi.

He's married to Blanche Baker, and we get the awesome fight between the two at the beginning, where, after she throws a cake at Arnie (and misses, of course...dumb broad should know Arnie can't be hit by cake), he gives us the classic line:

"You should not drink and bake."

God I miss 80's movies.

WAY more gay, but the movie's already so supremely gay it really doesn't matter.

This was something that has always made me laugh as well. As Timothy Q pointed out, there isn't a movie with a longer 'goofs' list. There are so many that they all haven't even been pointed out.
Are there any other action movies where a woman follows the hero around making hilarious comments besides "Commando" and "Universal Soldier"? Roger Ebert astutely pointed out that Ally Walker did a world of good for the latter with her commentary on all the craziness around her (although I don't agree with him that she's just about the only good thing in the movie, which is probably my favourite 'guilty pleasure' flick) and the girl in this one gave me the biggest laugh of the movie with her "You guys eat too much red meat!" line during the motel fight/banter.

First that come to mind are Samantha Mathis in Broken Arrow and Amy Madigan in Streets of Fire.

And of course Sandra Bullock in Demolition Man and Speed.
Erika Eleniak in Under Siege is another prime example.
