BTW...after the heft of the first three seasons, did Season 4 seem like a huge condensing to anyone else? I can understand the need to fit all of the plot beats into a specifically limited number of episodes now, but damn...there was some seriously great character stuff in the earlier seasons that I felt was missing in the most recent.
Not that what was there was bad, mind you.

Personally, I feel like it's a 'grass is always greener' thing. Part of what gave them the space to explore the characters in the detail that they did was the open-ended, ongoing, no-end-in-sight status of the show, along with a longer season.
That gave us some exquisite character moments, but also gave us filler and water-treading.
Now we're getting the meaty stuff, with less of the meandering of before, so it's a trade off.
I look at the show much like I'd look at a novel - the first 2/3's are typically where the character stuff tends to flower, with the last 1/3 devoted to the ramping up of plot and tension.
