LOST --- Season 5

Let it begin.

Anyone have plans for tomorrow night's premiere?
I'm watching in HD for the first time. I'm really looking forward to it. I'll probably skip the montage show since I watched the mini-marathon last week, but consider my ass planted for the new stuff.
Yeah, I watched all three eps they showed last week. I doubt I'll watch the montage show either.
Have we seen Sun's baby?

I think if Jin is dead, it's Micheal's.
...

Nah, I'm just playin.

I have to miss tomorrow's episodes, so I guess I'll check em out when they are online the following day I hope.
This will be the first time I've watched the series during the initial run. I almost don't want to. Waiting a week for the next episode as opposed to just loading up the ABC site and seeing what happens next sounds like torture.
No way. The fun is coming to this thread and seeing the whacked out theories people come up with. And there are some CRAZY theories.
Pumped.

Already popping the corn, and strangely enough, I think I saw the island outside my window just now.
I still think it would have been cooler if Vincent had been the one in the coffin instead.

This thread's going to be a hell of a thing to read. Just give me another scene this season of Sayid whooping someone's ass and/or breaking someone's neck with his legs and I'll be pleased.
I will be watching it online with some friends tomorrow. It's hard to guess how Desmond is going to leave terra firma.

I'm stoked to have people to talk about it with.

Can't... wait... *squeee!*

Two new episodes?

Am I the only one who has been busting their ass to avoid clips and spoilers from the premiere? The TV and internet both seemed set on ruining this for me.

"Tonight, tonight, it's coming tonight. Hot damn! Tonight!"

Two new episodes!

Hour One: Clip-a-palooza

Hour Two: "Because You Left"

Hour Three: "The Lie"

Let's do this thing. I'm ready for my crippling obsession to begin again.

"You're not supposed to raise him!"

ETA:

Doc Jensen's first 'teaser column' of the season is up. Looks like he has the same theory of fate v. free will that a few of us have been bandying about (the whole 'you can't change the end-result, but you can change the details' thing).

ETA II: J Wood's first column of the season is up as well. He's pretty interesting to read along with - he picks up on a lot of details that, intentional or not, really deepen the show for me.
I was set to chime in and say, "Um, guys, it starts Thursday."

I then checked TV Guide.

AIIIIIEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!! Can't wait.

I'm in the same boat, and I'm not looking forward to it at all. BUT...new Lost! I can't wait.
I plan on watching all 3 hours, I didn't watch any of the repeats last week. I'm actually interested in Lie to Me also, but that's gonna sit on DVR until the weekend probably. 3 hours of TV is about my max.
Yay! Today finally arrived. Quite a week.

Really looking forward to discuss this with you lot. These discussions with all of you have even enhanced the quality of this grand series.

But I would propose a strict non-spoiler policy for this thread. Just in case.
Yes no spoilers or spoilers posing as educated guess or speculation (somebody did the later in Season 4).

Can we follow this in order to follow this thread (or catch up it latter for those who can't arrive here right on time).

before the first post about the episode that was just aired...

I'm gonna do my best to get through the day and then get home and settle down for some Lost. I'll probably end up watching it with my wife and my mom too, since we're all fans. I like to tune in to the show and tune everything else out. My mom likes to ask questions while the show is on. Makes me nuts... I'll need to lay down a 'Commercials Are Discussion Time' rule or I may lose my mind. I don't want to miss a thing (thanks Aerosmith!).

And I too am really looking forward to the chewer discussion. You guys are the best.

This is actually one of my favorite parts of the show. My Mom is sooooo into it, and my phone will ring as soon as it fades to commercial if something crazy happened. My Mom will talk about it non-stop during the commercials and the instant it's back on she says "bye" and hangs up on me.

I've got a friend that does this too - only with texts. I love it. Makes the show that much more fun to watch.

And my father's a serial "talk-while-the-show/movie-is-playing" offender. If I were still at home he'd be driving me out of my mind each week (love ya, pop!). Rich, I say you set that rule and hold her to it. Sanity depends on such things.
Didn't do the "start from season 1, ep 1 and go through latest season finale" this time. Just hit the high points in Season 3 and went through Season 4 to prepare for tonight. Looking forward to the discussion with everyone.

BTW...after the heft of the first three seasons, did Season 4 seem like a huge condensing to anyone else? I can understand the need to fit all of the plot beats into a specifically limited number of episodes now, but damn...there was some seriously great character stuff in the earlier seasons that I felt was missing in the most recent.

Not that what was there was bad, mind you.

I actually felt that season four was perfectly paced while giving the characters enough room to breeze. I deem this show a character show first and foremost but it was treading water in season three in my mind. There are only so much episodes where I can see Jacks sad face and the umpteenth time of seeing Kate on the run without any development. With the cast at hand it is going to be a hard job to juggle all of them while keeping the development of the characters rolling. But season four tied the mythology near perfect into the character arcs. Really looking forward to see how they are gonna approach this with all the time travelling issues that are at hand now.
My God, this is going to be a long, torturous 10 hours. Ten hours!! Faaaaack, it's gonna be hard concentrating on any work today (and tomorrow, well, I'm already writing that off).

Personally, I feel like it's a 'grass is always greener' thing. Part of what gave them the space to explore the characters in the detail that they did was the open-ended, ongoing, no-end-in-sight status of the show, along with a longer season.

That gave us some exquisite character moments, but also gave us filler and water-treading.

Now we're getting the meaty stuff, with less of the meandering of before, so it's a trade off.

I look at the show much like I'd look at a novel - the first 2/3's are typically where the character stuff tends to flower, with the last 1/3 devoted to the ramping up of plot and tension.

Last season had Ben using Smokey against the mercs and that episode was an exquisite blend of tension, big arc and character stuff.
IMO there's not enough praise for The Constant.

That episode is consistently cited as a/the favorite by the fans of the show I've spoken to.

The Constant gets a lot of love.

Many people have called The Constant the Best moment on TV of 2008. And it will be hard to top that episode.

ETA: Beaten by Jesse. Again.
If anything, The Constant is overpraised. It didn't hit me the way it seems to everyone else, probably because Desmond's never been my favorite character.
Rewatched "The Constant" last night and found it to be as engrossing as the first time around. Desmond and Penny's Christmas Eve phonecall remains one of the most emotional moments I've ever witnessed on a television show.
I don't actually dislike it, so I'm not going to try to change anyone's mind. I just think it's absurd to call it underpraised; it's received nothing but accolades here and everywhere else I've seen. It's probably the most highly-praised episode of the entire run (the S3 finale being the only real competition).

Agreed.

I don't have a deep affection for Desmond or Penny either, but I truly admired the way the episode was plotted, structured and acted, and I thought that the emotion of it was earned (even factoring in that I'm not a Desmond/Penny devotee).

I see that Jan has my back as usual. Jan, do you get the episodes on the same schedule that America does (ie: Will you be starting to watch the show in 3 hours or so)? If so, I envy your being ahead of me in time.

Cheers. But unfortunately our schedule is way different over here. We just got the beginning of season 4 on Monday. Sufficient to say that I have to escape on other, uhm, sources. But I feel morally safe for buying the DVD sets as soon as they are published. So please be easy on me.
Mother of God, I cannot wait for tonight! I don't know why, but it seems the between season wait wasn't as bad this year.

Also, I'll likely watch the recap, just because I'm so excited. I'll be at a friends watching in HD on a big ass projector, so it'll be a kind of geeky party atmosphere. Perfect for a recap episode.
I don't think the season wait was as long. No writer's strike!

That day I was having problems with the wi-fi but you stole the thread after your comment about that episode.

I've avoided every article on Lost, so I don't really know: can anyone tell me if the whole season's going to go straight through, week after week, or will there be any hiatus's this year?
I needed the correct time for tonight and I headed over LOST site and I stopped by the photos and I was perplex...so now I will see at least 4 episodes to refresh my memory.
Syd, I believe they are going straight through.

No hiatus. They're doing what they intended to do starting last season. A longer break (hence no fall episodes) and then continuous episodes in the Spring. The only reason they took a break last year was due to the strike.

YEEEEEEHA!!!! It's about time!

Love enjoying the show with you all, and can't wait to hear your opinions afterward. I don't think I'd enjoy Lost nearly as much w/o CHUD!

I'll probably watch the clip-show, as I haven't had time to rewatch S4 at all (SIGH...). It'll have to be out of the corner of my eye, though, as I get my kids ready for bed. They'll be well out of the way by the time "Because You Left" starts.

Mmmm...popcorn sounds good!
Three hours of LOST?!

Oh my god, oh my god...

*Zap*
Just want to echo the love for the episode The Constant and the excitement for the return of the show. Although, the premiere for us UKers is Sunday. SUNDAY! But fuck that, maybe I'll cheat or something. I don't know.

All I do know is I can't wait for more Desmond, Locke, Sawyer, Sayid and trio of fucktasm that is KATE and PENNY and JULIET. Oh how I can't wait for KATE, PENNY and JULIET.... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

hehe It sounds like you're gonna slip a chloroformed rag over their mouths so they won't bother you during Lost. Good plan!

I see you already emulate Ben“s thinking. You seem to be ready for a good measure of Lost, Sir.
God I love Ben. It's so nice to see a villain so alarming who doesn't rely on physical threat.
