XCOM: UFO DEFENSE (PSone)

This might be my favorite console game of all time. Great concept. I love the way you research new alien techs to use against the aliens. Love that you can build and maintain multiple bases. Love that those bases can be attacked when not defensed properly. Love that this game is nearly impossible on higher levels.

I know that this game and other XCOM games came out for the PC, but where are the other console games? Is anybody aware of any games similar to this game that I might have missed...or that might be coming out in the near future?

I still have this and play it, but it's better on the PC.

XCOM is the game I come back to when all the new games have lost their charm. I would play this (and other) games on the PC except I need a new PC.

It's up there with Laser Squad for my favorite all time turn based squad game.

I'm not sure if it was also released on consoles, but Silent Storm (and its expansion) is the best turn-based action game I've played outside of the X-Com and Fallout universes.

Great post, Bob!

This was one of the first games I bought for my Playstation. Fiendishly addictive and creepy as hell. I'm actually still on my first playthrough. When those alien bastards attacked my base (which I didn't even know was possible), they dealt me such a devastating blow, that I put the game away! It's probably time to pick it up again.

European Playstation owners got the sequel X-COM: TERRORS FROM THE DEEP the year after the first release. Why we never got it over here is a mystery.

After Microprose went under, another company set out to make a "spiritual successor to X-COM. It was to be for the PC and PS2. I thought it looked pretty good. Unfortunately, it got bought and changed into another X-COM themed game.

That's about it for consoles. Which is a shame because there's still a strong interest in the games. Everytime I read a "Franchises We'd Like to See Revived on the Current Generation of Consoles" article, X-COM is always at the top of everyone's wishlist.

But there are a lot similar games for the PC. You can read about them here.

2k Games (a division of Take Two) currently holds the rights to X-COM. So maybe we'll see another version for consoles soon. With online capabilities, I think it'd be great to have one person/side playing the aliens and the other as the humans.

Yeah, gotta build those missle defenses early on. Once you start getting the more advanced weapons and the playing field evens out, the game really takes off.

This game has such a simple concept I'm actually amazed it hasn't really been replicated. Graphics in a game like this really don't mean a whole lot. Take the same turn based system update/add to the weapons and technology and you're done.

X-COM for the PC is over 15 years old--if anything, the older your PC, the better off you are. Still, getting an original copy of the game to run on XP or later would be an adventure. Some digital games services like Steam and GOG.com offer X-COM for sale with all the compatibility dirty work done for you.
