Okay, they're not retarded technically, but I imagine if Slater went to this game he'd be cackling with glee.

Last week Covenant, a private Christian school in Dallas, defeated Dallas Academy 100-0. Covenant was up 59-0 at halftime.

A parent who attended the game told The Associated Press that Covenant continued to make 3-pointers - even in the fourth quarter. She praised the Covenant players but said spectators and an assistant coach were cheering wildly as their team edged closer to 100 points.

"I think the bad judgment was in the full-court press and the 3-point shots,'' said Renee Peloza, whose daughter plays for Dallas Academy. "At some point, they should have backed off.''

Dallas Academy coach Jeremy Civello told The Dallas Morning News that the game turned into a "layup drill,'' with the opposing team's guards waiting to steal the ball and drive to the basket. Covenant scored 12 points in the fourth quarter and "finally eased up when they got to 100 with about four minutes left,'' he said.

Dallas Academy has eight girls on its varsity team and about 20 girls in its high school. It is winless over the last four seasons. The academy boasts of its small class sizes and specializes in teaching students struggling with "learning differences,'' such as short attention spans or dyslexia.

Hey, it's Texas. The losing team is lucky they weren't put down afterwards.

Yay high school sports.

I'm probably going out on a limb here, but if you go four years without a win and you lose a game by 100 points I think it's time to suspend the basketball program.

Or they could just turn it into dodgeball.

I'm picturing the most hilarious highlight reel ever. Set to Sweet Georgia Brown. Interspliced with sideline shots of a FURIOUS Nick Nolte from Blue Chips. "AH DOOT-DOOT-DOOT, DA-DOOHDOOH-DOOT DOOT, DOOOOH DOOT DAH DOO!" GODDAMMIT!

It isn't about winning though. From the article linked above:

I will grant, being scoreless isn't exactly a good thing. They should definitely revamp whom they play in the future.

Well, on the bright side, they only thought they lost 1-0.

Another layup.

Yeah, a matchup zone would have allowed them to conserve energy for those important fast-break points.

They just need some offensive rebounding. It's the second chance points that keep you in the game and get the crowd going.

I agree. I mean if a dog can be taught to play basketball, certainly a coach can teach a retard to make at least one point in a game. The coach is way overpaid... unless he's a volunteer coach or something, and then I'd investigate his real motives behind being around a bunch of teenage simpleton girls and not teaching them basic hand eye basket coordination. Maybe there was some ball handling off the court.

Kyle Queal, the headmaster for Covenant School, said in The Dallas Morning News online edition that he could not answer if the firing was a direct result of coach Micah Grimes' e-mail disagreeing with administrators who called the blowout ``shameful.''

Queal did not immediately answer phone messages or e-mail from The Associated Press.

On its Web site last week, Covenant, a private Christian school, posted a statement regretting the outcome of its Jan. 13 shutout win over Dallas Academy. ``It is shameful and an embarrassment that this happened. This clearly does not reflect a Christlike and honorable approach to competition,'' said the statement, signed by Queal and board chair Todd Doshier.
Grimes, who has been criticized for letting the game get so far out of hand, made it clear in the e-mail Sunday to the newspaper that he does not agree with his school's assessment.

``In response to the statement posted on The Covenant School Web site, I do not agree with the apology or the notion that the Covenant School girls basketball team should feel embarrassed or ashamed,'' Grimes wrote in the e-mail, according to the newspaper. ``We played the game as it was meant to be played. My values and my beliefs would not allow me to run up the score on any opponent, and it will not allow me to apologize for a wide-margin victory when my girls played with honor and integrity.''

Something similar happened while I was in high school. Because my school was about to shut down we were left with about 90 people for all three grades. So our baskeball team gets picked to play against a school with 300 students just in the senior grade and one of the best athletic programs in Greece. Out of their starting team 3 players were in the roster for the national team and a fourth got called the next year. In contrast in our team both the PG and the SF were on drugs. You could say we were a little outclassed. So by the time the score reached about 80-20 we did what any decent team would do in such a case. We started a fight and got the game stopped. But even for degenerates like our team you could see that the score stung. I figure it would be much worse for normal people.

The coach has been shitcanned for speaking out against the school.

Nice.

Last time I checked, Christians were supposed to be forgiving. I mean, that's what they preach after all.

hehe I'm reminded of an old UCB skit:

"Did you pray to Jesus on that?"
"Yeah! Jesus told me to take it to the hole!"

So the guy did his job and was fired because of it? What the hell are we teaching kids these days?
That it's okay to only beat the retards by 90?
If I was on the losing team in this game and the opponent was stealing the ball every trip up the floor because of a full court press, I think I'd just start letting them steal the ball.

With their face.

Or, as someone else I saw commented, just pass the ball to them as soon as you inbound it, and have your entire team cheer enthusiasticly when they score another layup. After awhile, it HAS to stop being fun for them, right?

Christ always goes hard to the hole or he doesn't go at all.

"Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain."

So yeah, Jesus says take it to the hole.
