Devin is an incredibly passionate individual, evidenced by his writing. Whether that's expressed through his opinions on film, his opinion of his profession and the frustrations it can bring or even when discussing things unrelated to film - from his trip to Ireland to his interests in books or music, that passion is right there on the table. You don't get the idea that he's holding back.
I've never met the guy in person, but I have only enjoyed his writing more and more - particularly his enthusiastic Tweets from this year's Sundance, which he has made seem like a truly banner year for a festival that has been fading in recent years. I can't even begin to describe how his reviews have affected my film-going.
To that, have I said horrible shit drunk that I'd never want online? Probably every time I've taken more than a couple of drinks. Ask anyone (by that, I mean, ask "Sean Bateman"). I'm a loudmouth drunk full of bullshit opinions and gossip.
Have I been that Johnny-on-the-Spot who put something out there on the wire when I should've been thinking not of how great it was to be King Of All Information, but of how this would reflect on my friend? Yes, not proud of any of that either - but always trying to get better about not being such a douchebag.
I've never read FirstShowing or met Alex Billington, but if he has readers, more power to them. If they want more from a film site, they'll eventually go elsewhere. What I think sucks is that anyone would think that this video would overshadow the great work Devin does every day and, especially, has done at this year's Sundance.
When this went up yesterday, I didn't watch it. Reading peoples' reactions was enough to know that I didn't really care to, though I knew there probably wouldn't be a frame in it that would change my opinion of the fellow.
