New episodes of Red Dwarf for Easter

The rumours last year seem to be true. This is great news - the last season was a return to form and it'd be great to see the old crew back together again.

I'm not really sure what the CHUD stance on RD was - but generally people seem to disregard it despite some fantastic concepts and frequently brilliant puns. The American pilot was awful though.

Anyone else looking forward to this as much as I am?

Watched Red Dwarf from its very first episode in the 80s to the very last episode - loved every minute of it. When it was bad it was mediocre, when it was good it was nothing short of brilliance.

This is nothing but very good news - hopefully the ratings will show how popular it stil is and will make a full comeback on BBC - God knows they need decent comedy nowadays - My Family? Jesus!

The Boys from the Dwarf are back.

It was good up until they brought in Kristine Cochanskl, then the series jumped the shark, still had it's moments though.

I stand reserved, although I was a hardcore fan during season 3 & 4, which I caught when they were originally broadcast. Those still remain my favourite scifi comedy productions alongside the Hitchhiker's Guide books (and Galaxy Quest). The scenario's were nothing short of brilliant, and the shoddy production value actually augmented the comedy.
But the series went off the rails fast in the 5th season, so much I never returned to give it another go to be honest. I've heard mixed reactions on season 7 & 8, which some consider a return to form somewhat.

7 was awful.

8 is literally one of the finest seasons of television ever put on air.

Good news about the two-parter. But the 'no holds bared' episode sounds a bit pointless. And odd.

Series 8 was actually pretty weak, from what I remember.

Apparently Norman Lovett isn't included because they couldn't afford him, which, combined with the fact the show is now being made for a small freeview channel, doesn't fill me with hope that we're in for a high quality production. But any finale is better then nothing I guess.

For me, it never got better than its first three seasons. Eight wasn't bad, but seven LITERALLY sucked smegging balls dry. I kind of liked how they left Rimmer.

First time I watched 8 I would have agreed with you - but the writing is so much sharper than before, Rimmer and Lister have some of their best chemistry going on and the puns are just sublime.

Also, high-cost does not indicate high-quality. I've always been impressed at what they managed to do with the budget they were given. The writing is the most important part - and Lovetts' absence is a shame - but there's no reason why they cant do it without him.

Wait, a season literally sucked balls dry? This I would rather not see.

Wasn't 7.2 the one with the cum-guzzling robot? Or am i thinking of a different show?

Bees, do you consider it's possible to view season 8 skipping 6 & 7 ? I'm actually curious now, but I'd rather not sit through six hours of awfulness or even lame mediocrity to get wise to the plot. I understand that s8 was also a kind of reboot of sorts?

You can skip season 6 & 7 very easily. As long as you know who's who, the plot is pretty much irrelevant.

It's really all about the puns and characters. Trust me, go into it with an open mind and forget all about season 7 - it's not shot on film like that one was, it's got a sense of humour and Kochanski's just the attractive butt of a few jokes instead of bringing the show down.

Rimmer absolutely shines in this season.

Just getting you back for misusing the word literally old boy

Oh, come on, Bees. It was intentional. I was hoping we could make it our "thing."

I thought we already had a "thing" and that we didn't discuss it on public forums?

This is awesome news. I'm with Stale Elvis; even at it's worst, I still found the show to be pretty enjoyable. I hadn't heard any of these rumors, so I wasn't even aware that they were talking about new episodes. The fact that we're actually getting them makes this all the better. Thanks, Bees.

Oh, smeg...

Some of my happiest convention memories are getting to meet the actors who played Kryten, Cat, and Lister. It was awsome following Craig Charles around the con as he picked up women and smoked cigarettes and guzzled beer on stage. Don't know if I still have my Red Dwarf smegmazines around anymore. Can't wait for this to come out. Oh to be young again and walk around cons wearing a holographic "H" on my forehead.

It's been so long that I've lost track, and honestly don't know whether I've seen season 8. Which was the one where they found themselves back on a fully-crewed Red Dwarf as prisoners? Because that was the last one I saw.

Seasons 1 & 2 are among my favorite British comedy ever. After that, despite the rising production values, it never quite recaptured the writing and performance of the early shows.

I think I will have to borrow some tapes from friends to catch up with the show. I haven't seen many episodes since the early 90's.
