If done correctly, a film adaption of "The Graveyard Book" could be an all-time classic.

This is great. I hope this leads to more Gaiman adaptations (Neverwhere!)

It's also just won The Newbery Medal, which is no small feat.

Neil Gaiman won the most prestigious writing award in American children's literature yesterday for a book that begins with a sinister triple knifing. But what his novel is really about, Gaiman said, is "community and the nature of family."
I may have to look into this.

It's well, well worth it.

By the way, I don't know if the title of the article was an allusion to it, but Gaiman read aloud the entire book over the course of his U.S. book tour, a chapter at a time. Really fun.

It's a cute book, but count me a little bummed that this won't be stop-motion. Would have loved to see Selick's take on the ghoul city.

Wow. I'd buy that.

If they were going to do this live-action, then Jordan's actually a really good choice of director, and I've been wanting to see him do more fantasy for quite some time now.
Company has a few flaws, but it's visually exceptional. I could see the same misty, haunted ambience tranferring across very, very well.

I hadn't considered Selick for this, but that's a great choice. I was all excited about Jordan, but now I kind of want that, too.

I really liked Graveyard Book (got a definite Ray Bradbury vibe from chunks of it) and I was amped it won the Newberry. The film has a lot of potential (especially in the casting; I'd love to see an all-star team of British character actors for the occupants of the cemetary) but it also has plenty of places where it could go wrong, starting with the structure. Like Jungle Book, there's a storyline weaving throughout but most of the chapters are relatively self-contained, almost like a collection of short stories. It's one of the charms of the book and is part of what makes it a good read. But the storyline that Gaiman keeps coming back to is kind of predictable, even if it ends well.

But yeah, done right, this could be very very good.
