Deftones - Eros

Deftones' new album, Eros, was listed as scheduled to drop in summer of '08. It's January of '09, and there's no release date that I'm aware of anymore.

I assume that some/much of this has to do with the fact that their bassist, Chi, is in a coma - and doesn't seem inclined (at this point) to pull out of it.

Despite this morbid turn of events, I'm actively excited for the new music. Saturday Night Wrist, their last album, felt like a creative explosion after the overall treading-water feel of the eponymous "Deftones" album that came before it.

Anyone else anticipating this one? Got any notions of when its likely to be unleashed?

Despite treading a lot of water (seriously, Needles and Pins is basically a My Own Summer remix), I did like the self-titled. Saturday Night Wrist is a whole other story, though.

I'm still curious how this new one turns out, but those YouTubes that were floating around a few months back of Melanie played live don't inspire hope.

I haven't liked any of their output since White Pony(which I really love), but I'll give this a listen. Was the album completed?

They kind of suck live though(in my experience), so is that the best indicator?

It's not that I didn't enjoy the self-titled album. It's solid in it's way ("Minerva" still gets play on my iPod), but there's a noticable feeling of been-there-done-that, where, with SNW, I was legitimately impressed by a good 85% of the material.

I haven't heard the live clips of "Melanie." Intentionally. Deftones strike me as a studio band, ala TVOTR, in that much of what I find appealing about their sound probably won't translate (as) effectively to live performance. I've never caught them live though, so I don't know if that's legitimate or not.

I'm a huge Deftones fan and can't wait for the new album to drop. I wasn't that into Saturday Night Wrist. I didn't hate it but it's my least favorite album. "Deftones" is actually my favorite. Great lyrics and hard sounds plus it has my favorite Deftones tune, "Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event".

Last I heard, they stayed with Chi about two weeks, then went right back to the studio. So, I guess they're still working on it.

I've seen them three times live. First time, they sucked, second time, they were fucking great, third time, they were just okay, but they played a lot of B-Sides I didn't expect. So, inconsistent's a better term than flat out suck.

Actually, I'd argue that album gets better the further you go. Past When Girls Telephone Boys, it's pretty much all uphill.

I love everything they've done since Adrenaline, which is basically to say, everything. For me, Adrenaline and Around the Fur are a little spotty (not much), but after that, I love it all.

Can't wait for Eros (though I must admit, didn't even know that was coming).

Their last two albums have been filled with below average to slightly above average songs for about 90% of the albums. The good news about Eros is they supposedly grew closer as band, compared to the past five or so years, and instead of sending each other shit and piecing it all together, they actually wrote and recorded the majority of it together. But Chino can be full of shit. He always pimps their unheard music up to be their craziest and heaviest shit to date, only two say two years later what a horrible experience it was recording the songs but how their new stuff is awesome.
