Mail days may need to be cut. Wonderful.

Not exactly political but within that realm. Pretty insane regardless. I never thought I'd live to see the day when mail delivery got altered because of the economy.

I blame UPS.

So we lose Saturday delivery. Big deal.

What he said.

What they really need to do is eliminate or scale back bulk mail discounts, or whatever else necessary, to cut down on the massive amount of wasteful junk mail clogging up our system.
You guys get Saturday delivery? Fuck man we only get Monday to Friday!
Australia sucks!
I've heard it's the junk mail that keeps the post office running.

As for cutting Saturday? Only regret will be not getting Netflix in on that day.

Really? I've been to Sydney and found it to be awesome. Probably living there would be a different story. But enough of this here derail.
I was kidding. Australia is the best. Melbourne is slightly better than Sydney. We get friggen junk mail on Saturday, that's all.

They're only $2.9 Billion in the red? That's nothing. Just add a new line item to the stimulus package. Give 'em $10 billion. Hell give 'em $20 billion. A FERRARI FOR EVERY MAILMAN! HOORAY!!!

EdHocken speaks truth. I need my Saturday night movie.
Oh, noes. My free Entertainment Weekly might have to wait until Monday!

Obama is right; we all have to sacrifice.

Damn straight, if the Republicans had thought of this they wouldn't look like such jackasses and fuckheads.
Saturday night movies may endure, the article mentions that Tuesday might be the day to get skipped.
Apparantly...The least prioritized day to deliver mail, as there is less of it, is...Tuesday, as a result...Saturday delivery will very likely continue unfettered...So Ratty you do not have to sacrifice...Entertainment Weakly, and you Sammy Jankis, do not have to lose your Netflix either.

Same up here. I don't see the big deal of losing a day...

I like how the guy who used to live in my apartment still gets more mail than I do, and he's been gone for four months now.

I have the same problem. If only I could steal his identity and use his AARP benefits.

Duke Fleed...I think its awesome you are familiar with mail route volumes on a day-by-day basis.

Not Tuesday. I like getting my Netflix movie on the day the new release streets. I will make Thursday my no mail day.

What, we can't choose?
I suppose postage will go up again.
People still use mail?
1) Who writes letter anymore?

2) Who doesn't use FedEx or UPS for packages or priority mail?

3) That junk mail I get every Tuesday is probably the biggest revenue generator for the US Postal service

4) That and magazines

5) Both of which are bulk rate services. Otherwise how could I get the frickin PennySaver?
I'd imagine that people who rely on the mail to bring them things like checks might care about this.

I sent out about a dozen letters last week to various "junk mail" listings to reduce junk mail.

Most of these places will not respond to removal requests except by snail mail.
As long as the post office stays open for those 4 hours on Saturday, so I can pick up all the shit they wouldn't leave on my porch during the week.
It's not a matter of junk mail-- at least they get paid something to ship that. Their problem is that not enough people are sending letters or using their priority shipping methods for packages. Mail volume is dropping, and has been each year recently. Mix rising fuel costs with less postage being sold, and you have a deficit.

Also, yes, there's another rate hike coming. May, I think. 44 cent stamps.
What will become of those postal workers doing nothing while the line at the Post office gets longer and longer?

That information is readily available to anyone who, oh I don't know, read the linked article.

Not to mention anyone who has a friend or relative in jail they like to actually communicate with. There's still plenty of good reasons to send letters.
Or people who get prescriptions by mail. Really, this will not be fun for the elderly and/or poor, or plain old Luddites.

My mother in law, who is only in her early sixties, refuses to do anything financial online. All of her bills, statements, and yes, prescriptions still come by mail.
It's one day. Unless every single one of these people was receiving every single one of these deliveries on Tuesday, the chances are slight that this will have a major impact on them. Besides, the article says they're just looking at suspending delivery on one day. That doesn't necessarily mean mail still won't be processed and moved between post offices, it just means they won't be delivering it out to addresses.

Apparently the previous occupants in my unit had a kid that had severe mental issues. A neighbor told me one time the cops came because the kid was threatening the parents. I get brochures and letters all the time for special camps for the kid.

I'm surprised it's taking this long to change mail to five day delivery. Most of the world is on five day delivery, and they get along alright. I barely check my mail once a week for Netflix packages and my water bill at the end of the month. Even if you use the mail for all your billing and medicine, etc. one day shouldn't make a difference.

Or picking it up from addresses. And it isn't one day, it's two days. Mail delivery is light on Tuesday because nobody mails anything on Sundays. I don't know about you, but I don't get jack on Tuesdays. People do, however, send outgoing mail on Tuesdays - by cutting Tuesday pickup off, they'd also turn Thursday into a dead mail day, meaning checks, prescriptions, and so forth would wouldn't arrive until Friday.
Assuming every single prescription and check is mailed on Tuesday right now. I'm sure whoever mails these out will adjust their schedules accordingly. It's not like Social Security is sitting there wringing their hands and cackling about senior citizens getting their checks late.
It effectively deads out two days. Agencies might be able to account for this, but certainly not always.
Wow, you're really determined to make this a big deal. From the way some of you are talking, it's like they're closing the Postal Service altogether. Mail will still exist, everybody. The fatalities from old people not getting their medicine will be quite low.
As it has already been pointed out; Australia and Canada only have 5 Mail Days. I don't know about the canucks but thus far we have survived.
Seriously do you guys get anything in the mail other than bills and court summons these days? I would have thought the extra days grace would be a blessing.

As you can tell by my two posts, I'm totally freaking out.

Ever since I signed up for Amazon Prime I couldn't give a shit about the regular mail. On Tuesday, I was to receive a package that was sent registered mail from England. So of course they didn't leave it and I had to go to the post office the next day to pick it up. It was by far the most inefficient place I'd ever been in. I waited about half an hour with 5 people in front of me at the start to finally get to a teller. Fuck the post office.

I wonder how many tens of thousands of postal employees are going to have their pay cut by a 6th.

Well, yeah. I get that. Just like the tens of thousands of other folks losing their jobs this month, less pay out there isn't a good thing, whatever the reasons for it.

Less pay when it coincides with a proportionate decrease in work load, can be tough from a budgeting standpoint, but maybe the workers uses the utility of extra time to enjoy their lives more, start a second career, obtain additional education ... who knows.

It's when wages are slashed and job duties increase, or stay the same, that the real gnashing of teeth should begin.

Are you allowed to pick your mail up anywhere else? In Canada there's a national pharmacy chain that also provides limited postal office services. Very, very convenient. You can even buy money orders there!

Isn't Canada great?

Not really, no. It's very cold and the entire country feels like you've been transported to some sort of bizarre world where everyone and everything is actually a really bad dinner theater show.
That made so little sense that I can't imagine anybody being offended by it. What the hell?

Plus, you live in Louisiana.
I'm conflicted about this. While I rarely mail out anything I get zillions of bills and junk mail every day. Taking out one mail day may result in me getting so much mail in won't fit in my mailbox.
