Sarah Palin to resign her office in a few weeks.

Quote:
There was no immediate word as to why she will resign, though speculation has been rampant that the former vice presidential candidate is gearing up for a run at the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.
Christ. Let the joke be over.
Bush ran for reelection in Texas in 98 before running in 2000.

Why wouldn't Palin want to win an easy 2010 election in order to boost her claim of being electible in 2012?

BTW: To paraphrase Basketball, Palin is such a "flopper" when it comes to the press.
Because she can't. My immediate reaction is that this is a move of desperation. She can't run for national office if her AK numbers suck. And they have to be dropping from all the bad press she's been getting. At this rate, she might not even win re-election.

Do it for Trig, Sarah. Do it for liberals like me. Do it for the lulz.

We should all chip in and buy her some Yankees tickets.

If only SNL was on the air to lampoon the giant run-on sentence that is Palin's resignation speech.
Is it possible she might run for the Senate first? Quitting seems like a bad way to kick off a Presidential bid.

Romney vs Palin is going to be a bore. I'll bet a dark horse takes the Repub ticket. And if the economy is still bad by the next election you never know.

According to Andrea Mitchell on CNN, sources close to Palin say she is "out of politics for good."

Hoo boy, something big must be coming down the pike.
I'm guessing a sex tape.

That would probably win her the election.

Or she's going to "retire to spare her family from the vicious media" for a couple of years. Then called back to service to save america in 2012.

Placing my bet on something to do with the entertainment industry. But please don't be the Palin reality show.
For more enterprising souls than I: the transcript of Palin's resignation speech.
Scroll down for the video. You have to see it and then imagine the Tina Fey version. That makes it go down a lot more smoothly.

True, but the sad thing is that it will probably work.

Oh, this thing is a riot:

Quote:

And one chooses how to react to circumstances. You can choose to engage in things that tear down, or build up. I choose to work very hard on a path for fruitfulness and productivity. I choose NOT to tear down and waste precious time; but to build UP this state and our country, and her industrious, generous, patriotic, free people!
By quitting!!!
She used the retarded child card! Awesome!

That was a weird-ass speech.
Definitely smacked of "I did good things and people have been mean to me, so please pay no attention to the terrible thing that's coming".

Fixed!

NPR speculates that all the Ethics charges against her proved to be so distracting that Palin felt she was in a no win situation: could get any work done, could only look bad in the public eye whether or not the she was exonerated etc.

I suspect she feels persecuted and didn't want to be an even bigger joke in 2012 than she was in 2008. I also wonder if someone in the GOP quietly told her that if she runs in 2012 something else was sure to come out.

I like MSNBC's answer-money. Her family doesn't have alot and she can make a ton with speeches and appearences now. She got addicted to being a celibrity and she can't do that in Alaska while being Gov..

I hope she has a reality show. I hope there is a sex tape. I welcome her into the celebrity arena if it keeps her away from the political one.
A lot of Freepers are of the opinion that this is in preparation to barnstorm during the midterm elections to get Republicans elected and take back Congress. Their optimism is charming in its naivete.

. . . unless you want an abortion. Or if you want to marry your same-sex partner.

Prediction: She'll have her own show on FOX News by Halloween. She'll scum up the airwaves further, but will never sully the political landscape again.

Do you hear me, God? Just this once, please?

Holy Shit! Did you watch that video?

<Couldn't someone shut that baby up?

<Liked her tribute to "Diana" in the original V mini-series (the red outfit)

<God created Oil so we can drill for it!

<She rushed through her speech like she had a laser sight focused on her forehead

<I think she's quitting to go to the Loony Bin

<Alaska has Ducks!

<And remember, only Dead Fish "Go with the Flow!"

Oooh, she's gonna be mad at me!

Hope the baby is black!

I did get a weird vibe from that speech that this decision was not entirely voluntary

There was definitely an air of trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear to it.

Definitely a weird speech. Very rushed, which I think is what gives it that air of anxiety or desperation. Like many of you I hope, for entertainment value, that this is all to preempt something really damaging coming out, and for the sake of the country, that it signifies the end her political career and that at most she goes on to become a TV personality; that I can tolerate, "President Palin" I cannot.
Following this speech was just as fruitless as trying to follow the logic of the new Transformers movie.....

Now, isn't the problem that for her, ideally "this state" and "our country" are both referring to Alaska?

And is William Seward really seen as an Alaskan Jebediah Springfield? Invoking him in 2009 makes it seem like everyone in the state has a portait of Seward on their mantles. I wonder if folks living on islands loaded with bat shit (and Hemingway's brother!) also feel this way.

"The world needs more Trigs."

Yes, fantastic idea, Sarah. Transformers 2 wasn't making enough money as it stands.

Aaaaand it's currently looking like it may be an embezzelling scandal that's about to errupt.

an embezzlement scandal isn't good enough. I demand a swinger sex tape.
I bet everytime something like this happens on a Friday or Thursday night, especially on one before they're on a week-long holiday, Jon Stewart and Colbert must cuss up a storm.
She can kiss 2012 goodbye. You can just see the "Do you want a President who will fold when the pressure and the going gets tough" ads now.

I doubt she's going to run anyway. If she was dumping it for presidential means, they'd have done it at a better time than on the Friday afternoon of a holiday weekend dominated by coverage of a dead celebrity.
Yeah, this is damage control, pure and simple. Leaving the barn after the horse has gotten out.
You guys are probably right that there is another shoe yet to drop, simply because this makes no sense from a political viewpoint.
I could almost give the "She is Doing it to make the big bucks while she is still a hot commodity" theory credence, but that would show more judgement then she has shown in a long time.

It would also mean she's voluntarily giving up power -- something she does not do.

Hmm, right out of the Ted Stevens play book.
I'm watching part of her resignation speech...This chick's a fucking mess. She's absolutely nuts. It's like Nixon all over again...Only without the speaking skills.
Damn. Of course I enjoy how this, much like anything could be spun:

Quote:
"Her delivery was incredible. If you're a less charismatic person, you probably couldn't pull it off," Matalin said. "[Now] she will be freed up and liberated the way Mitt Romney is to raise money and get political chips by spending it and getting political capital. And she is still raising the kinds of crowds and money she always did."

Now, Matalin says, Palin must focus on "putting up with the conventional wisdom" that this was a bad move and travel the country to drum up support for a presidential run.

"She takes that target off her back with a good record to launch from," Matalin said.
How was this said with a straight face?

I could see how it speaks to a major criticism of right wingers and their party to a great degree, by extension. Deluded. It's probably one of their most dangerous qualities.
So I've read that this is:

1. A prelude to a run for the Presidency in 2012
2. A prelude to a run for Congress in 2010
3. A prelude to stumping through Congressional districts to help Republicans win back seats in 2010
4. The beginning of an effort to launch a third political party
5. Damage control

Only #3 and #5 make any sense to me.
Ed Rollins more or less said on CNN That
A. This was the dumbest thing that Palin had done yet and
B. Mary Maitlin is full of it.
Meanwhile MSNBC is showing us another wonderful round of five year old prison documentaries.
Sorry, but MSNBC is NEVER going to really compete with CNN and FOX until they stop this shutting down for the weekend and Holidays shit. I am amazed that Keith Olbermann is not screaming to high heaven about this. It makes him look like he is stuck with a cut rate outfit.

Some of the actual speech as written (punctuation and grammar hers)......

Quote:
Hi Alaska, I appreciate speaking directly TO you, the people I serve, as your Governor.

People who know me know that besides faith and family, nothing's more important to me than our beloved Alaska. Serving her people is the greatest honor I could imagine.

I want Alaskans to grasp what can be in store for our state. We were purchased as a territory because a member of President Abe Lincoln's cabinet, William Seward, providentially saw in this great land, vast riches, beauty, strategic placement on the globe, and opportunity. He boldly looked "North to the Future". But he endured such ridicule and mocking for his vision for Alaska, remember the adversaries scoffed, calling this "Seward's Folly". Seward withstood such disdain as he chose the uncomfortable, unconventional, but RIGHT path to secure Alaska, so Alaska could help secure the United States.

People who know me know that besides faith and family, nothing's more important to me than our beloved Alaska.

Alaska's mission - to contribute to America. We're strategic IN the world as the air crossroads OF the world, as a gatekeeper of the continent. Bold visionaries knew this - Alaska would be part of America's great destiny.

Our destiny to be reached by responsibly developing our natural resources. This land, blessed with clean air, water, wildlife, minerals, AND oil and gas. It's energy! God gave us energy.
And so on and so forth. This is really how she wrote the speech. Punctuation and everything....
