Zodiac

Disclaimer: I tried to find a thread about this on the boards & couldn't. Move it if needed (I know, like you need my permission ).

I picked this up recently at Wal-Mart for $5 (Wal-Mart has earned some temporary goodwill as a result). I saw it for the first time last year when I rented it, but I was studying when I put it on the TV so I didn't pay it that much mind.

This time, though...wow. This thing got under my fucking skin. There's little flashy delivery in the technical sense (which is probably what turned off people who wanted to see Seven/Fight Club 2.0), it's just a perfectly woven detective story with flawless acting by every single cast member, especially Ruffalo, Gyllenhaal (turned me into a true believer with this movie) Downey-fucking-Junior, Edwards, & the guy who played Arthur Leigh Allen.

The scene when the cops go to question Allen at his job is a jaw-dropper. This scene in particular really embodies what makes this movie so riveting. The tension, the way Allen keeps the cops jumping from one foot to the next as he finds his footing after being blindsided...and holy christ is that guy's performance chilling as his voice drops deeper & deeper, sounding more & more like the Zodiac as it goes on. It's slow, perfect tension building, as good as any that I can remember seeing in years. The only scene that even comes close is when Robert finally makes good & looks Allen in the eyes, & their eyes/facial expressions say absolutely everything. I can imagine that a lot of people probably thought that it was anticlimactic, but I thought that it couldn't have been any better. Robert stares him in the face, & Allen knows that he's been outdone. Perfect.

Ok that's all I have for now because I know I'm skipping a lot of stuff, but it could take all day to talk about everything that makes this movie so good. It's not quite like anything that Fincher has done before & as I keep watching it, I'm becoming more convinced that this is his best work to date. What a crime that it slipped under the radar. I love this movie, it's fantastic.

Oh yeah, the music was also excellent. Especially when Avery & Robert are at the bar, discussing the case while "Bernadette" by the Four Tops plays over the speakers. Fuckin' right.

Wow, I had no idea. That may have to be my first official Blu-Ray purchase.

It's the same as the Director's Cut DVD, which is quite expansive. Pretty loaded disc.

Allen is played by John Carrol Lynch, who is best known for playing Drew Carey's brother on his sitcom. Which is a shame, because the guy fucking rocks.

I think I've seen this movie fifteen times now.

I haven't seen it that many times, but I know what you mean. It's pretty goddamn great.

I have the fantastic HDDVD of this. Then Blu-ray won the HD War. Sadness. Hahahaha.

I think I still prefer this over No Country and There Will Be Blood.

I think he's going to have a slightly higher profile now as the fucking hysterical barber in Gran Torino.

Picked up the Zodiac Blu Ray a few days ago, and even compared to the usual reference discs often mentioned, this sucker has easily the best picture quality I've seen yet on the format. Makes me want BD's for Seven and The Game, like, now.

Anyway, fantastic movie all around - Fincher's pacing is simply impeccable, and regardless of how often I watch it, I get sucked in every time.

I think it is a crime that Benjamin Fucking Button is getting more awards recognition than this film.

He'll always be Norm "Sonofa" Gundersson from Fargo for me.

I totally agree. Having grown up in the Bay Area during the real Zodiac's "career" himself, Fincher's love of the material and obsession to detail is evident in every frame. I wouldn't call Fincher a passionate filmmaker but of all his films, I find that ZODIAC is the one his heart is most engaged in. It also displays a maturity and sophistication in Fincher's style and approach that should have received far more recognition.

BENJAMIN BUTTON, on the other hand, is desperate Oscar bait. It's Fincher's THE COLOR PURPLE.

Has anyone watched the main doc on the blu ray yet? I only ask because our picture would cut out at random points to just a black screen when people were talking and then come right back. That's not normal right?

That's a stylistic decision. Takes some getting used to, but I liked it ultimately.

Fuck this paragraph!

Ah. Ok. It just seemed so fucking random. And some of those people shouldn't be in HD. Specifically the lady who was the phone operator during the killing on the 4th of July.

Truer words were seldom spoken. Despite its admirable display of technical mastery Button just screams that it's just calculated Oscar-bait. As a work of art Zodiac is the far better film. Although congratulations on Fincher for pulling it off.

I'm sure Paramount is hoping it doesn't follow all the way through on that comparison.
