Disclaimer: I tried to find a thread about this on the boards & couldn't. Move it if needed (I know, like you need my permission

I picked this up recently at Wal-Mart for $5 (Wal-Mart has earned some temporary goodwill as a result). I saw it for the first time last year when I rented it, but I was studying when I put it on the TV so I didn't pay it that much mind.
This time, though...wow. This thing got under my fucking skin. There's little flashy delivery in the technical sense (which is probably what turned off people who wanted to see Seven/Fight Club 2.0), it's just a perfectly woven detective story with flawless acting by every single cast member, especially Ruffalo, Gyllenhaal (turned me into a true believer with this movie) Downey-fucking-Junior, Edwards, & the guy who played Arthur Leigh Allen.
The scene when the cops go to question Allen at his job is a jaw-dropper. This scene in particular really embodies what makes this movie so riveting. The tension, the way Allen keeps the cops jumping from one foot to the next as he finds his footing after being blindsided...and holy christ is that guy's performance chilling as his voice drops deeper & deeper, sounding more & more like the Zodiac as it goes on. It's slow, perfect tension building, as good as any that I can remember seeing in years. The only scene that even comes close is when Robert finally makes good & looks Allen in the eyes, & their eyes/facial expressions say absolutely everything. I can imagine that a lot of people probably thought that it was anticlimactic, but I thought that it couldn't have been any better. Robert stares him in the face, & Allen knows that he's been outdone. Perfect.
Ok that's all I have for now because I know I'm skipping a lot of stuff, but it could take all day to talk about everything that makes this movie so good. It's not quite like anything that Fincher has done before & as I keep watching it, I'm becoming more convinced that this is his best work to date. What a crime that it slipped under the radar. I love this movie, it's fantastic.
Oh yeah, the music was also excellent. Especially when Avery & Robert are at the bar, discussing the case while "Bernadette" by the Four Tops plays over the speakers. Fuckin' right.
