AMC Best Picture Marathon - Texas Chewers

I figured best to dig this out of the Alamo Drafthouse thread.

AMC Oscar Showcase

All Texas Chewers! This year we would like to continue what we started last year with a Chewer get together in Houston to watch all the best picture nominees. Tickets can be purchased at the above link, but please wait for theater locations to be announced and agreed upon prior to buying.

We will plan on taking a break during the day (hopefully The Reader is the middle film) and going to Chuy's or another restaurant close by. After the marathon if enough are up for it we can go have a beer and some food together. If the theater is the same location as last year I am thinking Cecil's on West Gray as a good location for our group. Houstonian Chewers feel free to chime in with ideas. If you do not live in Houston Jared Melton can help arrange hotel rooms at a discount.

The lineup this year isn't the best, but if we can get enough Chewers together we'll definitely have a good time. Feel free to invite wives, girlfriends, and other movie geek buddies along as well. If you have any interest in attending please reply, so we can get an idea how this might fill out.

Theaters have been announced. Three locations in Houston, but the one we went to last year is the most central location.

AMC Studio 30
2949 Dunvale , Dunvale and Westheimer
Houston, TX 77063

I'm holding off on buying my ticket for a week or two, in order to see how many we get in.

The Reader is our 1:05PM film, which makes for a perfect chance to break for lunch. Frost/Nixon is the last film, starting at 9:45PM. I personally have no desire to see that movie, so if the group decides on that, we can ditch early for drinks and hanging out. I'm open to seeing it as well, I'll go with the flow.

So again, all Texas Chewers are invited! Please sign up!

Really wish I could make it this year. Had a blast with you guys last year. Maybe financials will be a little more solid next year!

You know I'm in, gentlemen. Second the exit during the Reader; however, I've not seen Frost/Nixon and want to, so if we could maybe not leave before that one, that'd be greeeeaaat.

Drinks and schmoozing it up afterward = one helluva plan.

Hopefully, this is a direct link to the AMC Studio 30's purchase page.

Also, Greg -- this might be a direct link to the AMC Barton Creek's purchase page. Yes, they're showing it in Austin this year.

Girl and I just talked it over, it looks like we'll be making it, provided we can justify it financially. She's definitely interested, and I'm only not going if I absolutely can't, so hey.

Unfortunately you are very correct about the lineup not being the best. However, this sounds like a great opportunity to meet some Chewers. Put me on the maybe list, please.

When does everyone think they can be sure they're coming or not? It's a week off, and I'd like us to be able to set up a time to meet and all that early next week, swap numbers and all.

I'd love to join in with you guys if I wasn't 4 hours away in Irving.

It looks like I am going to miss out on this event. My best friend's birthday is Friday, and we're doing it up pretty big for him. There's no way in hell I can be out until 4AM, then head to the movies all day long. If anyone wants to get together Friday night though, let me know. We're going to hit a couple of bars probably in West U and the Heights.

I think this means that I'm the only one still going.

I went to the one here in New Orleans (well actually in the 'burbs, but kind of appropriate since the theater is in the area where a lot of production work is down).

Pretty good time. They found some extra Benjamin Button posters so I got one of Brad and One of Cate, so excited I have posters from a flick I worked on.

The Reader had my wife and I scratching our heads. How did that one get nominated? Just a mediocre film and nothing you would remember later and really kind of a mess. I wonder how much was left on the cutting room floor?

During Frost/Nixon the film literally melted. I have never seen that happen before. About an hour in it just melts. Kind of cool in a way. They got a new print up and running pretty fast though.

All in all a good time. Pretty decent crowd for New Orleans on the Saturday before Mardi Gras and with Endymion rolling in the city (Endymion is one of the three super Krewes).

That is exactly what happened to There Will Be Blood last year in Houston.

...coincidence?

There Will Be Blood was beautifully timed though. "I'm your brother, Daniel...from another mother."

*film melts*
