V-Day is coming up. List em.

Knowing my wife, 'The Notebook'.
Before Sunrise.
My wife laughs at The Notebook. That's why she's my wife.

Our last Valentine movies were: American Psycho, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Shortbus and Cecil B. Demented.

This year? The Thing.

Amelie.
If she's in THAT kind of mood, she digs 'The Notebook'. Most of the time, she wants to watch an Eastwood movie. No lie, her favorite movie of all time is 'Two Mules for Sister Sara'.

Maybe we'll do a marathon of the Man with No Name trilogy this year.

Favorite story: my mom telling me about a date of hers taking her to see Deliverance in the theater.

I've always wondered what it would have been like to have that guy for a dad.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
The Fountain.

It's all about the inevitability and endurance of love.

Somewhere In Time

A Little Romance

Benny & June

The Unbearable Lightness of Being

Christmas In July

Addicted To Love

Down With Love

Splendor In The Grass

It Happened One Night

Smokey & The Bandit
Honestly, I have never been done wrong by Shaun of the Dead. Every time I've used it as a date night movie it worked like gangbusters. Benny & June is a great recommendation too. I think Forgetting Sarah Marshall might become a popular choice.

Eternal Sunshine I use as the "I'm single and miserable" Valentine's choice. A good list is what are the anti-Valentine's Day movies?
So far, watching Once has gotten me some wifely love three times.
I would second Once and also True Romance.
Two Lovers comes out in the movie theaters on Feb 13th. Even better is the fact that HDNET will be showing a preview of the movie next month too.

Save the $20 on the movies and DVR it at home and watch it for free!

Rikki Oh. Or Once.
I'm surprised no one's mentioned IRREVERSIBLE yet.

As for me, I'm probably not watching a movie on Valentine's Day with my special lady friend. That would eat up two hours of valuable boom-boom time.

But if I did, I would most certainly go with OUT OF SIGHT.
Soon Let the Right One In will come to home video and eliminate the need for all these others.
Once, really.

Lars and the Real Girl
My gf is a huge Amelie fan, so I suspect I'll be seeing that again for V-Day.

I'd also throw in What's Up, Doc?, While You Were Sleeping and Untamed Heart.

Red Dawn, Conan the Barbarian, Thin Red Line, 2001, Memento, and, of course, Oldboy (which is probably the best choice).

Roxanne.

Told a friend of mine that it was essential to take a girl he's seeing to Slumdog Millionaire, and that if he doesn't, he's a fucking idiot; I stand by that (by the by, he probably won't).

Though it's obviously unpopular around these parts, Napolean Dynamite is a date movie, there's really no two ways about it.

Well, if you're actually trying to win her over as opposed to testing her endurance.
'Oldboy' would be a great LAST date movie.
I wonder if any couples walked out of Date Movie satisfied.
I don't think anyone who watched Date Movie was satisified.

Hmm .. maybe you're right. Best to stick with Thin Red Line.
2001: A Space Odyssey.
My old flatmate assured me it was '9 1/2 Weeks'...but he was a royal asshole.
Always carried a case containing the VHS, a toothbrush, and some clean undies to every date he went on.
Claimed it worked 4 times out of 5.

Douche.

'Ghost'. Back in college, this movie was cinematic panty remover.
The Apartment.
If your girl has good taste, any good movie is a good date movie. Me and my girl had a wonderful time cuddling and watching Salo: 120 Days of Sodom.
That's not a girl, Patrick. That's a wife.
Maybe Secretary.
The Private life of Angel Dark.

Eternal Sunshine...

Down With Love.

Down With Love.

Down With Love.

As a female, I say unto you, Down With Love.
Down With Love is a ton of fun. I remember taking a date to see that in theatres; it turned out to be a rather pleasant night. Sugary enough for the girls, and full of enough cinematic invention to keep a movie buff engaged. Plus, Ewan rocks.

This. My wife isn't the film freak that I am, but she appreciates good cinema, and she's never been into "the chick flick". Rewatching Blade Runner or Pan's Labyrinth is more likely to appeal to her than anything with Julia Roberts.

On top of which, we don't do Valentine's Day. When we need a culturally-mandated date to instruct us to celebrate our relationship, it'll be just about time to call it quits.

Pee-wee's Big Adventure.

If you are actively not celebrating it... that is kind of like celebrating it, no? You probably spend just as much thought about not celebrating as many do about celebrating it, but you probably have less fun.

Back to topic. Let The Right One In finally open near us in early February, so I think we have a winner!

We don't normally go out to movies, though, on Valentine's day. Typically, one of us prepares a nice dinner and we just stay home... but now that we have a daughter, we thought calling in a babysitter and going out to see Let The Right One In seemed like the better idea perhaps.

Also, my wife and I would completely disagree on Slumdog Millionairre as a date movie, but I know we are in the minority. The ending was not enough to make me feel very hopeful or uplifted. I believe my wife said it was like being tortured for weeks and then given a piece of candy. Looking at the main thread for Slumdog, though, I definitely realize we are in the minority. (I did really like the movie, though.)

Another date movie suggestion (from my wife):
Alien vs. Predator

Well, as long as they celebrate the love (nub nub!) throughout the year as they see fit, I think Greg's is a great way to avoid all the hassle of trying to get Valentine's Day products with all the other guys trying to rush something together.

Stop being like everyone else! Hahaha.

EDIT: Oh... date movie. Uh, My Sassy Girl?
How could I forget The Cutting Edge and Pillow Talk! Also, Rambo IV.

Yes. We don't celebrate Valentine's day for the same reason I don't go shopping the day after Thanksgiving: everybody's doing that. I hate mobs. There's no way in hell I'm setting foot in a restaurant on the same night as every other schmuck in the country. We can wait a week and go when we don't have to wait half an hour for a table.
Yeah. I didn't get anyone anything for Christmas for this reason. With the snow and the mobs, I'm just gonna give people extra-awesome birthday presents.

I agree with the valentines sentiment to a degree - we're having it a week early this year to avoid the price-hiking and hassle entailed in booking time away. It's amazing how many people simply can't celebrate it at any other time.
I keep my Christmas tree up until February, and celebrate Valentine's in May. Rebel, rebel.

I can't believe no one mentioned An Officer and a Gentleman. Gere!!!
