One quick TCM question

Ok...I was rewatching the original TCM last night and one quick question popped into my head at the end. Ok, the black truck driver who helps Sally into the truck but then they go out again...why didn't they just jump in and slam on the gas and get outta there. It was kinda strange how they just ran away when they had a big truck at their disposel(sp?). But, I gotta hand it to him, he did get a good knock on the head to old Leatherface.

I've been asking this question for years and still have yet to get an answer. It's a pretty dumb question, but I just need to know. What happened to the truck driver? Did leatherface run him down and chop him up? Did he run right off the set? I found it quite insulting that Sally would just leave him to die after he willingly saved her, eh but it's just a movie.

Oh yeah sorry I forgot to answer your question.

SPOILER ALERT...maybe..

From what I understand they wouldn't have had time to drive off. Leatherface could have opened the door while he was shifting gear(?) and yanked him right out of the truck, or well he could have just jumped inside and steered the truck off the road. Anyway it never happened, he just sawed the side of the door, maybe the truck driver was afraid he'd saw right through it, who knows. He problay could have driven off, but it would have been a dumb ending, even though it does end similar to that. Also it was nice to see leatherface get hit with a wrench and cut his leg with his own weapon, the blood showed that he was indeed human and could die just like anyone else.

Too little time and scared out of his wits has always been my personal explanation for why the truck driver doesn't try to hightail it out of there. Remember he's just run a man down, he jumps out of the truck to see how bad things are and a screaming girl covered in blood comes running up to him begging for help with a giant fat man wearing a mask made of human skin and brandishing a chainsaw chasing after her. He and the girl get in truck's cab and close the door just before the chainsaw can reach them. Leatherface is cutting away at a door with its window rolled down. I might panic and run too. I'll say this for the truck driver, he sure can through a mean monkey wrench. The reason I think he didn't jump in the pickup bed along with the girl was because he was already running like a scared motherfucker and had already passed by when the truck came along and U turned. I do wonder what ever became of him. He looked to be a good forty pounds overweight and wasn't much of a runner, but Leatherface had a nasty cut on his upper thigh so that should have helped to even things out. I imagine he got away.
