I completely agree that "cocksucker" doesn't always, or even usually, have a homophobic connotation.
But you guys have been talking about the importance of context (which I agree is important), so let's look at the context of the term's use in that video: Devin was absolutely challenging Billington's masculinity, and trying to make him look like a pussy (or, if you prefer, a "bitch"). Talking about how he's never been laid, how he should get AIDS, how he engages in "faggotry." Saying that "cocksucker" is stripped of sexual connotations in this argument strikes me as fairly disingenuous. |
My two cents (for what it's worth) as a gay man. The words themselves do not offend me in the slightest. Hell, I'm proud to be a cocksucker (literal), a faggot and someone that engages in faggotry (if you haven't tried, you don't know what you are missing. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!). It only bothers me when the words are used to disparage. I realize that we currently have a use for words to insult, belittle and disparage others but it's frustrating that words that normally have a pleasant connotation (for me) are being used negatively. Such is life.
Really though, my whole point in coming into this thread was to comment on how Devin's passionate defense of those words (and others) reminded me of the passionate defense (by some Georgian citizens) to use a Confederate Battle Flag as the State Flag. Bravo sir, bravo.
