The Trap (Klopka, 2007)

I've decided that I might as well make a thread for every foreign movie I see in the next couple months. Hopefully someone will get something out of it, though naturally I won't be expecting many replies.

I finished this today, finally. Been so busy since uni. started that I haven't had hardly any time until today. Anyway, it's a very interesting film, and one that I can relate to. Modern Belgrade, Serbia is developing in many of the same ways that my home town of Bratislava, Slovakia was and still is. Things are on the up, but like most of the Balkan nations, it's still a struggle, and conditions are less than desired in many cases. This film basically takes a situation that could basically happen to anyone, and gives it a worst case scenario. Nebojsa Glogovac plays Mladen, a man whose son has a medical conditioun that requires surgery for to continue living, but that surgery is expensive, and they don't have money, so they place an ad basically asking anyone to help them with funds.

Well, as could happen to anyone, a mobster answers the ad and gives him an offer he can't refuse. Mladen accepts and carries out the act of killing a man for promised money. From there the film kind of turns for the worst. It's clear that the director, Srdan Golubovic has seen a lot of American film, as a lot of the shots throughout the film feel like they're pulled out of a Tony Scott film, except they feel really dated and somewhat pretentious. Nevertheless, the cinematography is great at times at capturing the absolute hopelessness that encompasses the protagonist.

So it's flawed, yes, but it's a noble attempt at something great, and from a country that doesn't put out a lot films, let alone ones with international attention. Recommended if you can get your hands on it.

Keep posting. Eventually I'll be able to find one of these films. Much foreign cinema is still obscure here, unless it won something at Cannes or Berlin and such. I think my province of Manitoba has one or two rental stores for films like this.
