NBC, you are a pathetic network

Okay, you have the Super Bowl, traditionally the highest-rated TV event every single year. You have hundreds of millions of people worldwide in the palm of your hands. Your primetime ratings are in the toilet, so this is a great time to let people know about your regular lineup. Here are the shows you decided to promote, aside from the episode of "The Office" that was going to be on right after the game:

- "Chuck"
- "Heroes"
- "Medium"

You have the two shows considered by critics to be the best comedy and drama on network TV ("30 Rock" and "Friday Night Lights") and you don't give them one goddamn ad. NOT A SINGLE PROMO FOR EITHER OF THOSE SHOWS. Pathetic and terrible. It just shows that you don't give a damn about any programs except a select few. You deserve to be in last place in the ratings. Jeff Zucker cannot be fired soon enough. The man had ZERO background in the creative aspect of TV and got this gig and has shown he never deserved to have it.

/Rant over

But Chuck's going to be in 3D tomorrow. That's far more important than people actually liking the show. This should be obvious.

I think by exploiting their Monday night line up they were trying to lure over some of the football fans watching who now have eight months without Monday Night Football. If they could convince even a slight percentage of the Super Bowl's viewers to give those shows a try, some might stick around and become regular watchers and give their ratings a slight boost. The game was being broadcast on their network, so it was essentially an infomercial for NBC with some regularly scheduled breaks in order for them to get in the football game.

Oh, I know that all programming is basically filler between commercials. But Christ, how can they just think that promoting ONE night will bring people around for the entire week? Pure idiocy.

Fuck, its a goddamn football game, how about promoting the show you have THAT DEALS WITH FUCKING FOOTBALL?????????

Friday Night Lights is already as good as dead, isn't it?

I would be a large sum of money that it is dead after this season. Some other network should pick it up (if I had any contacts in our entertainment division, I would be banging down their doors to nab this), but I suspect it disappears into the ether.

I've said this before, but I thought the DirecTV ratings were good enough that they might be able to pull out another season for FNL. Talk about that show always reminds me I need to catch up with it, because it really is the best drama on network TV right now.

You know what really pissed me off about NBC's cross-promotion tonight? That smug Leno at 10 spot. God, I hated that.
Nothing was worse than Jimmy Fallon's annoying ass on the pre-game show with that stupid fucking jersey on. Whose fucking idea was it to have him replace Conan?

That really was awful. I hope that crashes and burns in the ratings next year.

What the fuck is this bitching about Chuck?

Bashing the absence of 30 rock.
Not sharing the love for Chuck.

EXACTLY.

30 ROCK has already been renewed for next year. CHUCK, despite being one of the very best shows on TV, has not and needs all the help it can get. It was picking up some steam in the ratings before its holiday hiatus. I hope all the folks who were watching in December tune back in tomorrow (and then some).
You're right about Friday Night Lights - it made perfect sense doing spots during the Superbowl...for a series about football. But alas Zucker and Silverman are making millions apparently for nothing.

On the other hand, NBC has pimped the hell out of 30 Rock for quiet some time now. And as much as I dig the show, all they can think up to say is either "It's the multiple award-winning critic's darling that you should be watching" and/or "Watch this week as special celebrity guest-star __________ causes havoc for the gang!"

It needs more ratings anyway. And it's a show that can be sold easily.

I was going to suggest some Tracy quote but reading this is like Burroughs with more sense of humor...

NBC did do that "laughing your butt off" ad that promoted all of the Thursday night shows, Fey popped up in a pre-recorded bit before the game started, and Alex Baldwin was featured in that commercial for Hulu. (By the way, that had to be one of the best commercials from last night. I almost wish someone made a dark, satirical sci-fi comedy for Baldwin.) 30 Rock wasn't completely ignored and Chuck deserves the attention since ratings have not been that strong for the show.

I DVR Chuck, and we usually watch it within a day or three of air.... but it sure as shit isn't one of the very best shows on TV. It's entertaining, but there's nothing about it that is inherently good aside from the myriad geek references.

So you watch it only for the geek references? Sad.

One of the guys in the office is going to run to Subway to pick up lunch for everyone, and I'm sure my sandwich will taste decent, and it'll be a hell of a lot better than one of the ones from the vending machine, but I'm not going to argue that it's a quality meal.

I watch Chuck because it's entertaining, but being entertaining doesn't make it good.

Yvonne. Good writing. Certain charm from Chuck. If you liked Alias you will agree this is fine. Nobody is saying is Macbeth at a BuyMore.

Yvonne.
Does nothing for me. Yes, she's hot, I'm not internet geek guys saying her knees are too bony, but for me personally she does nothing. If I'm gonna watch the show for a girl it would be Morgan's girl, but either way, unless the girl in question is getting naked, it's not a reason to watch.

Aside from geek references, no. There's zero attempt to do anything clever on the show. Matter of fact, because it's a comedy, they actually are lazy. They get to not try to be clever because "hey, it's a comedy!"

Agreed. And I find the BuyMore people pretty funny, and Awesome is pretty much awesome.

I watched Alias, but I certainly wouldn't argue with anyone that it was anything more than mindless entertainment. As for Macbeth at the BuyMore, I never said I expect that. I merely said it sure as shit wasn't one of the best shows on TV. Which it isn't. It's good popcorn entertainment, and it'll be forgotten about an hour after the last episode airs.

I agree that "Chuck" is a nice show, but my issue was that it got a fucking monopoly on the ads, along with the rest of the Monday shows. There are other shows out there that NBC should have been using this stage to promote.
They definitely dropped the ball by not promoting a show about football on the Super Bowl.
It's pretty clear that Chuck needs more pushing than 30 Rock at this point. I'm not comparing qualities, but there's a shitload of shitty TV shows out there that gets ratings, and this one deserves better than what it gets. More so than fucking Heroes.

FNL, however, deserved a bump. I'm guessing NBC is letting it die.

And it had to have been intentional. No way in Hell that they just forget about it. They might have done something during the pregame show, but I didn't watch all of that---and that doesn't matter, because people tune in for the game, that's where your big audience is.

I wouldn't go that far. I mean, this is Zucker and Silverman we're talking about...
I should have mentioned Yvonne and Chuck sister. For me, Yvonne has some sex appeal beyond her body and I wish her some big screen success. Point taken I should have said good writing for a mindless hour of entertainment. I tried to say that we weren't defending Chuck based on high expectations.
Man, I thought you were going to say that Life had been cancelled. But this is a justifiable rant, FNL is a great god damn show. I think people know enough about The Office for them to not have to promote it fully. Like they said above, going for the now vagrant Monday night audience.

How dare NBC promote shows on its own network?! I say good day to you sir...I said...GOOD DAY!

Re: 30 Rock. I think it's as big as it's gonna get. They've had more 'special guest' spots than most other shows on TV, Emmy love, etc. It's Arrested Development syndrome all over again. I'm just enjoying the ride.

Dear NBC,

Thank you for being the only major network with good television shows.

Love,
Patrick
As I said in the TV commercial thread. I like the Heroes promo with the Elway, Sapp and Rice.

But I would have loved to see 30 Rock get some love. I kinda tired of FNL....and apparently so did NBC.

Hey, at least they pushed all the shows on the USA network (even if stuff like In Plain Sight and The Starter wife are garbage)
I love Chuck for a myriad of reasons and it is easily one of the best shows on television for pure entertainment.

And for those saying that it only fluff entertainment it did make many lists for Top 10 shows on tv for the year. IGN, TVGuide, I believe Time, Chicago Tribune among others...so there is quality there.
Honestly, Chuck is dead at this point and this was a last ditch effort by NBC to maybe save it.

The fact it got cut in half by the writers strike, combined with it going up against House will more then likely kill it.
It is certainly on the bubble unfortunately.

Though I have the suspiscion that if it it can maintain around 7 million viewers versus House and if Heroes continue to slide Chuck could be saved.

Before the January hiatus Chuck was only about 200K total viewers behind Heroes and was gradually increasing in the demos as well.
At this point, I could see Chuck getting another season more than Heroes.

Dear Patrick,

Might we remind you that ABC has Lost?
He said shows.
ABC still has America's Funniest Home Videos, right? I'd say grainy crotch shots and the rascally wit of Mr.Tom Bergeron warrants a pluralization.
CHUCK pulled over eight million viewers for the first time this year last night. It's now right on HEROES' ass in total viewers. If it can avoid a big drop next week and if its ratings continue to trend upward (as they have all season, albeit slowly), I think there's a good chance for renewal. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
I just think running at network in a country that makes CSI: Miami STILL a hit show, it must be incredibly difficult to make any kind of quality programming successful at all.
