Christian Bale is intense

Behind the scenes of Terminator Salvation

The incident was audiotaped, and it's amazing. It happened on the set after a director of photography accidentally ruined a scene by walking onto the set. Bale lost it, screaming, yelling and threatening to quit if the bosses didn't fire the dude.

Film execs sent the tape to the insurance company that insured the film in case Bale bailed.
Gotta love the behind the scenes stories esp when they are the bad ones.

Bale may have went a bit over the top but it's still funny.

This is what happens when you do a movie with Herzog, you KINSKI out.
Also, you can totally see that McG is a tool.
If the Director of Photography walked onto the set during a shot he deserves more abuse than that. Seriously.
I think Bale's been doing research for a Buddy Rich biopic.
I don't understand what the DP is doing walking around during a scene. If cameras are rolling and he's strolling around, that's...weird.

Too bad he couldn't call Bale on his threats and keep his career, though.
I'd like to hear Hurlbut's side, because it doesn't sound like he's walking in front of the camera. It sounds like he may have been out of camera range but within Bale's eyeline in the scene - he's talking about how Hurlbut is walking behind Bryce Dallas Howard.

Of course it wouldn't be the first time a DP was unaware that camera were rolling and walked into a scene, especially if a set is chaotic or has poor communication. It's possible that a take ended but McG kept rolling into the next take and Hurlbut didn't know, for instance.
Could be any number of things. But even if that's the case, that he's walking around in what ended up being Bale's eyeline to check a light (as he seems to be saying) I don't get why he's doing it instead of having someone else stand by to tweak as soon as the action cuts. Even if McG had them roll straight through to another take, I'd expect the DP to know what's up.
With the way Bale reacts, that couldn't have been the first time the DP screwed him up.
Bale's a well known asshole.
Whatever the true story, I thought Bale's accent going in and out with the level of rage was fascinating.
Wow. I like how he slips back into his American accent when he's closer to saying "let's do it again."

Sounds like the DP had messed something up already. He says something about "that's the second time you've wandered into a shot."

And I'd say judging by what we can hear, sounds like it had more to do with eyeline rather than actually being in the frame.

And in that respect, this could be a show of force aimed at folks other than the DP. McG is certainly the one who looks the worst in this scenario.

There's stuff I don't want to talk about on a public forum, but yeah. I'm surprised there weren't more blow ups on this set.
It's still fucking strange that a DP would be venturing that far from the camera at any moment when there is any chance that cameras are rolling. It's not quite that Kuato + Guy-attached-to-Kuato relationship that the Cam Op has with the camera... but still weird.

Bale seems to have needed to cool his shit, but I've heard worse things yelled at lower ranked people for less stupid shit on student thesis sets. On a 100m+ set? That's nearly unthinkable. I can only imagine the context of this whole thing.

I kept waiting for McG to speak up but he doesn't even say anything until Bale asks him a question. He just lets Bale rip the guy up.
Yeah, the clip makes McG look the worst. I'm very interested in hearing more stories. Are they about Bale being an asshole or McG loosing control of his set again?
It's not often I get a snippet of unedited behind the scenes like this.

Interesting stuff.
Bale sounds drunk. McG sounds tiny. DP sounds Fuck my life.
"NO, NOOOO!!"

Just shove your tail between your legs and take it, and possibly get fired. What can you do?
I wonder if anything happened on the Public Enemies set. I read something about him being the only guy that didn't go to the wrap party, my first thought ran to him being an asshole (which seems like an obvious personality trait when you watch him in certain interviews), but it could have been for any number of reasons, including TDK and/or T4 obligations.
At least it's over a real, working problem rather than being brought a diet coke when you wanted diet Dr. Pepper.
What an asshole. From everything being reported it seems he really didn't want to be John Conner.

Exactly.
Is there really a defense? There is professionalism and there is cause for complaint but to blow up like this is ridiculous. As for McG not speaking up it is a simple matter of his paygrade. He made the Charlie Angel's movies and Bale is an acclaimed actor in a highly profitable movie franchise that could walk off the set at any time. It looks like this movie might be genuinely good and he doesn't want to fuck that up from what I see.
Being a limp dick pussy is NEVER how to deal with an actor. EVER.
So did the sound mixer record this? It's not a boom mic, but sounds like it could be LAV. Even if he was told to do so by a producer, I'd think the shit is going to come down on him.
"You don't understand what it's like working with actors" Actors, precious, precious actors! Don't disturb the actors!

I do like that he tells the DP that he's a nice guy moments after threatening to beat his ass.

I wonder if this is what the "altercation" with is mother and sister was like.

I like Christian Bale but it seems like he might need to take a chill pill. A GIGANTIC CHILL PILL. Like, the size of Virginia.
Bale needs to be cast in a David O. Russell movie immediately. Blood would be shed.

Throw a little Val Kilmer in there, you've got yourself a stew baby!
Lol, Russ, the boom op would have caught every single utterence from everybody. He's fucking pro, Bale style.
It's got to be lavaliere audio. It's too clear, follows too closely, and the in and out pattern of the other voices matches. I don't think Christian would have been too pleased if there was an op booming him during the whole match.

It doesn't get recorded all that often, but this shit happens a lot, at every level. Nature of the beast.

Thank You. An insider finally confirms this.

There is a rumor going around from the crew that Depp was far more liked than Bale was during that filming.
It's clearly Bales Lav.
Boy, what an asshole. So the guy broke Bale's concentration during one take. So what?
He was in the scene. I know it's hard to understand but it's incredible disrespectful to walk in someones eyeline, more so than you seem to realize.
The best part? When Bale question's the DP's professionalism without any sense of irony.
I am seeing comparisons to Colin Farrell on other sites. Isn't Farrell considered an all-around decent guy in Hollywood? Yeah he smokes and cusses and shit but I've heard nothing but good stories about him, except apparently from Michael Mann who is a perfectionist prick that makes great movies.

Johnny Depp is well liked on every set now. Also if you're not a Bat fan Bale's assholishness is readily apparent.
Things missing from this:
- context

Though I would totally believe the Alpha Dog storyline as well, and McG - in this clip - comes off as very beta, without any sense of the appropriateness of the ripping, it's just a funny thing. If the scene was about Bale witnessing the death of someone he loved, or just had to finish something heavily choreographed, him yelling his brains out would likely be part of the ride, especially if this had happened previously. But this was shooting while TDK was making shitloads of cash, as well, right? Without the context, I read it as Bale having to vent for some shit being fucked, but that's me.

Huh? I am a Batfan, and it hasn't kept me from realizing that he's obviously not the nicest guy that's ever been, it just doesn't make any difference to me, nor should it to anyone that doesn't have to work with him.
This is bullshit. What gives him the right to humiliate the guy like this on a set? Jeez, what an asshole.
You're a nice guy but FUCKKKKKKKKKKKK YOUUUUUUUUUUU had me lolin.
Out of context I can't judge. But I can say it's fucking hilarious.
Bale might've been an asshole about it but if you have the DOP strolling onto set, during a scene, that seriously breaks the actor's concentration. I think Russ and Devin are right, this speaks more to McG's inability to control his own set.
I have nothing against the guy, but it comes across like McG has no authority on his own set, and I don't just mean with regard to keeping his actors under control. The way Bale addresses him makes this thing sound more like a ton of frustration coming to a head than a reaction to one isolated incident.

A fascinating glimpse at a side of production most folks never see, though.

DaveB to the thread STAT!
Will this be a special feature on the DVD?
In context, out of context, you can try to understand why it happened but you can't condone it.Lead in a big-budget movie,he's got his mindset in his character and how he wants the scene to play out,it could even be down to personal problems but what Bale did was equally un-professional and beyond acceptable.

People do fuck up,move this scenario into any other workplace and Bale would have gotten a serious disciplinary or even shit-canned.You can hear him rush the DP at one stage, for no one to have intervened by then is shocking.
McG,the producer on set, even security should have had this controlled by that stage.Thats the whole point they're there,to create a comfortable atmosphere for the cast and crew to function as smoothly as possible?
A director shouldn't be intimidated by his actors and he should equally be there for his DP just as he is for the lead.It just shows a lack of values to me.

Fuck it,no one will give a shit by the end of the week anyway but it will be interesting to see if anyone from the production comments,i doubt they will.
