Live Flesh (Carne trémula, 1997)

Hopefully more have seen this. Pedro Almodóvar is probably the best known Spanish director of all time, even more so than Luis Buñuel. Not because he's better than Buñuel, because honestly how many people really are? But because his films are immensely popular in Spain as well as throughout the world, whereas Buñuel as most of you must know didn't exactly cater to the mainstream.

Anyway, this is (I think?) one of his more well known films, though I definitely prefer some of his others, such as Todo Sobre Mi Madre and Habla Con Ella. That said, this film is very typical (meant in the best way) Almodóvar. Great characters, high amounts of sexuality, relationship problems, disloyalty, and as always very fine performances. Javier Bardem is great here as a paraplegic basketball player, and the Italian actress Francesca Neri turns in a very fine performance as well. Once again recommended if you haven't seen it already.

I saw this film a looooooooooong time ago. I can't remember anything! Was there a scene with a bathtoy? Or am I thinking of a different Aldomavar?

Don't remember a bathtoy...

I like this film a lot. I had a real thing for Neri for a bit after this (she looks pretty damn fine naked) and I think it was among the first times i'd been exposed to the greatness of Bardem. This and Perdita Durango got me hooked on him.

Its a pretty easy film to get into, what with the mash-up of sex, crime and destiny. I love that last shot too.

Loved Perdita Durango as well. Bardem is one of the best working today, I'd say in the top five in the world.

And yeah the bath toy is from Atame!, which is another good Almodovar.

Is that Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down? With Antonio Banderas? I feel a bit ashamed for getting my Aldomavars mixed up.

Yep that's the one.

I don't much care for Almodovar's earlier stuff but he started a real winning streak with this film. I didn't realise it had Javier Badem in it until just now - last time I saw it a few years back that name didn't really mean anything to me.

I believe I saw this film but I can't remember. My theatre has played alot of Almodovar films over the years and I get some of them mixed up. I might have to invest in a Almovodar collection fairly soon.
