I don't think Tyranny feels like a long album at all, and honestly only two of the songs "feel" long. But the amazing solo at the end of "Divine" is comparable, at least to me, to the repeated chorus at the end of "Where Have All The Rude Boys Gone." It seems like the same thing to me. "I've got a killer part of this song and I'm going to show it off." It's one thing if you're not into guitarists, but "Rude Boys" (one of Leo's greatest songs, for sure) certainly isn't concerned with finishing up and getting to the next hook/song.
Guitar solos (even good ones) are a dime a dozen, but how many rock rounds are there? It makes sense that Leo would milk that. Plus, it's really regimented and structured - guitar solos (at least as Ted plays them) are loose and improvised. Way different.

Seriously? I mean, I know they're not as "dime a dozen" as guitar solos, but it's not as if "Where Have All The Rude Boys Gone?" has this sublime structure that nobody else dares try

I think you're underestimating Leo as a guitarist in general, but we'll just have to agree to disagree. Besides, isn't rock and roll is supposed to be loose and improvised to a point?

I will agree with you that the feedback at the end of Timorous Me is annoying, but I just edited it out.

No, but it's not a rock guitar solo, which is often just an afterthought to put over a verse to make it into a bridge. The round is an integral part of the song that's not at all improvisational (I've heard the band play it live without the other guys chiming in, and it's far less effective for it). And name another song from the last few years that uses a round as effectively as "Where Have All the Rude Boys Gone"? Maybe the Decemberists' "Sons & Daughters"?

Sure. That point's just different depending on the artist and, to a greater extent, what you're into. If I were really into guitar solos, I'd probably listen to Phish or the Dead, but I'm not, so I don't. Leo's a fine punk rock guitarist, but not a good enough one that I'm anxious to hear his next guitar solo. I'm more interested in his lyrics, hooks, and general energy in the performance, because that's where he really shines. Listening to Leo for guitar solos, in my mind, is like listening to Hendrix for lyrics. Perfectly serviceable, but not the highlight.

Man, Frightened Rabbit's "Midnight Organ Fight" is killing me. I haven't even listened to their new one yet because I'm too busy having my mind blown by this.
Well it's better (at least for me).

"The Modern Leper" is sort of mind-bogglingly good. Is there anything on the new album that approaches its brilliance?
Ha, I've gotten like three people hooked on MOF since I first laid ears on it last week (week before last? Shit, I don't remember). Other than that, I need to give the new one a second playthrough before I can pass judgment. It's good, though!
The entire album is. I'm quite amazed by how strong each track is. Midnight had some average tracks, but the new album is concrete-level strong.
I adore The Modern Leper. One of my favorite songs period.

Yeah, the first time I heard the song, my reaction was pretty much:
._.
._o
o_o
o_O
O_O

O_O

It's kind of been the same for everyone that I've turned on to it, also.

EDIT: It is WAY front-loaded, though. I'm not crazy about "I Feel Better" or "Fast Blood" but between "Modern Leper", "Good Arms vs Bad Arms", "Old Old Fashioned", and "The Twist", it's like having the shit punched out of you by a boxer. By the time you get halfway through you're just drained. Then, "Keep Yourself Warm" and "Poke" show up as a couple of final jabs. It's definitely not a juggernaut, but those specific tracks are so strong that I kind of overlook the (in my 'pinion) lesser tracks.

No love for Head Roll Off?

The recent Blondie album thread has me replaying a few albums by The Charms today.

If Blondie's first album is your favorite, and you want to know just how far "X Offender" or "Rip Her To Shreds" could have been taken if "Heart of Glass" hadn't got in the way, this band's for you (though lead singer Ellie Vee couldn't even approach Harry's pipes or charisma). I have the sense they've broken up, but three or four Charms albums was probably at least one more than was necessary, anyway. Fun stuff, though.

Great song, lame video: "Gimme That Shot."

Bela Fleck's "Throw Down Your Heart, Tales from the Acoustic Planet, Vol. 3: Africa Sessions" is amazing.

Thanks to Mr. Savage, this album is completely consuming me. Beautiful, beautiful compositions. Officially one of my fave new bands:

This band. This fuckin' band. Haven't been this moved, this engulfed since...I can't remember, really. NOW I remember what it was like when I first heard Radiohead's Ok Computer. It doesn't happen too often, that's for sure.

Technically, this ain't an album, but an EP. But why be so nit-picky?

I think that might be my favorite cover on any rock record. Love it.
I can't believe it's been so long since I listened to this.

The Black Love cover is still my favourite, but it's a beast all the same.

Broken Bells - Broken Bells

The new Gorillaz disc, "Plastic Beach". I'm not sure that I'd rank it above their self-titled debut, but it's definitely an improvement over "Demon Days" (which I still dug the hell out of).

Further to the Frightened Rabbits talk earlier, 'Winter of Mixed Drinks' is owning me hard. It might not be immediately accessible, but it's fucking rewarding. There's maybe more of a slither of hope to it than 'Midnight Organ Fight' had and it suits them. Either 'Things' or 'The Loneliness' stand out for me.
Yeah, "Nothing Like You" and "Not Miserable" punched me in the gear too. It's awesome.

I randomly put this album in this morning and I can vehemently say it has finally owned me, through and through:

That album is brilliant, Ray. As for myself, I've been reunited at long last with the splendor that is...

... and thus, today is a good day indeed.

Titus Andronicus's "The Monitor". It's an epic garage rock opera about the Civil War, including Springsteen references ("Tramps like us, baby, we were born to DIIIIEEEE...") and an 8.5 minute track titled, "Four Score and Seven". Try wrapping your brains around that for a moment.
Yeah The Monitor is amazing. Pretty much booked tickets to see them live after one listen, just an amazing sounding album.
Just started listening to it, but I'm going to have a helluva time getting "The enemy is everywhere!" out of my head for the rest of the day.

'Bout time people started listening to this. And that line doesn't only reference Springsteen, it puts a spin on an infamous Billy Brag line as well (from "A New England," with the "I'm no looking for a new New Jersey" line).

You'd think the Civil War analogy would be too big of a bite to chew with a record that's really about angst, but somehow bigger is better for Titus Andronicus and they make it work. And the diverse instrumentation is fantastic too. The piano in "A Pot in Which to Piss" is fantastic.

Well, everyone's got limited time and resources for hearing new music, and it's great that we have places like this to find things that might not be on our radar. Besides, it's only been out for, what-- a month now?

Besides the Bragg reference and Bruce namecheck, that line's also a riff on Dylan's "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues."

I didn't mean to sound like I was "scolding" anyone for not listening to it sooner, I'm just glad that people are starting to get into listen/like it because it's a great album.

Parker you need to chill out your attitude is getting a little much man come on

I got that Titus Andronicus shit this weekend. Gonna listen to it at lunch!

Go by Jonsi is an amazing album. I love Sigur Ros anyway but this feels as vital and textured and interesting as Aegetis Byrjun. It's a hell of a record.

Pfff, loser. I had my copy on Friday. You probably still think "Neon Bible" is cutting edge.

From this week's Special Edition column:

CHARLEMAGNE: BY THE SWORD & THE CROSS

Quote:
Go ahead, laugh at the concept of the 87-year-old Count Dooku handling lead vocals on a “symphonic heavy-metal concept album” about the legendary Christian king. But bless him, Lee jumps in with both feet, and turns the Father of Modern Europe into Saruman.

It says here that there are “two metal bands, plus a 100-piece orchestra under the direction of composer Marco Sabiu,” but with its washes of organ, dee-dee-deedling guitar solos and blocks of sonic thunder, it all sounds like Spinal Tap to me—and, as with Tap, what makes it irresistible is the sincerely straight faces with which it’s all put together and performed.

The album even comes with confirmation “from the Heraldic College in Rome” that Lee is, in fact, descended from Charlemagne (on his mother’s side). Tim Burton better move fast on this one, though—not even Dracula lives forever.

All together now: “I shed the blood of the Saxon men / I shed the bloooooood of four thooooooousand Saxon meeeennnnn!
