Albums that are owning you right now - Page 16

Yep, Fionas The Idler Wheel is on track to being this years answer to Ceremonials for me.

It's simply quite staggeringly good.

Any fans of the Japandroids recent album should also check out Henry Clay People's new one, 25 For the Rest of Our Lives. It's on Spotify and I actually like it a bit better than Celebration Rock. Definitely rocks in the same manner.

Sadly for Fiona she will probably be knocked off the top spot by Mono's new album later this year.  Yes Mono's new album!!!  If you don't know who Mono are...I pity you.  Go youtube tracks from Mono's last album Hymn To The Immortal Wind.  Yeahhhh, that's what I'm talking about.

Lately I've got Zimmer's Dark Knight Rises soundtrack on loop.  Gotham's Reckoning is my favourite.

Not sure why every review I read has a comparison to The Replacements because that's way off base.  The Sonic Youth comparisons work pretty well though.  Lots of instrumentals and may-as-well-be instrumentals, and somebody actually laid out the tracks in a way that I really love the flow of it.  It has an imperfection about it that doesn't feel forced as most overproduced music does now, and it goes from some really rocking tracks to some mellowness with ease.

I discovered that album when I listened to the Japandroids radio station; pretty good stuff.  That also led me to Cloud Nothings' Attack on Memory, which is my number two album of the year (behind Celebration Rock.)

I also bought Lana Rel Rey's album; I avoided it because I thought 'Video Games' was a really shitty song (and I still do), but the rest of the album is surprisingly really good!  Definitely a pleasant surprise.

Royal Headache. 70's punk with a singer that sounds like a 70's soul crooner. And it works.

Also love Channel Orange and the new Dirty Projectors. Really good stuff.

Just picked up this beauty:

Copper-Blue-packshot.jpeg

One of my favourite albums, remastered and reissued with a ton of B-sides and live tracks and a DVD. They had the Beaster and File Under Easy Listening deluxe editions as well, but alas my funds only permitted the purchase of one, and grabbing this was was a must. An amazing, amazing album. Can't wait to hear the remastered version.

Al Green Explores Your Mind

Bruce Springsteen Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J.

A couple of old favorites.

The entire catalog of Thrice I have missed out on the past few years.  I was into their hardcore stuff, but Vheissu turned me off, so I stopped following them.  Revisiting a bunch of stuff now and loving it.  I think they write great lyrics and the arrangements are pretty interesting.  If you followed Thrice in the past, it's worth checking them out to see how much they have changed at least.

Anybody rockin the new Nas album?

Channel Orange is owning me.  I'm not even a general fan of R&B, but it fills me up nice.

I just had to go somewhere to say that the new Gaslight Anthem is a disappointment so far. Will give it time. Just kind of middle of the road.

Better or worse than American Slang? Because what you say pretty much sums up how I felt about that one.

Creedence Clearwater Revival "Chronicle, vol. 1 & 2"

I'm on such a Velvet Underground kick right now.

I guess it's worse. I just really hate the production right now. I would say it's just more of the same with compressed sounding guitars. I really liked the lead off single and was very excited.

Loaded is one my favorite albums right now.  "Loaded with Hits!"

Yeah, still listening to Florence + The Machine everyday, either Lungs or Ceremonials. I can't get over how good these albums are, thank you whichever Chudster first suggested her.

Passion Pit's new album "Gossamer" is amazing

Probably very late to whoevers party but recently discovered Tv on the Radio...

Specifically the album Dear Science, owning my ass!

I am fan a Gossamer.  I wouldn't call it "amazing", but I definitely think it is quality listening.  The song, "Carried Away", however, IS amazing.

As for TV On The Radio, I am a giant fan.  I've seen them 3 times live, the last time front row (first ever front row concert too.  It's the way to go).  Anyway, Dear Science is fantastic and their new one Nine Types of Light is also really good.  If you like Dear Science, pick this up immediately.  Return to Cookie Mountain is a little different than the previously mentioned albums, but I also recommend it.  It's the necessary trio for TVOTR.

I like the first half of it, but the second half is pretty weak. Some of the mid to late songs have this weird, slow, post-grunge sound to them. It's like the Gaslight Anthem are trying to do Nickelback.

Cookie Mountain would be essential solely on the strength of "Wolf Like Me".

Schwartz, you are correct, sir.

I also have a deeper appreciation for "A Method" after seeing it live with Diry Projectors helping out.  Everyone had a percussion instrument and was just slamming away like the drums do at the bridge on the album verison.  It was bonkers.

Breathtaking record.

CRUSH MY SOOOOUUULLLLL

MAKE ME FEEL NUUUUUUMMMMMMB

Fuck yeah. Also, the Streetcleaner remaster sounds really good. Makes the album more listenable on average headphones, like for all those times I need to drown out the cackling animalistic fuckers on the bus.

Other top of the line bus music: All the Dillinger Escape Plan albums. To me, they are as soothing as strapping on a Bane mask.

Ire Works is still underrated. You can't beat the raw attitude and shamelessness of their stylistic diversions, combined with precise, good-humored brutality.

That's the song that first drew my attention to them when I heard it during the end credits of Detention.

Yeah I gave you a thumbs up for this. I love Dear Science but this is my favorite song of theirs and what I use to introduce people to TV

I hear that "Too Much Blood" was supposed to be Soundgarden influenced and he was doing a Chris Cornell impression. Also hear they have been huge Pearl Jam fans lately. The dude is all over the place with his influences, and the obvious ones (Springsteen) have worked and the fringe ones have as well (Afghan Whigs and Waits on The Horrible Crowes record), but Pearl Jam and Soundgarden? I love the song "Mae".

I detested the movie and still walked out with a smile on my face.

"A Method" was a huge grower for me as well (as was TVOTR generally).  Nine Types of Light is pretty damn great too.  "Will Do" is the big stand out, but "Repetition" grows like a mother as well.

Been listening to Drive-By Truckers' Decoration Day a lot lately.  "Sink Hole" and the title track are the highlights.

So, The White Stripes are not my thing at all.  Them, and the genre they hover around in, just do nothing for me.  However, The Dead Weather is pretty damn fantastic.  Really liking it...glad I found them.

That's really funny, because I have the complete opposite opinion.  I love the White Stripes, but found The Dead Weather did nothing for me.  Oh well.

Where's that banhammer?

Anyway, Silverchair's Neon Ballroom and Diorama are two old friends I haven't spoken to in a while.  We just reconnected and I can't believe I forgot how awesome they are.

The Dead Weather is the one Jack White-related band I find myself getting tired of again after a few go-rounds. Especially Sea of Cowards, which just felt weak and disingenuous to me; I think the band's experiment with Horehound was a success but it had run its course, and they knew it. The White Stripes and The Raconteurs though, I'll probably never get tired of.

The Clash

Mono's new album 'For My Parents' has leaked, and it is album of the year for sure, nothing's gonna knock it off the top of my list.  I'm seeing them in November too, gonna be awesome.

King Cannons - The Brightest Light

Debut from a bunch of Melbourne-based Kiwi expats - really solid rock n' roll band who musically fall somewhere between Strummer and Springsteen. Maybe a tad overproduced in spots, but some bloody good songwriting on this thing. A band with a lot of promise, I'd say.

woah, woah, I think you're missing what usually happens here Worky.  Aussies claim anything kiwi that's decent as their own, then the kiwis have a good old whinge about it.  Saying they're kiwi up front isn't playing the game!

owning me at the moment is Music for The Jilted Generation by The Prodigy.  Dug it out to listen to in the car.  Still my favourite of their albums, before they became the Keith and Maxim show.

Sadly this also will appear in the tired shit forum too :(

NOFX's new effort.  I can't seem to get around to the new DMB because of it...yeah so?

I knew nothing about the band other than the lead singer's gender transition, but I checked out Against Me's White Crosses and it has not left my car stereo since. I am actually dreading having to return it; I'll probably head straight from the library to the record store.

Completely obliterates the line between punk and arena rock without sacrificing a whit of punk edge or arena rock's catchiness. Several earworms from the album are fighting for my mind's attention right now, in fact.

Make sure to check out Reinventing Axl Rose.

ALGIERS by Calexico.

I Bet on Sky by Dinosaur Jr.

Kinda a strange one as it sounds a lot those Barlow-less major label albums, Where You Been in particular.

Flying Lotus' new album came out today and it's pretty damn great.  On my second listen...

I had no idea that was out, Ambler.  I'm getting on that now.  Waiting for his next one for a while now.

Is Electric Light Orchestra considered lame? I don't care, because I've been digging Out of the Blue lately.

Caveat : I'm a huge old Dinosaur Jr. fan.  Before they reunited.  Everything after 'Where You Been' is hit/miss for me, but 'I Bet On Sky' is pretty fucking great.
