Killzone 2

Thread Starter
Being called by some as the best PS3 exclusive yet, I figured it's time we start this thread up. The game is out Feb. 27 and the demo comes out Feb. 5. I think it's restricted to pre-orders in the US, but those with European accounts should be able to get it from the Euro PSN store.

Right now people are saying it has an incredibly solid but not groundbreaking single player and a very robust multiplayer system. Graphics are supposedly amazing and co-op is its weakest areas.

I've got it preordered from Amazon ($5 off coupon and temporary price drop got it for $52 with free shipping). How many else are planning on picking it up? More importantly, how much CHUD rampaging is going to be going on?
I'm REALLY fucking excited. I don't know why, Killzone just has this spell over me. Plus it looks GORGEOUS and word of mouth is solid.
There may be moderate CHUD rampaging. I've already got my squads and clan lined up from my CoD crew.

I'd forgotten there was even co-op. For it to be weak means nothing, since it's a feature I thought we weren't getting and i'll milk it for every inch of it's value even if it's awful.

As i've said - the engine will dictate whether this replaces CoD4 for me. I don't care how it looks - the engine and expertly crafted levels are what drew me back from CoD5.

Hit-detection and damage are going to be under quite harsh scrutiny early on in this one. I may not even touch the single player for a while.
No Co Op.
Co-op's linked with the bots patch - post launch.
I'm looking forward to it, but will wait until I try the demo to commit. I really want to love it though.
Sweeeeeet.
Consider it bought. I've been looking forward to this for a very, very long time.
Day 1 purchase for me... which given my cheap-ass gaming habits is really saying something.
The multiplayer beta a couple months back sold me on this game, so I'll definitely be down to rampage with the CHUD crew. McIrish, I expect you to get this game.
One of the only reasons my PS2 isn't in a box is because of Killzone -- this thing = bought.
I'm broke but this game will be mine on the 26th. I'm lookin forward to some online fraggin with chud psners.

Btw, its funny to read reviews that say the game SHOULD have included Co-op and now Guerilla are going to release it in a patch. Their support for killzone:liberation on the psp was awesome. brand new chapter, added online component. Looks like they're continuing that with KZ2.
A liberation-style Killzone on the PS3 would have been fantastic. Up the resolution, the amount of on-screen chaos and put in some truly fantastic levels and sequences and you'd have the making of a must-buy PSN title.

Wasted opportunity.
Now that would be cool. They could still make a game like that for PSN but seeing how sony just continue to drop the ball on PSN titles, I don't see it happening. But KZ:L on a larger screen, high rez, More carnage on screen and with the ps3 controller (bye bye psp nub)? Yeah, that would be a day one purchase.
Exactly. The multiplayer on that could be wonderous. Map editors. Vehicles. Squad tactics right through to massive 64-player battles over ruined landscapes and underground bunkers...

You're welcome to take that one Sony.
Yeah, that would be glorious. Sony seem to be getting on the ball a little lately.. Crash commando is like platformer multiplayer doom and I don't see anything like it on XBLA.

Anyway back to the KZ2 talk. Looking forward to some multiplayer action but playing any first person shooters from australia with the rest of the world (Unless your in NZ) can be quite a laggy experience. I really fucking hate meleeing some one only to drop dead suddenly and realise that they punched me out first, because of better ping. Resistance 2 plays like a champ and Call of Duty 5 lets you select Your own country servers.. so hopefully KZ2 takes some hints from those two games and improves the online experience (for me).

Unless the Demo turns me off, this will be bought on release day, which might be the first time I've ever done that.

I'm replaying the first one right now since all the coverage on K2 has got wanting to shoot Helgast. Can't wait for this!

Welcome to my world - though to be fair Warhawk plays exceptionally well even if I select the European servers (which you need to do fairly regularly when you live in NZ), and KZ2 will have an exponentially greater level of server (and Sony) support in comparison. Surely they wouldn't drop the ball on this...
Looks like the post release Co-op Patch was Bullshit. I hope this article is wrong and that Guerilla do actually put in some version of co-op (online or splitscreen).

Chun006, Warhawks been ok in my experience, but Resistance 2 is simply awesome. Lag free, even in the 60 player matches. If KZ2 matches that I'll be stoked.
So will this demo be available tonight after midnight, or tomorrow afternoon? I would love to get my hands on this before I sleep tonight.
Sony never updates the content early- go to bed. Half the time the update comes at night on the day announced.

Probably not until the PS Store update tomorrow afternoon/evening.
Oh well, I'll have something to look forward to tomorrow then. Thanks guys.

Is KZ still being hailed as the Halo killer?

I think Halo was already killed by Call of Duty.
Halo killed itself with Halo 2 by going up their own ass.

The Euro Killzone 2 demo is live if you don't want to wait until the servers are hammered tonight.
Really short, but really great. Graphics are really solid and the gunplay seems slightly twitchy. Release day cannot come fast enough.
Is there a free demo for North Americans?
Thread Starter
I believe the North American demo requires a GameStop pre-order until Feb. 26.
My Impressions: The demo was fun, yet very short. No multiplayer component. The game feels like a tactical fps more than a run and gun one. Lighting effects look awesome but I didn't think this was the best looking console game ever or anything. Resolution looks a little soft.
With the shooting model and hit detection, The hit detection felt spot on to me (shooting those helgast is hella satisfying), while the shooting model felt loose. Short controlled bursts got me really accurate fire, anything else especially long range went all over the place.
You can make a EU account and download their free demo. That's what I did. It is really not run and gun at all. You will get your face shot off. It would've been great if there were limited MP component to the demo considering how incredibly short it is.

The default rifle felt alot better in this regard than the second assault rifle you can pick up off the ground(the one with the open sights). That thing was just spray and pray. I really liked the pistol though, it felt pretty strong for what it was and infinite ammo cant hurt. One thing I couldnt get to work was the knife though. I know L1 is melee attack but while mashing buttons to initially figure things out I had a knife icon at the bottom left of my screen and couldnt do anything with it. Anyone else see that as well?

Pressing Right on the d-pad seems to pull out your knife. Hit R1 to swing it.

Well as short as the demo was, it was great and left me wanting more. That's always a good sign. The cover system works really well, too bad you won't be able to use it in multiplayer.
I think he was talking about those one-hit-kill moves that are screen-prompted. They have those in the original KZ, too.

I haven't played the demo, though...
Yes, you press right to switch to your knife in single-player mode. It's an instant kill weapon - the only problem is, of course, getting close enough to slash or stab a Helghan.

And speaking of Helghans, I'm playing in the middle part of the demo (outside the warehouse), and I'm knifing Helghans here and there - and I die as I run into the middle to get a double kill when three of them draw a bead on me and blow me to bits.

The kicker is what happens as I fall to my side. One of the Helghans that didn't hit me turns his head - notices me - turns himself around - kneels a little bit, and waves at my dead body. Like "don't worry, we'll get you next time, too".

Whoever came up with that, my hat's off to them.
Really liked it, I going to bitch about a couple of things though since the positives have been previously mentioned and I agree with them.

I noticed two changes I'm not crazy about. They seem to have limited you to only one assault rifle at a time, on the first on I used mainly the helgast rifle until I needed the grenade launcher on the ISA gun. Also, now that R2 is grenade and L1 is melee I think they may have gotten rid of the secondary fire on both assault rifles, the grenade launcher on the ISA and the shotgun on the Helgast rifle.

That being said I do think it looked and played fantastic in the very short demo.

It really is simple to set up a Euro account, just have an email address and mailing address ready. For instance I live in the Top Gear office in the BBC building in London.
Yeah, carrying only one rifle sucks. I totally forgot that the weapons in KZ1 had secondary fire. Wonder why they got rid of them, especially since you can choose your grenades by pressing down on the d-pad.
The German Embassy is where I reside. I hope they enjoy any PSN mail that may be sent their way.
Can you open an account like that for Japan? They have some great PS1 classics on their PSN that I want badly.
Thread Starter
Well, you can't BUY anything with your fake account unless you buy a voucher for online credit since your credit card info won't match up with your account info. But yeah, you can create a Japanese account the same way. I've got three total, one for England, one for Japan, and one for the US.

There may still be region coding on the PS1 games on the Japanese PSN though. I'd check online to be 100% before going to the trouble of trying to find a Japanese PSN card.
Worth a look. I shall do some research.
Yeah, I set up a Japanese account the other day to get hold of the RE5 demo.

It's pretty easy, despite the language barrier. Most of it's common sense.
It looks pretty fantastic, but the dead-spots on the actual control setup are pretty apparent. I'm running "Alternative 2" which is almost identical to CoD's control scheme (I like to be able to quickly precision aim) - but the joysticks themselves feel sluggish, like there's acceleration at the start and end of each movement. It's not very precise.

Single rifle is possibly the least clever move they could have made. Even liberation allowed a combination (at least, i'm sure it did?) of two weapons.

Realism could well explain both my gripes. The hit detection's surprisingly good actually although they do take a pounding and there's not particularly much satisfaction to be garnered from headshots.

It does look great though. The gripe about resolution is probably linked to it being a 720p game as opposed to CoD5's wonderous 1080p. The lighting is certainly excellent and there was no obvious slowdown - even on that opening crash I thought it'd lose it.
I'm not a big fan of Adam Sessler's, but his response to his mailbag after giving this a 5 out of 5 is quite funny. A perfect score isn't enough for some people apparently.

Plus I think he's a little drunk here. He sounds kind of odd.
He does sound a little drunk.

I'm looking forward to this.
Wow, looking at that video and seeing the gameplay on the screen behind him stoked me. I hadn't heard much of anything about this, but as I'm hooked on FPSs this will definitely get a purchase. And the exclusivity is nice, too.

Are you using the silly default controls? That stuff makes precision aiming a pain in the ass.

Also, I seem to be wrong about the resolution. My display settings reset. It's now playing in 1080p and looks insane. It'll still prioritize 720p over 1080i though.
Okay, 1080p, now we're talking.

No matter what resosolution it outputs at, the internal target resolution is probably closer to 720p. The system then scales that image to 1080i/p. If it's something lik CoD4, the render resolution is actualy closer to 640 or 680 and it is then upscaled to 720p or 1080i/p. I'm pretty sure the only games that natively render at 1080p are smaller PSN games.
