Should have this thing in by Tuesday night for the 360.

Gamertag: WeatiSnake
Bit the bullet, pre-ordered at Gamestop. 360 flavor. Traded in a shit ton of games, paid it off in full. And the Gamestop 3 minutes away is open at midnight.

See you Tuesday.
Figures I get my Star Craft 2 Beta opt in 4 days before this game comes out! But come this Tuesday, I'm all Cowboy.
I've got some trade-in credit at Gamestop that I've had for like a year. Gonna see if I have any trade-ins lying around and go ahead and get the PS3 version. If it's good I'll still get the pc flavor should that come to pass.

Watched High Plains Drifter and some other more forgettable stuff on Encore Western channel this weekend. Gonna put in Josey and Unforgiven and Searchers before Tuesday.

Consarn it.

I've got first viewings of Shane and Fistful of Dollars lined up for tonight, repeat engagements with Assassination of Jesse James and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly lined up before tomorrow night. I usually watch Blazing Saddles whenever the hell i want anyway, so, sure, I'll throw that on.

Watched Unforgiven for the first time last night, and was absolutely floored by it.

Wow.

On a related note, I read this week there's an achievement for evading the law on a white Bronco. Cheap joke, but dammit, I will laugh my ass off earning it.

How'd you miss that one? It's so good.
I've got Tombstone, the 3:10 To Yuma remake (which I've never seen) and The Good The Bad And The Ugly waiting for me to watch this week, may even try and squeeze in the two Young Guns films and Appaloosa if I have time - but then I do have a few extra days to wait than you guys, dag nab it.

Come on guys, we've all got blind spots and films we shoulda-but-haven't got to yet.

Don't forget the often missed but should never be ignored Fistful of Dynamite.
It's only been in the last 4 years or so I've started watching Westerns. The inherent racism/xenophobia/prick-and-flag waving in the genre has turned me away from ever so many films there.

I've been trying to sift my way through the years UP to Unforgiven, but this game and this weekend kinda forced my hand. Simple as that.

Watched UNFORGIVEN on Blu last night. Looked and sounded amazing. (The thunderstorm damn near made my house shake.) That movie holds up so fucking well.

May try to squeeze in THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY tonight, although I'm pretty sure the wife will want to watch the HOUSE season finale at some point during the evening.

Meanwhile, as far as RED DEAD REDEMPTION goes ...
Gamefly is spiriting it to my mailbox as we speak. So I should have it by mid-June...
Well you can count me in as another that has been won over by the trailer, that was one really well made and effective clip.
One more day. I've already made my wife aware she'll be a widow for the remainder of the week at least.

From 10am-2pm Tuesday at Toys R Us Reward Members get a $25 gift card with purchase. I think I'm just going to wait a year and get it for ten bucks.

I'll wait until the ZBox 9000 comes out. I'll be able to pick this up for five bucks at a garage sale for sure.

Let me start by saying this: Thank god I did not read a single preview of this game till Saturday. Seriously. If you guys had known me during the run up to ASSASSIN'S CREED or FAR CRY 2, I'd have been completely insufferable. I think the first game I ever got over hyped for* was Perfect Dark. Then it was MGS2SOL. Then I quit videogames for a few years. By the time I bought an xbox360 in the fall of 2006, I discovered the existence of a game called ASSASSIN'S CREED. It looked like the game that I'd been waiting my whole life for. What followed was an interminable hell of checking daily for updates, screen shots and previews. It was one of the longest waits of my life and totally unfun. After that, I basically swore off video game previews. Delayed gratification is just not my thing. But all the same I ended up getting obsessed with FAR CRY 2 and nearly two years of hype followed. It was awful

Since that time I've quit reading previews, watching trailers, or even looking at screen shots. It's too much to take. I was vaguely aware of RDR but steered clear of every last article. I knew it would either be a silly mess like the previous RDR, or it would be incredible and my internal hype machine would kick into top gear

And so this weekend is basically the first time I read up on the game. Essentially over the past 48 hours I've gone through all the stages of hype in fast forward. Last night I was unable to get to sleep, so energized I was by imaginings of the old west.

This sounds like a game I've been waiting for my whole life to play, and man oh man, I'm glad I've not been paying attention till now. Tomorrow (assuming AMAZON does not betray me... my greatest fear at this moment) should be fraking amazing

*Not meaning that the game didn't live up to that hype, meaning that the experience of living with all that hype was overwhelming and unpleasant.

EDIT: I am kind of worried I might get sick from this game. During MASS EFFECT 2 I ended up not virtually not sleeping and got so run down that I got a huge cold

You DO know RDR is set in the 20th century, right? For some, this may be a deal-breaker.

I recommend waiting for reviews and letting the user community weigh in before making your purchase, PK. I'm holding out for the eventual collapse of the world economy when I can buy this for a few bullets and a pallet of scrap metal.
But how will you play it when all the TVs will show nothing but Yule Log, if James Cameron is to be believed on this matter.

Yes that sort of irks me, but oh well, it still seems like it will be cool

I've been saving up my nuka cola quantums, so thankfully I won't have to scrounge for scrap

PS One thing about RDR that I don't like is the 'dead eye' mechanic. I HATED that thing from CALL OF JUAREZ 2. It makes shooting feel like a mini game and not an action that I have control over in real time.

I much MUCH prefer the shooting mechanic from COJ1. It was challenging and more than a simple bullet time thing, but you were still shooting and not marking targets to be taken down by cinematic.

Eh. Silverado's cute and all, but it assumes you've seen a lot of good westerns before it.

Watch The Outlaw Josey Wales. And The Long Riders. And any John Ford western of any kind, with or without John Wayne.

Dyin' ain't much of a livin', boy.

That's still a little steep. Looks like I'll be waiting for the technological singularity, when the holy trinity of God, information, and consciousness all reunite and spacetime becomes meaningless. I can probably get this for like two or three bucks then.

But you won't care, because by then you'll be able to play a virtual version of Frogger AS THE FROG.

Back in the '80s, the southern rock band I was with made it a daily obsession to find moments that were worthy of all the quotable moments from the film. Of all the amazing Clint Eastwood westerns out there, it remains closest to my heart.

Now, you gonna pull those pistols or whistle Dixie?
Lots of reviews and good stuff coming out today. IGN gave it a 9.7, which is pretty darned good. Still confused as to why they gave GTAIV a 10 when it came out. Sadly, I have to wait until Tuesday night to play as I have to work all day. Alex, when can we expect a review of this?

I guess I'm the only one who gives the first 50-65% of Josey Wales's running time a solid A++, and the remainder of the film about a C-.

A lot of the "classic" Westerns, IMHO, haven't aged all that well, though I still appreciate them. Magnificent Seven, High Noon, Shane, True Grit, The Shootist, Stagecoach ... not sure how many of them I'd pop in to casually watch.

The four Sergio Leone westerns (Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, Good, Bad, Ugly, and Once Upon a Time in the West), the Searchers, and the Wild Bunch, on the other hand, I still watch all the time. And Unforgiven is probably the best of the bunch.

I was with you until that last bit. Unforgiven's great, but every other one of those movies tops it.

I really want to go home and watch The Wild Bunch tonight (as I get as much of a Pekinpah vibe as a Leone one from what I've seen of the game), but my Bluray player's out for repairs.

I'm with you on this. High Noon did not impress me at all, it felt like a much older film than it really is. I couldn't make it to the end of Magnificent Seven (and at the the time I hadn't even seen the Seven Samurais so it didn't even suffer from the comparison) and I made it through about ten minutes of True Grit.

I just looked through a bunch of on-line "western classics" list. Wow. There were a shocking amount of movies on there that not only do I not think they aged well, I just plain didn't like or couldn't finish them. Quite a few J. Wayne movies ... hmm ... maybe I don't like Westerns quite as much as I thought. Or maybe there are a lot of formulaic/dated/bad Westerns.

I think High Noon must have felt utterly dated on the day it was released. Even if it was released in the mid 1600s.
Crazy. RIO BRAVO better not be one of those movies. MAGNIFICENT SEVEN's wonderful.
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance tops the list, for me.
While I'm not a Ford/Wayne worshipper, STAGECOACH is the tits. Can't wait to get a look at the Bluray.

My theory is that High Noon's old fashion style is what made it popular when it came out. It was a film for the older crowd who did not like all those noir films. It later got mistaken as a classic because, hey, it's in black and white and all that.
And, of course, no collection is complete without Billy Zane's Posse and the complete Young Guns television series.
A preemptive "I hate you all" post. The next 2-3 weeks are going to be rough. (The 360's on loan to a young'un til after Memorial Day. Curse my heart of gold.)

But I've been doing the Western binging too, when I can grab the time here and there. Keeping with the spaghettis though. Knocked out the Leones recently, and looking forward to revisiting Corbucci next up, DJANGO, THE GREAT SILENCE, and the underrated COMPANEROS. Which'll lead into a Tomas Milian fest with DJANGO KILL, RUN MAN RUN, and Fulci's FOUR OF THE APOCALYPSE, which is truly fucked up. Have to fit KEOMA in there someplace, too.

But for American-made, can't recommend loudly enough Boetticher's and Mann's entries. 7 MEN FROM NOW (thanks to Beaks for that illumination) and THE NAKED SPUR being my favorites from each (though THE TALL T and WINCHESTER '73 occasionally make a strong bid).

And all you bastards who're gonna be playing RDR tomorrow and the rest of May? You know what you are? You want to know whose son you are? You don't, I do, everybody does. You're the son of a thousand fathers! All bastards, like you! And your mother? Your mother-- [kicked in the face]
TGTB&TU, JOSEY and UNFORGIVEN is sort of my personal Eastwood western trilogy. Those are the three I never tire of and can basically sit and watch anytime they're on TV.

Biggest guilty pleasure: YOUNG GUNS II. I'm kind of a sucker for 80s/90s William Peterson and epic Alan Silvestri scores.

I hear a lot of dumb shit on the boards, but wow.

Back to the game, who's getting the Gamestop pre-order? I heard someone say that the case was supposed to be over-sized, but is it really over-sized? I just want to know, so that I can clear shelf space for it.

I'm getting the Gamestop order, but I haven't heard anything about the size. I do know it's supposed to come with the soundtrack.
Oh, and RE: UNFORGIVEN ... the scene right after the kid kills the whore-cutter on the shitter, when Munny finds out Ned was murdered and starts drinking while the kid has his little meltdown -- it's amazing how many classic lines of dialogue spring from just that scene. Basically everything that comes out of Eastwood's mouth during that couple of minutes is iconic.

(Can you even use the term "iconic" to describe spoken dialogue? Eh, probably not, but fuck it. I couldn't think of a more appropriate word.)

I do believe it's the size of a regular game case with a slip cover similar to a DVD. UGH, what a waste of trees those are.
My Westerns collection is sadly lacking. Thankfully, AMC and Netflix Instant Queue have been keeping me content with Westerns recently. AMC's been playing 'Outlaw Josey Wales' and 'Unforgiven' while Netflix brought me 'The Proposition' and 'The Quick And The Dead'.

And when I didn't have enough free time to watch a whole movie, I got caught up on 'Justified' on Hulu. I know, it doesn't count. Still like the show, anyway, and a slight Western flavor is still present.

I don't know about the size either, but I do know that I'm spinning that soundtrack on the drive home.
