Sucks.

Another act I should have seen live when I had the chance.

That link is the only source of information on the possible passing of Lux. I think I may wait until I see this from various other sources before I become officially bummed. And yeah, you should have seen them they were outta sight.

One I'd more or less expected, knowing he wasn't in the best of health, but damned sad. He and Ivy were sort of the evil twins of John and Exene, and at their best, The Cramps were one helluva live act.

And it's official:

The Official Statement:

For Immediate Release:
February 4, 2009

Lux Interior, lead singer of The Cramps, passed away this morning due to an existing heart condition at Glendale Memorial Hospital in Glendale, California at 4:30 AM PST today. Lux has been an inspiration and influence to millions of artists and fans around the world. He and wife Poison Ivy’s contributions with The Cramps have had an immeasurable impact on modern music.

The Cramps emerged from the original New York punk scene of CBGB and Max’s Kansas City, with a singular sound and iconography. Their distinct take on rockabilly and surf along with their midnight movie imagery reminded us all just how exciting, dangerous, vital and sexy rock and roll should be and has spawned entire subcultures. Lux was a fearless frontman who transformed every stage he stepped on into a place of passion, abandon, and true freedom. He is a rare icon who will be missed dearly.

The family requests that you respect their privacy during this difficult time.

I had a chance to go see them sometime back in the early 90's, but I think they were playing the same night as Jonathan Richman, and I chose him instead. My thinking at the time was that the Cramps were over the hill anyway, which is a pretty dumb way to look at things. These guys were and are one of my favorites.

Ah well. So it goes. I saw The Cramps several times through the 80's and 90's and the last time I saw them Lux and Ivy looked to be quite old but they still blew the roof off the joint.

I'm cryin' 96 tears with 96 eyes. Sad, sad news.

There's an article at pitchfork and there's the image above...
I enjoyed them a lot.

Indeed, great great band, true performer.. also got to respect the fact that he was still the same freak in his early sixties as he was when he started out his career.
Cramps have too much a reputation of being a one-gimmick band, hopefully we'll get a revision of that image now. Anyone checking out the triple-double-disc retrospective 'Songs The Cramps Thaught Us' can see they knew their history- that's about the best damn freak-fifties compilation around.
