So thinking of seeing a concert on my birthday (mar 5) and have a wee bit of a dilemma. Do I pick one concert in the hopes of re-creating one of my all-time favorite concert performaces (Elton John/Billy Joel) or do I go with someone that I have never heard live (Flogging Molly). Having grown up listening to traditional Irish folk songs, I was more than pleasantly surprised to have stumbled onto Flogging Molly (who mixes traditional Irish folk with modern tendancies). Highly intrigued to see them live (but would hate to be disappointed) hence my dilemma.

I'd go with Flogging Molly, with a healthy dose of beer with it. But that's just me.

That's definitely who I'm leaning toward (especially since it's at a smaller venue - I prefer more intimate settings).

Flogging Molly, especially if you've already done the John/Joel show before.

Gotta go with Flogging Molly. It's bound to be a hell of a lot more lively than watching John and Joel at this point in their careers.

Unless the previous Elton John/Billy Joel concert was TRULY spectacular and worth repeating, I'd skip it and go see a band that you've never seen before. Much like you, I prefer smaller venues.

Those picking Molly, have you seen them live before and if so, how was the experience?

Yes, I have seen John/Joel (when they first teamed up in the mid 90s at Rice Stadium in Houston).

TRULY spectacular? Most definitely; however it has been 10+ years since that event and the likelihood of them having less energy is fairly high.

I have not seen Molly, but those who I've talked to who have raved about the experience.

If they've already started on their current tour, look for some reviews. If people are raving about it and comparing the current show favorably to the one 10 years ago, I'd consider going again.

Flogging Molly are awesome, and is one of those band that any type of recording won't do justice to, no matter what.

Yeah, I've seen Flogging Molly a couple of times now and they are well worth the experience. Just a good, good time all around. Go with the Irish.

This pretty much sells me. Now to begin the search for tickets.

Nothing against Elton, but if I were ever at a Billy Joel concert, it would only be to carry off a meticulously-planned assassination.

And, frankly, while Flogging Molly ain't quite The Pogues, they're a fine live band that's worth seeing no matter what the alternative might be.

Fuck Billy Joel.

FM and beer. They played at The Avalon a while back and despite the presence of green-shirted "I'M IRISH" douchebags, they were great.

I say this all the time.

Flogging Molly are one of the best bands I've seen.

Both good choices, but I'd go for Flogging Molly (and lots and lots of beer), seeing as how you've already done Elton/Billy and it'll never be as good as the first time you saw 'em. Besides, from what I understand (never saw 'em live) Flogging Molly in an intimate setting must be one HELL of a party waiting to happen.
