I thought Onan just "pulled out" (coitus interruptus) and avoided knocking up his sister-in-law. The "spilling of the seed" is definitely misinterpreted (as you state), but (simply as Devil's Advocate) masturbation's REEEEEAAAAL tough without "impure thoughts" (if you're unmarried, that is) and an "eagerness for lustful pleasure", which (
fundamentally speaking) is supposed to be avoided, as per Biblical instructions.
Personally, I find the Ex-Hypocrite one the most ironic, due to it being on a T-Shirt ("plank in your own eye").
