Last night at Dad's Garage Theater I caught the preview performance of "Mojo," a play by Jez Butterworth. It's set in London right as the rock and roll craze first started to take hold in the UK. It's kind of like a Guy Ritchie movie colliding with a Mamet play. The story follows a handful of characters who work at a night club in London. The club owner is meeting with a mover and shaker in London's music scene to discuss a deal involving a certain singer whose star is on the rise, and then things go wrong.
The show is very kinetic, particularly in the first act. Performances ranged from good (though some accents were a little off) to freakin' incredible. There were a few technical hiccups in the performance but those should be ironed out for opening night tonight.
This was a show I auditioned for back in the fall. It stung watching a show I really wanted to be a part of, but I have to say the Scott Warren (who played the role I auditioned for) was fantastic. He was the right choice for the role. And Matt Myers (of 11 Colonels fame) was great too. The two of them play off one another perfectly.
Our own Andrew Sweeney directed a fantastic video promo for the play. Right now the only place I've seen it is on Facebook, but I hope it moves beyond that. It's a great introduction to the characters in the show. I don't know if links to Facebook even work, but just in case here it is.
EDIT: Found it on YouTube too.
