were did you go, and what did you see?

We were in L.A. (a nice and remarkably affordable place in Silverlake) for the first two nights, met up with some friends to see Away We Go at the Arclight, went to Griffith Park.

Then we headed up the coast on the 1, staying over in San Luis Obispo, then spending another night at this fantastic place in Big Sur (probably the highlight of the whole trip - we're wusses when it comes to camping, so it was an ideal way to get the view without the hassle). Didn't have time for Hearst Castle on the way up, but we did stop near there to watch a bunch of elephant seals cavorting on the beach. We were in Carmel for an afternoon (touristy town, excellent mission), then went up to stay on Cannery Row in Monterey. The hotel was overpriced and, again, the town was pretty touristy, but we found a tasty Indian restaurant and saw the aquarium, which was pretty cool.

Then we came back down on the 101, stayed a night in Paso Robles (nothing great, but it was a convenient stopping point and, important since it was the only super hot day while we were in CA, had a pool), then had two more nights in L.A. at a Holiday Inn in Century City. On the first night, we saw Jon Brion at Largo (Fiona Apple showed up for three songs, which was a nice surprise), and the following day we met up with an assortment of folks, including Jake, on Venice Beach.

Overall, had tons of Mexican food (I think the best of which was at La Super-Rica in Santa Barbara, which I'll be fantasizing about for some time to come), went to Amoeba Records a couple of times. Didn't really know about the L.A. Film Festival until it was too late, unfortunately.

Glade you had fun, sorry you missed the Castle and the Getty. So did you guys enjoy the drive up the 1?

The best 'Mexican' food I ever remember eating was from a catering truck out in the fields of Santa Maria. Although there is this cart on the side of the road in Rosarito Beach in Mexico, that make the best tacos, just fried beef, onions, cilantro, and guacamole( this is what really make it), make my mouth water just typing it.

Yeah, quite a bit. I can see why it's not for everyone, though, having a little low-level vertigo, myself. I'm glad we had a stop in Big Sur, though, since I couldn't take my eyes off the road and appreciate the view all that much while I was driving.

Who's up for either Thirst or Grace in the coming weeks?

Oldboy showed at the Arclight, so there's hope Thirst might get the same treatment.

If you guys are seeing Grace somewhere between Jul 26th-31st, I could be into that one.

I think by the classics she probably meant Philadelphia Story and Adam's Rib. Not that To Live and Die in LA isn't a classic.

Not Quite Hollywood is playing at the Nuart on Friday.

I can do either on a Saturday, but probably can only make Thirst on Friday at 7:00. I'd never make it to Nuart on Friday on time.

How about Saturday for Not Quite Hollywood either 5:00 or 7:30 at Nuart?

I can't swing Saturday due to going to a friend's place for a cookout, but if that works best for y'all, go nuts!

I would love to but I can't guarantee my schedule on that day yet. Pretty sure I have plans for a midnight screening elsewhere, though. You guys do your thing and if I am able to join I will.

Anyone still got the THIRST? Tomorrow at 7 would be perfect, provided that everything works out schedule-wise.

I should be able to make it to a Friday night movie, but I'm going to a micro-brew beer tasting on Saturday and cooking up a shitload of pulled pork for a party on Sunday (jealous?), so the rest of the weekend is shot.

I'm looking forward to seeing Thirst, and seeing it with you all at the same place that we saw Let the Right One In would be pretty sweet.

ETA: Now that I consider my weekend, I'm going to grab 2 tickets for Friday at 7 and hope everyone else can go too.

I have to bail on Friday now, unfortunately. I have a doctor's appt late afternoon in Van Nuys, so I probably won't make it.

However, I'm still definitely on for GRACE when that opens.

I'm there, along with a super secret special guest (Phil).
