LA gathering - Page 2

Oh fuck. I'm cutting. I want that so hard.
I'll be in LA the evening of Friday, June 12th. I have to wake up at 4 in the morning on Saturday, so I can't make it a late night. I'll be staying at the Wilshire Grand, so if anyone's in the neighborhood and wants to grab dinner, let me know.
Shit! I'd love to meet Frank but damn if I have any idea what to do Downtown.

But it is near the Red Line. Perhaps some kind of quick get together in Hollywood?

If you have any dinner ideas and it's near the Red Line, I'm down. Otherwise we could scour the land for a Zankou Chicken.
I might be able to swing something, but I'm waiting to hear the status on a surprise party for a friend that night - provided that nothing comes to fruition (read: if he has to work, which he probably does) with that I'm down for whatever.
I have no plans at the moment (although the following day is my birthday), so I should be able to meet up and perhaps help others with transportation needs.
I can do it if it's an early evening. I can get to downtown in about 15 minutes from work (traffic permitting, of course).
I turn into a pumpkin at 7:30, so early evening is certainly best.
So what were you thinking you'd want to do, assuming we can all get our acts together?

Drinks?
Dinner?
I know Moon opens on the 12th at the Arclight.
It does? No kidding.

Like I said, anything Red Line accessible would be perfect. Maybe a dinner would be enough since Moon would end at the earliest 10-10:30. And we don't want Frank to be fatigued.
Much as I'd love to see "Moon," I really do have a responsibility to get a full night's sleep. So, dinner! Is there anything good nearby?

(That shouldn't stop you from catching "Moon" afterward, however. I'd go if I could.)
There are some pretty good Mexican and Salvadorean joints downtown (Sarita's Pupuseria, holy shit). Tons of other stuff too, but those two are what came to mind right off the bat.
YES. Downtown LA has the best Mexican food.

ETA: There are some great dives near there (El Parian, El Taurino) and King Taco, too.
So we should meet at the hotel then? Anyone here want to hold a sign that reads "FRANK"?
How about 5:30 in the hotel lobby? I'll be the guy who looks like me.

Oh man, El Parian and King Taco.

5:30 is slightly pushing it for me since I'll have to get from near UCLA to downtown, so I might have to catch up at the food place. We'll see what happens.
6:00, then?
That's cutting it close. Because the westside is traffic hell. I probably won't hit the redline until 6:30.
Doh. Yeah, getting downtown is a little tough, and most of us don't get off work until 5p-530p.

Fortunately there aren't any big events downtown on Friday (Dodgers & Lakers on the road, no concerts at Staples), so hopefully eastbound 10 fwy traffic won't be too bad. I need to grab my wife before we head downtown - like Jake we're also starting over by UCLA - and we'll try to get there as close to 6pm as possible, but we may have to rendezvous at the eating establishment if rush hour is lousy.

Frank, did you have a preference on type of food? I don't want you thinking Jake and I are railroading you into Mexican food. There are lots of places to eat downtown, so you name the cuisine and I'm sure we can find somewhere to eat it.
Good question, Tieman. I myself will take the train in. I will not drive into downtown.
I can get to downtown by 6:15 or 6:20 traffic willing.
Ok, let's go with 6:30. I'm easy on food choices, but I prefer mom 'n pop places as opposed to chains.

if my man and I can make it we will try to head that way... somebody text me with which restaurant y'all choose so we can meet you there!
Well, if Frank is OK with Mexican food (which really is the easiest food to find downtown that won't require taking out second mortgage just to pay the bill), then I suggest El Parian since King Taco does qualify as a chain (although it's not like an Olive Garden or other garbage like that). Plus the restaurant is only a mile and a half from the Wilshire Grand.

Now, as far as meeting up with everyone, I suggest that one of us with a car should pick up Frank and everyone else rendezvous at the restaurant. Parking in downtown LA sucks mightily and is likely to cost more than the food, so it doesn't make sense for everyone to stop at a hotel, pay for parking, and only stay for a short while before moving on.

Thoughts? Alternatives? Death threats?
Sounds good. As for me, I was planning on taking the Red Line in town. Menaing if you pick Frank up, I could be picked up and then booted out at the Red Line station.

Unless I go in Ratty's car and that means we'll just go home the same way.

I can definitely take you home to SO, Hock, but I'll be coming from Paramount which is on the east side of Melrose.

I love it when a plan comes together.

Only now did I realize that my car would be sitting at the Universal City station. What I meant to say was that drop me off at that station and I can drive back.

That'll work just as well.
Yup, and now to hope traffic doesn't fuck itself tomorrow...oh who am I kidding?

Fortunately, the playoffs don't return to the Staples until Sunday.

Coolio! We will try to make it to El Parian, pending no major traffic disasters.
If I show up with the girlfriend and still sound kinda nasal...don't worry, it's not contagious.
I should have no problems picking up Mr. Cobretti from the hotel in the Tieman-mobile.

Frank, unless you object we can exchange cell numbers via PM and I'll text you on Friday when I get near the hotel.
Wait a minute. Just to make sure, I thought we were meeting at the hotel. I was gonna meet Frank at the Hotel and then go from there. Would that mean I would ride with Tieman on the way to the restaurant?
As I mentioned above, parking in a hotel lot in downtown LA is likely to run you somewhere between $20 and $50 (no joke). So I suggested one car pickup Frank and everyone meet at the restaurant.
In that case could I be picked up with Frank? Unless the restaurant is near a Red Line Station. It's easier for me to get out and walk over to the hotel and go from there. Don't want to be screw the pooch here.
No problem. The Tieman-mobile welcomes all!

You say that like it's a bad thing. Small price to pay for the pleasure of his company.

Note: Deliberately used the word small.
What'd I do to deserve this?

You're both on my list.
Aw shit. I didn't know Tieman had an enemies list. And with Frank around, repercussions could follow.
What's the parking situation at the restaurant itself?
Street parking...
You'll have to count me out on this one, folks. I'm not doing any better and you probably don't want to listen to a nasally voice whining about feeling like shit and sniffling every five seconds.
So this kind of sucks. We're going to be in L.A. right after FC leaves. We get into town tomorrow, but are only staying a couple days before heading up the coast, then coming back down next weekend.

Our schedule might be pretty tight the first weekend, but if anyone's interested in meeting up sometime next weekend, we might have some free time.
Sorry you're not feeling well Jake, but that's what happens when you mock me *cackles & rubs hands together*

DaveB, hope we can all work something out for next weekend. These little gatherings have always been fun.

Cobretti & Hocken, see you at the hotel.

Everyone else, I'll see you tonight at
El Parian
1528 W Pico Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90015

Just don't forget to take my voodoo doll out of the dishwasher before you leave. I've been hacking up stuff that would make Ganush cringe. Blech.
I just spoke to Frank. He is a very nice man and must not be messed with.
Thanks to those who came out tonight. I had a great time.

And thanks to Jake for not infecting us with his swine flu.

It was certainly our pleasure to meet you! (And the tacos were good, too)
