So, Alex, can you tell us more about the multiplayer modes now?

There's no wifi multiplayer, and the regular multiplayer requires someone else with a game, so I'm assed out until at least tomorrow. The modes sound like a helluva lot of fun, though. Like "Defend the Base", which is a co-op mode where you try to defend targets in your base against gang attacks.

The other modes are races- either head to head, Dearth Race (which you can win by killing the other guy) or Season Race Mode, which is a tournament. There's also a mode called Stash Dash where you're trying to grab a van that's driving around the city and get it back to your garage before the other guy does. Also, a standard deathmatch mode.

Madly impressive what they've done with this game.

Only downside is driving, which is a little crazy as there's SO MUCH detail...almost too much detail on the roads.

But the mini-games are great, and the PDA interface is one of the best things ever on the DS.

And the music! So fantastic.

One thing you should do immediately when you start the game, I've found, is to change the settings to show the GPS on the top screen. It's impossible to look from the map on the bottom to where you're going on the top screen without crashing- some of those cars drive too damn fast. So much easier to follow the arrows on the street.
Yeah, that's essential. Especially if you want to actually go anywhere on a bike.

Thing that has me happiest so far: RAMPAGES! They're back! (And instantly marked in the PDA for replay once you find each one.)
Only a couple of missions in, but I can't believe how intuitively everything works. It's like all of the usual full 3-D problems just.. go away. The streets seem a bit narrow, perhaps, and the cars are a little fast, but that could all just be a playing style adjustment.

Also the gunshots sound a lot like the sample used in "Paper Planes", which amuses me.

I experimented a bit to see if I liked the steering assistance and it turns out that it's a helluva lot easier to leave it on. I'm getting the hang out of driving although like you said, some of the streets seem smaller.

Absolutely loving this game, though. The "Drug Wars" portions are pretty fun. And I can't believe I spent 15 minutes playing scratch-offs until I won an apartment (in Times Square!)

So, a must buy for someone that hasn't touched their DS in months?
Thread Starter
Absolutely. It's not hyperbole to say it's one of the greatest things on the system. Even the ways it uses the touch screen don't across come as gimmicky.

New trailer today- RAMPAGES

I've been doing ambulance missions just now. Unlike the last games which had them, when you smash into something with the ambulance you won't kill the patient but you can put him into cardiac arrest. You then have to tap on the patient's heart on the lower screen to shock him back to life- which is fun when you're trying to drive back to the hospital as quick as you can. A lot of times you'll pick them up bleeding from car accidents that has an upside-down car on fire and a few dead passengers laying around. There's just so much fucking detail in this game- I can't even believe all the things there are for you to do.
It seems like they must have ironed out the controls and visuals early on and then spent the rest of development cram-a-lamming the game with content.
Has anyone successfully hailed a taxi by whistling into the DS mic? What's the trick? I whistled the entire "Don't Fear the Reaper" guitar solo to a taxi I blocked off in the middle of the road and nothing. It's tough to flag one down even with the X button.

Anyway, great game so far. Exceeded all expectations, met all the lavish praise.
Quick question: Do the main missions include a autosave system and check points like the GTAIV add-on or are we back to the older style save system?
Thread Starter
Autosave, yes, but haven't seen any mid mission checkpoints yet. The missions generally aren't long enough to be irritating if you have to start them over again, and to do that all you have to do is hit the select button after failing it.
Well, Thats nice to know. Good to see Rockstar not regressing on user friendly save options. Debating about whether to play this or not. So many many games that need finishing..
I spent about an hour with it last night, and it's definitely worthy of the hype. The graphics are beautiful, and detailed. The weather effects work great. The attention to detail, and polish, is amazing. They even put in fence jumping! Such a tiny thing, but it adds so much. My only complaint is holding the DS stylus can be kind of uncomfortable, but there's so much that requires the touch screen you really need to have it in your hand. Great game though.

still awaiting the game from Amazon. Now USPS is saying I might not get my order until Friday?? gah.

I feel your pain. UPS is taking FOREVER to get this bitch to my front door.

EDIT: It has finally arrived! Sorry, neaux, can't feel your pain much longer.

This game just gets more and more fun! I had a ball filling molotovs. Anyway to see what drugs dealers are carrying before driving to them?

Amazing game. Just beat it and am doing the Social Club missions now. If you haven't signed up there, you should. Found the two lions and looks like I'm only the 84th person to do so... https://socialclub.rockstargames.com...dianlions.html

The cab's gotta have its light on the roof turned on.
just now getting into this game and loving every second of it. This is brilliance on the nintendo DS.
You don't even have to whistle into the mic; just blowing quickly at it will do.

I found what looks like a vortex of swirling white lines in Middle Park, but when I walk through it, nothing happens. Anybody know what this is?

That's one of the places that a Golden Lion might randomly appear after you beat the game. There's like a dozen of them... and there's a map where they are on that Rockstar Social Club site.
This, among other things is why I wished I owned a DS.

It looks impossibly good.
I am continually amused by how cool Huang looks when he bails out of a vehicle. You can do some fun looking moves, even in this lo-fi environment.

I really need to do more missions. I just spend most of my playtime this weekend stackin' cheese in the drug trade.
I just got rich offloading some acid. It just lined up perfectly where I had a dealer looking to offload it at a cheap price and another dealer looking to pay top-dollar for it.

I'm digging this game more than I thought I would. I'm really impressed with how far they've pushed the platform but on a gameplay level, I simply dig the variety. It's not like GTA IV where every mission is either a shootout or a car chase (and thank God because the vehicle controls are pretty weak although nowhere near as bad as GTA IV's physics-based driving). And yeah, you can really lose yourself in the drug trade. This game was definitely the savior over my long car trip this weekend.
The drug trade is the most addictive part of this game for me. I really hope that in future editions they beef that area up. More stuff to buy with the profit. Maybe random instances where the dealer tries to burn you.

"San Andreas" is the only GTA I haven't played. Did that main character deal drugs like Huang?

Oh, I finally won a house off a scratch.

*cocks an eyebrow, brushes knuckles on coat collar*
post #84 of 142
Yeah, scratch offs are surprisingly profitable. I spent about 15-20 minutes on it last night, starting with $8000, and ending up with $10k and a house.

San Andreas was actually pretty anti-drug. And you need to rectify that, and play it immediately. It's by far my favorite GTA.

This Comet I'm driving appears to have neon undercarriage lights that are visible along the sides at night! Love the details.
Trying to get gold on Noodle Run is driving me fucking insane.
Ugh, motherfuck this "Cash-and-Burn" mission. Just brought the game to a screeching halt for me.

Success!

Really? Do you have the driving assist on? That shit works perfectly with the small screen and d-pad controls. I feel like fucking McQueen driving around the city, something I'm not used to feeling in a GTA game.

Aside from rereleases like Chrono Trigger, this is probably the best game for the DS. And why is Overlord so concerned with the graphical prowess in a fucking DS game? Just enjoy it, man.

Why am I getting dragged into this thread? The gameplay vids look very good. Leave me be!
Because you're a bump-mapping fancypants.
Overlord was commenting on early screenshots. It did look like shit. Previous Nintendo history with the property has yielded some unfortunate results.

He was soon converted to our way of thinking (in fact, only a handful of posts afterward)
I found a Rampage today that gave me the RPG, my first experience with this glorious weapon-- SWEET, SWEET SATISFACTION. Gold Medal for blowing away cars and villains, you are mine.
I fucking hate that you can only use Nintendo Wi-Fi through WEP. No extra missions for me.
Can't you find an alternative wireless access point to download the content through? Or just disable your router's security temporarily?

I'm gonna try the first thing but I already tried the second thing I and it didn't work.
Just finished it with ~73%. Whoop! I have plenty more cameras and jumps to find, though.

Do the wifi-unlockable missions count toward getting 100%?
Thread Starter
They might, but I'm not sure. You really going for 100%? That's hardcore.

They just released this multiplayer montage that makes me wish I had a friend with the game- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cK-heAIZty8
post #100 of 142
Well, I figure I'm doing pretty good already-- I have about 77%, having beaten the game, bought all the properties, and found the two lion statues. About 44 cameras down, and maybe half the unique jumps found.

Did everyone else finish up with ridiculous amounts of unnecessary cash? I've got over $600K in the bank. I, uh, really took to the drug dealing game.

Still haven't gotten a chance to connect to the Social Club or try any multiplayer.
