Rejoice! McFarlane is back!

You're welcome.

And apparently he wants us all to remember that he used to draw Spider-Man. It really is the 90's all over again.
Haunt? I only hope that that's ectoplasm swirling out of him.
You know it's a McFarlane when that right leg is swinging out in an impossible manner. People in McFarlane world all walk like Steve Martin possessed by Lily Tomlin in ALL OF ME.
Okay, so apparently Robert Kirkman is actually the guy scripting this shit with McFarlane serving as the "idea man", oh, and he won't be doing any of the interiors, just the covers.
"Least amount of work" versus the "most trade on name" - it could only be McFarlane. Clearly, his skills have drastically diminished.
Did he run out of money?
It's Spawn-der-Man.
Back in the day, when Image started up and Spawn premiered, the local comic shop crew had a goofy quiz as to which characters McFarlane boosted Spawns' look from (Spider-Man for the eyes, Ghost Rider for the chains, Punisher for the skull jewelry, etc.). This new character is just too easy to figure out who he cribbed from (salute to Jacknife Johnny for being the first to call it!).

So he looks/moves like Spider-Man, has some Carnage style black splatter on his suit, and shoots ectoplasm or snot out of his fingers (ew! Note where his left hand thumb is positioned, and what's shooting out of it) - anyone have the over/under as to when we can expect a non-posable "action" figure from McFarlane Toys?

This is so very, very awesome. Hats off to you.

This has to be a joke.

Looks like he got attacked by a ghost. A spooky ghost.
Yeah...that was it.
He was gonna call him Jizzlobber until Faith No More threatened to sue.

Honestly thats exactly what I thought. This is so mind-bendingly derivative it's like a parody of a fucking shitty McFarlane cover.

If McFarlanes honestly doing this, well, I didn't think my opinion of the guy could be any more contemptuous, but I guess I was wrong.

I was working in a comic store back during McFarlane and Image's heyday (ahh Pitt the title that never was and The Maxx, the title too good for its publisher, happy memories) and even then I just thought the guy was the most over-rated dickhead in comics. The intervening years have only cemented this opinion with the addition I've come to the conclusion he's a juvenile retard to boot.

This is simply another signpost in a career made making oodles of cash of spastics.

When's the movie coming out?
So apparently when Kirkman said creators should be creating instead of working on established characters and getting paid well for it, he really meant you should just steal these established characters and slightly redesign them to avoid the copyright infringement and then create stories for the company he works for to make him money.

When's the HBO series set to air?

I can't wait. Here's to another two seasons of brooding in an alley and doing nothing.
...ah but whens the ridiculously ornate and overpriced action figure coming out?

I can't stop laughing.
I failed as a young comic book artist because I idolized McFarlane. He's so awful. Why did I like this stuff? Are 13 year olds just automatically drawn to this stuff?
So I guess we can safely eliminate the theory that he spent all of his away time studying the human form and learning to draw properly.
Here's some samples from the guy who'll actually be doing all the work while McFarlane gets all the credit. Not sure why he has stubble....
He has stubble because he's griiiiiiiitty. Get a clue, Dickson.
So all he is doing is the covers? is he evening inking them? let along coloring them? 'cause saying "he's back" while all he does are the covers is lame as shit.

Not just lame; it's positively McFarlanesque.

Okay, so, the concept of this character is that he shoots goo? Seriously? Is this Todd's idea of a cool character? Also, you know, somebody needs to rethink this assumption that everybody who gains superpowers needs to put on a skintight circus outfit. Guys with stubble wearing spandex just don't look right.

Edit:
And while this guy is certainly better than McFarlane, he's still a victim of the McFarlane legacy of too much linework. I'm sick of this approach to comics art. Lighten up on the extraneous linework, guys. It's irritating.
But it's his idea.

I love that it looks like he's holding on to his mask with the power of his underbite.
You do have to wonder how that thing attaches. Is it stapled to the roof of his mouth? That would be badass, right?
C'mon, the guy is covered in jizz. You don't have to wonder how that mask stays stuck to his face.
This is really too funny. That drawing is such an over the top McFarland parody its crazy. He has to go straight to ink right ? There is no way he penciled that 'leg' and thought it looked cool. It must have been one of those 'whoops' and he just kept rolling with it. Though I guess if I could make money drawing the silliest stuff I could, I would do it.

Good point. Not one I want to think too much about, though.
And it's Mcfarlane, so that isn't a costume. It's necro-flesh. But since he's already used that term in Spawn, it'll probably be called something clever like necro-dermis. Or if he's really on his game and feeling imaginative...necro-skin.
Every now and again I'm reminded why I've never regretted not reading superhero comics during the 90's.

I grew used to see McFarlane's Cirque du Soleil legs years ago, but I could keep staring at that right arm for hours. It's completely dislocated, but Haunt's about to punch you with it anyway. That's how badass he is.

I like Ryan Ottely... and I can tolerate Kirkman so... I will probably pick up the first trade.

When did noses go out of fashion?
I blame Voldemort.

Here's another thing I love about this image: where is the goo coming from? We see the palm of his left hand, and the back of his right hand, and in both cases, the goo is coming from behind the visible image. So what is it coming out of?

Well, I know what one of the streams is coming out of, but we'll leave that be.

Noses are hard to draw. Luckily, you can just cover them with some rubble.

Is some of the goo coming out of his left forearm? Or his ass?

As regarding McFarlane, I humbly submit Venom. Symbiote/ectoplasm excused him from the nostril game way before Harry Potter.

This is ridiculous.
McFarlane is not drawing interiors on this.

He is drawing interiors on Image United (which is written by Kirkman, and drawn by McFarlane, Portacio, Larsen, Valentino, Liefeld and Silvestri), though. See below.

Wow, so many reasons to ignore one comic.

Had you said radioactive Peter North, that might have been funny.
