After all that hype from Toronto about the Lions Gate bidding war and all that, it turns out that "Cabin Fever" really is an enjoyable horror movie and a pretty excellently made one (it dodges many rookie directorial mistakes, actually).
It's not easy to explain (was probably easier to explain when David Lynch's name was still on as a producer - it's been taken off now, though I'm not sure why - my theory is that he wanted Eli Roth to get all the credit and didn't want the focus being on him - not because he didn't like the film), but it's very "Evil Dead," but in a post-modern/post-"Scream" sort of way.
The entire thing exists pretty much to turn everything on its head and there were times when things got so audacious and so absurd, that you just couldn't help but burst out laughing. There was a lot of laughing and applause throughout the film (the movie, at its core, is an EXTREMELY dark comedy, but it doesn't reveal itself to be that way for awhile) and I had a blast seeing it.
So, I think "Cabin Fever" is a great bit of horror. Yes, as Quint from AICN suggested (he's in town for the AICN "Rules of Attraction" screening tomorrow night at the Egyptian - hopelessly sold out), it definitely could get over-hyped to the point where people will think it's something more than it is and that will suck.
Honestly, I'll bet this thing loses a bunch of minutes before it hits theaters (just to tighten it up, though the stuff they will cut added just more surrealness to the film), but it'll still be hailed as a great new horror pic.
